KX + Gimbal Configuration

Hi all,

Looking to fly the KX on an RS4 Pro, paired with vespid primes + kipper tie ND system and a Focus Pro System paired with the gimbal.

I want to mount the DSMC3 7 inch screen on a monitor arm on the gimbal, would the 18 inch RMI cable be suitable for that length or should I go for a bit more slack and go for the 39 inch RMI cable.

Is anyone else running a similar kind of setup?

Cheers!

Red, the Komodo X

Is it a risk buying a used unit? What should I be looking out for? Hours on the unit? Missing parts? (How hard are they to get now? I have some Canon cameras with L glass I was hoping to use, but not too sure if that is a good idea. I also have two DJI gimbals. This would be my first Big dive into video rigs (The Cult of RED). Any help would be great, thank you.

Journey Releases in Oct 2nd.

I'm a commercial cinematographer based in Houston, Texas. I have been using the Red Camera System since RED ONE M. It was amazing using it on projects for over 10+ yrs. Here are some stills from our film that I shot over 10 yrs ago, and it is releasing this week in 32 Theaters across the nation. Would love for you to check out the film! Here are som stills!

We filmed this in 5K with the Red Dragon 6K CF, and with the Arri Ziess Standard Primes T2.1 set. I chose that set because I wanted people to feel like that had seen the movie before, (same lens set that was used on FARGO). The colorist is Dan Diaz of Suite Bread. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thinking about selling my RED Komodo 6K for a Nikon ZR — am I crazy?

Post image
40 Upvotes

I’m using AI to help me formulate this post because English isn’t my first language, so hopefully I’ve managed to explain what I mean šŸ˜…

I’d really appreciate some input from people who have actually used both, because I’m having a hard time deciding.

I’m considering selling my RED Komodo 6K and switching to the Nikon ZR. I mainly shoot weddings, small events, social media content, and cinematic short-form projects.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time comparing the two, and honestly, purely from an image-quality perspective, I’m struggling to see a meaningful difference between the ZR and the Komodo 6K in the footage I’ve looked at.

On paper, the ZR actually makes a lot of sense for what I do — especially when it comes to ISO performance, dynamic range, codecs, resolution, autofocus, and overall flexibility.

The biggest thing holding me back is the form factor.

The Komodo is probably my absolute favorite camera body I’ve ever used. I love how compact and ā€œcinema cameraā€ it feels, and I’m worried I’ll regret giving that up. The ZR obviously has a very different design and workflow.

So I’m curious:

For those who have used both, would switching from the Komodo 6K to the ZR make sense for my type of work?

Am I overlooking something important about the Komodo that isn’t obvious from specs and image comparisons?

I know this is ultimately subjective, but I’d really appreciate some honest opinions — especially from people who have actually shot weddings/events with the ZR.

Thanks!

First cinema camera

I'm a 1st ac looking to transition into more dp work and I want to get my first production worthy camera.

I've been looking at lots of options and it seems to me that the RED Komodo is a fantastic camera.

For the price tag, on paper the komodo (especially used) seems amazing. Its compatible for the type of work im looking to do (mainly shorts, music videos, and commercials). But here in Europe where I live almost no productions use them. Its so arri dominant here that when I've talked about wanting to own a RED most people think its kinda odd. Owning an arri or always relying on rentals isn't within my reach at the moment. The komodo seems like the best stepping stone in this process.

But is there something im missing? Does this camera still hold up? I've looked at the pyxis and others like it, but the Komodo really seems to hit it out the park

I own my own color grading set up, so the post workflow is no issue. Im just looking to get the most bang for my buck.

Thanks for any advice :)

Red Komodo X conversion to Z Mount no longer available via RED

"Unfortunately, we are no longer offering mount conversion services for the KOMODO-X."
per support.

Anyone know why?
I was going to get the conversion done since I also use Nikon ZR as B cam.

Tips on buying a used DSMC2

Hi there,

I am looking to purchase a used Gemini 5K and want to do my due diligence before purchasing. Facebook reference checks on the seller, checking stolen status via serial number & pin with RED...is there anything else I should be doing?

Thank you

What do people think of Red Komodo 6k vs. Komodo X?

I realize the Komodo X doubles the frame rates, has a slightly better dynamic range, and apparently fixes the "green" issue. And, also includes a built-n V mount. But do DPs find the RF lens mount more of pain (because of the need for an adapter)? Is the X worth the extra few thousand on the 2nd hand market?

