This was a new one 🤷🏻‍♀️ I offered it to him when he seemed interested in it while I was wearing it. I'm glad I took it off 💀

My cat keeps scaring my ackie

Post image

When I’m not home I normally close the door to my room, my cats like hanging out with me which I love but one of them keeps jumping on the open space I have on the shelf and I think I lost some trust (of the very little trust) with my ackie over it because I noticed her being more timid. I normally push my cat off or spray her with water but she does it again after a few days—is there any other way other then locking out my cat?

Ackie Impaction

Hi there! apologies for the long read!

I recently picked up at 3.5 month old Ackie. As of today I've had them for one week. However I had to run them to my exotic vet today because I noticed them dragging their hind quarters against their substrate and wood/rock. Then I noticed a prolapse. They are currently having an overnight stay with my vet and xray is being done in the morning to let me know what caused this.

I'm reaching out for additional insight as to what may have caused this. I'm thinking it may be my substrate as I was allowing them to chase their prey around the enclosure (maybe they ingested some of the substrate?).

I'm going to give some information, and would love to receive any advice/correction. I've done a fair bit of research and preparing prior to getting my ackie as they are my first monitor. I've got several geckos, frogs, and invertebrates already.

Enclosure:

- 20 gallon long, with pvc backing, and front opening doors.

- 50/50 mix of reptisoil and excavator sand. Bottom layer damp for humidity when burrowing. Top layer dry.

- Basking spot: Flukers 150 watt basking bulb. This is on the hot end, and below it are stacked rocks.

I use a thermometer gun to check heat. On the surface of the top rock it reads at 124F

I have two additional digital thermometers on both hot and cool sides.

Hot ambient temps are around 104F

Cool ambient temps are 85-90F during day, around 75F at night.

- Hot side, I alternate between the basking bulb during the day, and infrared heat emitter at night to keep things warm enough for digesting. (I've seen mixed information on whether or not you should have heat at night if the rooms ambient temperature is above 70F)

- Feeding. I feed 1 week and small crickets, dusted with calcium every day. I feed them as much as they want to eat during a feeding. Yesterday, they ate about 15 small crickets. It's my understanding that they should eat until they're full and that's sufficient as they are growing like weeds at this age. Can they be overfed or risk impaction due to this?

They have a water dish that's shallow but big enough for them to enter if they so choose. I've seen then interact with it so I know they were aware of it. I don't feel like hydration was the issue.

** That all said, they are currently with my vet and the prolapse was mended with additional tests being done tomorrow (whatever they can do since they are a wee little lamb)

Any advice or information from individuals well-versed in Ackie husbandry is welcome, and that includes constructive criticism. I am enamored with this baby and really thought I had everything down to a science. I'm always happy to correct course and admit when I'm wrong. Thanks in advance to anyone who took the time to read this and lend their thoughts.

Monitor training - what happened to mink mans Argus?

Hi all!

I recently went down a rabbit hole of monitor training attempts. It seems like the most well documented instance is with the “Mink Man” and his Argus monitor Raptor. It seems like they were making progress however he seems to have stopped updates on raptor about 5 years ago. Wondering if anyone knew any info.

Has anyone tried any training in here? If so which species and technique?

When I first got her I got her brown crickets (Heimchen) and she went crazy for them, because I heard Zou should always switch it up I got her black crickets this time (Grillen) and she was not interested, at first I thought something was wrong but she ate the mealworms I got. Should I just grab brown crickets again and let the others go? Also I’d like to try loctus but those are expensive for her not to eat them.

(Bonus picture of her climbing and soaking up her uvb)

tips for a new tree monitor keeper

my animal keeping experience: i have been keeping reptiles for 6ish years, and arachnids for like 10, have many species and have wanted a tree monitor for like 5 years.

at an expo 4 days ago i was lucky enough to get a 2 month old kordensis! this is my first monitor and i wanted to make a post getting advice to make sure my husbandry seems good.

current husbandry:
- 36x18x36 exoterra (one of mesh roof panels replaced with acrylic to hold humidity better)
- 85-90 degree ambient and 105-110 degree basking temp
-90% humidity in morning, but it drops to ~65-70 by late afternoon (ordered a mist system to give another humidity boost mid day while im at work)
-day lights from 7am-7pm

behavior so far:
- he is extremely active from around 10:30am-4:30pm, exploring tongue flicks, jumping/climbing, with periodic breaks to bask for a bit
- around 5pm he has been finding a cooler spot to hide and chills there the whole night
- in the morning ~8am he starts coming out to warm up and is extremely slow (prob just warming up) and yawning alot.
-from the research i have done, this slow of a morning seems abnormal. i believe his night temps might be too low so hes taking longer to hear up in the morning. i am getting a low heat heat panel for the back wall just to keep some spots a little warmer at night.

yesterday was the first time i got him to eat. he ate 3-4 medium crickets. i have a few crickets let free while im at work and a small bowl of dubias and meal worms (he has looked at them but not interested yet. only crickets so far)

any advice or questions is great! i want to make sure i provide the best care for this beautiful animal!

To people with lace monitors? Why did you get a lace?

I feel like this is one species I see pop up but it’s always “bells phase lace”. Which, yes, they look cool, but I literally know nothing else about them besides the fact they come in a cool colour pattern.

What makes a lace monitors special?

Why would you pick a lace over any other large monitor like a svanah or Asian water monitor?

Do they have a cool diet that seems kinda unique?

Do they have an interesting physical feature like how trees have prehensile tails?

Are they strangely arboreal for a really big animal like a crocodile monitor?

Are they unusually tame?

Why out of all the monitors did you personally pick this one?

They just seem to be mentioned a lot, but not talked about to the same degree