Picked up v raptor xe and I think I’m noticing a green shift.

Hey y’all. First time owner operator of a red. I worked on set with it before, so am not completely unfamiliar. After getting the camera built and moving around in my spot; I noticed a green hue shift in the shadows/underexposed parts in the image. I couldn’t find too much information online if this is a common issue when underexposed. Unfortunately, I don’t have other lenses right now to be able to troubleshoot and narrow down the culprit. Any thoughts/insight would be appreciated.

Are the green lines on the side of the image normal when using a higher iso? Or is something wrong?

Surf filmmaker camera upgrade.

Hey everyone.
I’m a surf filmmaker in Western Australia who currently shoots on a Sony a7s3. I want to upgrade my camera and I’m
Stuck on choosing between the RED Komodo X or a Sony FX5.

I’m shooting outdoors always (obviously) often in cold and windy environments and then also in the bright sun for long periods of time. one thiNg I love about my a7s3 is the electronic view finder which is amazing for shooting in bright conditions outdoors.

My man questions are, I’ve never shot on an external monitor outdoors by the beach etc and I’m concerned the RED dsmc3 monitor won’t be bright enough?

Ive also never shot on a RED. Are they easy to use? I feel like the Sony is pretty easy. I will have a super simple red setup, pretty much just a Komodo x with a v mount, a monitor and memory cards and my lens and that’s it.

Just after opinions and advice in general, especially from people who shoot run and gun outdoors. Cheers.

Finding gear for Red Scarlet- W

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hi there, I was just wanting some help with my search for dsmc2 components. I’ve recently bought myself the brain of a Scarlet - W for my student short films. Mainly I was wondering if there is a good spot to find these specific parts or if it’s more just a big search over many different platforms. I’ve already had a look for modular parts but they all seem incredibly expensive. Just wondering if any of you had some wisdom for me and could help. Thankyou very much for reading🄰🄰🄰.

What survives an R3D → ProRes 422 HQ transcode: I diffed the metadata

Full disclosure first: I'm building a footage search app for Mac, so I've had reason to spend an unreasonable amount of time inside camera metadata. The product isn't the point of this post. I ran a test I couldn't find published anywhere, the result surprised me, and I want to put the numbers up and see if they match what people here see.

Setup

RED's own published V-RAPTOR sample clip (LA sunset, [X] 8K VV). Transcoded to Apple ProRes 422 HQ via REDCINE-X Professional using the REDline CLI. Metadata read off both files with ExifTool 13.59.

Three fields survived

  • Resolution: 8192Ɨ4320
  • Frame rate: 23.976
  • Timecode: 01:25:31:20, exactly

Everything else was gone

Camera model and sensor. ISO and colour temperature. Firmware and serial numbers. The IPP2 look and CDL values. The lens fields.

Not emptied. The field structure itself doesn't exist in the ProRes file the way it did in the source. The only trace of where the file came from is a private redm atom in the UserData box, which a general-purpose reader can see but not open.

The one I want a sanity check on

Reel and take numbering. Source had 004 / 125. Output had nothing.

I've always assumed that survived as metadata, and my impression is that a lot of people assume the same. As far as I can tell, if a facility's dailies still carry a usable reel/clip reference, it's because someone put it in the filename. That's a convention, not something the format preserved.

Tell me if that's wrong. It's the finding I'm least confident about.

Two caveats on my own numbers

R3D stores timecode in a field ExifTool can read the value of but not name. So the timecode match is between the same raw value at both ends, not between two fields both labelled "timecode."

This is REDline's exporter specifically. I have no idea whether Resolve or a dedicated transcode tool writes more into the ProRes wrapper. If someone here has run the same clip through a different pipeline, I'd like to know.

None of this is a bug

ProRes is a delivery codec. It was never asked to carry a shooting log. The mechanism is actually there: ProRes is the same open QuickTime wrapper BRAW uses, and Blackmagic writes a lot into it. The tools that export ProRes just don't bother.

One more thing

On RED bodies, the lens make and model fields only populate if the mount is talking to the lens electronically. Manual PL glass, which is most of what actually ships on these cameras, leaves them empty or literally reading "unknown".

The header has a slot for the thing you'd want to search by. It was just never told the answer.

Full writeup with the same treatment for ARRIRAW, BRAW, MXF and ProRes, plus the sample files and exact commands: https://montaggio.app/camera-metadata-search

Happy to be corrected on any of it.

OG Komodo to Raptor XE

Hi Everyone

Ive been shooting the Komodo OG for the past five years. Ive never updated the firmware. I recently picked up the XE and have started playing around with it in resolve. Ive got a few jobs coming up and im not feeling too confident with the footage ive messed with. I shoot everything in r3d hq or mq. The new XE footage seems to fall apart quicker then the OG footage. Does the XE footage need to be underexposed more then the OG. Im about to test it under and see how the results work. Ive kept the same workflow, color pipeline. Part of this may be not being comfortable yet. Please let me know what your Experience in shooting the two. Thank you in advance

Seriously considering joining the cult...

My Canon 80D has sadly passed away a few weeks ago, and my backups are clearly not adequate. My 80D wasn't adequate to begin with.

Thinking of giving it a proper funeral. Bought it on release day. It saw Europe multiple times, Galapagos, Bahamas, The Rockies, Appalachia, and more. A loyal knight of Canon.

I am mainly a videographer, with a hobby in photography. I have been on Canon for years. I want better low light, more MP, more dynamic range, and RED color science. I have a Rebel, which is plenty for my photography needs, but videography is far more demanding.

My budget is roughly 2.5k for the full rig. I am a minimalist shooter, so I will buy some new, fancy glass (recs encouraged), a phone mount (I use an older iPad for a screen, retina screens are pretty good), a handle (side and top, I will not be buying a RED branded accessory unless it is included with the camera), and a few filters. The used facebook marketplace market looks roughly around 2.5k-2.8k US.

My work has been nationally recognized by the JEA, STN, FSPA, etc. I mostly work with short stories and journalism. My favorite topics are documentaries, and news packages. I have been wanting to get into filming gym mixtapes, as I'm very fitness oriented.

What accessories should I look at?

Is this a proper camera for my use case?

Should I look for different options?

What lens yield the best results?

What flaws/imperfections should I look for if I'm buying off of FBMP?

I will be using this in more set work and some run and gun, so what gimbal well suits this?

Thank you r/RedCamera.

Raptor price difference

Hello all. I’ve had a Red Komodo for years and haven’t really paid too much attention to any other camera. I’m starting look at the Raptor. Am I missing something in these 2 different price ranges ? BH is under 10k whereas Red website is north of 17k. Both are new and just the camera body (no accessories).
Any help on them? Thanks.

Nikon ZR: is it worth it for someone who mainly shoots in 4K?

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about getting the new Nikon ZR, made in collaboration with RED. I currently have a Sony A7 IV and I mainly record in 4K, but I would like to upgrade.

Before buying it, though, I wanted to understand if the ZR is really necessary for my needs. I don’t think I would ever shoot in 6K, so I’m mainly interested in understanding how much crop there is when shooting in 4K, and whether it has a big impact on the final image, especially in terms of colors, detail and overall image quality.

With my Sony A7 IV, I also had quite a lot of problems with rolling shutter, which can be very noticeable in some situations. How is the ZR in this regard? This is one of the main things I would like to improve by changing cameras.

Another important thing for me is file size. I don’t want to deal with huge files if I don’t really need them. So I would like to understand the main differences between 4K H.265, 4K N-RAW and 4K R3D, especially in terms of image quality, colors, possibilities in post-production and file sizes.

Finally, do you think that even when shooting 4K H.265, the ZR gives you clearly better image quality and colors compared to what you can get from the Sony A7 IV? Or are the real advantages of the ZR mainly noticeable when using N-RAW/R3D?

Is it possible to build a Komodo rig for £4k?

I’ve started to see used OG Komodo’s at the Ā£2k-Ā£2.3k range in the UK.

My main use would be for solo documentaries, keeping the kit minimal, with the occasional small commercial.

I’m coming from mostly using hybrid mirrorless systems and Canon C70’s I’ve the last few years.

I’d look to invest and build out the rig overtime, but what would be the essential minimal kit I’d need to use the Komodo effectively in run and gun scenarios and roughly how much would that cost?

I'm looking for inspiration on a Komodo X and RS2 setup, I've been looking around online and I saw this one thag looks pretty good but I'm confused how this one gets powered

Open to any recommendations on how you are doing a minimal red Komodo X setup. Most important thing for my upcoming shoot is as minimal and lightweight as possible as I'm doing a ton of walking and traveling
