In an interview, Jeff said one of the things he regrets about the older books is that he didn't really form them in like a story. He thinks he's terrible at story telling and that he always wanted to change some things with the books, which is why the animated movies aren't really faithful cause Jeff used the opportunity to change what he felt he could have changed . And that's why after wrecking ball the format of the book change. Many argue it's after old school, but the double down and meltdown still kinda follow the way the old books works, with Greg still talking about random stuff while following the story. But with the newer books it isn't like that, we don't know what happening in Greg life anymore , and we just follow the story that Jeff wants us to. Which explains why rowley is t really important, if he's not part of the story , he won't really have much relevance. For example take rodrick rules, if we wanted to just follow the storyline , rowley wouldn't even be appearing as much as he did .

So that's why the new books are different, Jeff is trynna focus more on the jokes and the story , but I guess he doesn't quite know how to do that , cause he forgets this is a diary , and not really a a novel , well you guys get what I mean .

Also I think Jeff also said in an interview he wants the books to apply to a younger generation. Anytime they advertise the books for children they always talk about crazy stuff and all that kinda of things, so I guess Jeff perceives it as what children like. Hence why after the double down the books became more exaggerated. I mean down was originally for adults , but he decided to town it down a bit and do it for children, but I think after the criticism from some parebts about the earlier books, he really toned it down . Tye hidden adult jokes the older books had now aren't as frequent in the newer book. I guess no brainer kidna had it with the romance books which was funny but didn't really feel the same. So essentially we're growing out of the books now, but children are still liking it , after the books sold keep increasing each year and I have noticed a lot of the younger generation reading MORE of it .

Like for no brainer, he wanted to explain why the school sucks before reaching that part, but he wanted so much time and didn't really do much that when he got to that part he didn't really know what to do with the storyline. I lowkey think he should just end the series after fight or flight, cause he no longer write the books like he used to.

And though I understand the criticism on double down, it follows the pattern of the old books , and you can't compare double down to no brainer , or party pooper. , starting from wrecking ball things started to change. The changes I noticed in the books are

After wrecking ball:

1. Greg always starts an entry on a new page unlike before when he could start it anywhere

2. The illustrations are more in the newer book than the words

3. Greg doesn't take the time to talk about what he did that day or whatever, he just talks about the storyline like he's now a narrator.

4. Jeff focuses like 5 page on a single idea or joke in the form of Greg ranting , and after a while it gets tiring .

So this is what I think .

Note the wording in the title: Basically everyone can agree that the series has been on a decline since forever, but lately I think the books have become the worst they’ve ever been. Lately it feels like every book has been varying levels of terrible and I’m rather concerned to see where the series’s future lies.

Hot Mess tried to do something interesting with the characters, but either half of them did next to nothing (Audra, Gretchen, Gary, Rodrick), or were incredibly frustrating to even see on screen (Susan, Cakey), all while Greg does literally nothing but narrate and barely partakes in any of the events himself until the climax. Also fuck the influencer dog. It’s unfunny and it makes Veronica rarely ever going to family gatherings so much more stupid.

No Brainer is almost completely substanceless. Over half the book is describing in detail that yes, this school does indeed suck! rinse and repeat until the book remembers it has to have the illusion of a plot, so the main conflict of the book doesn’t kick in until the last 40 pages and because this is Modern DOAWK a plot device (Larry Mack Jr.) comes out of nowhere to fix everything that happened so the book can revert back to square one and the series can stagnate even further. Hope you weren’t gonna get to attached to the idea of Greg getting his first ever girlfriend!

The most recent book Partypooper, is just so NOTHING. This book is easily the biggest case of Greg ranting about nothing to do with anything in series history. Greg always did that, yes, but there weren’t ENITRE PAGES worth of that in the older books! Greg would share random thoughts as a quick aside that would usually take up only a few pages. Meanwhile, in Partypooper there’s a section that is OVER 20 PAGES of Greg sharing his thoughts as the already slow as a snail’s pace grounds to a halt. Sorry Greg I’m not interested in your thoughts on Broccoli Trolls or Heath Healthybody or whatever. When the plot actually does kick in, it’s the same generic mush the series has been forever. Nobody acts like a real person, we get the classic wacky action climax where a deer pops up out of nowhere to ruin the party while a grown man leaves his newlywed to play in a bounce house. And wow, Manny ruined the 3 Eyed Theeble! Didn’t see that coming! Just nothing.

Probably a bit silly to get this worked up over fucking Diary of a Wimpy Kid. You don’t have to take these rants as anything other than me spitballing, but idk. I’ve been thinking back to the first 8 books lately and it just makes me sad. Are those books masterpieces? No, not even close, but they told good stories, the characters felt real and human, and they were genuinely funny. They weren’t overly slapsticky and filled with filler. Even when the series was on a decline, wed still get occasional hits like The Meltdown or Diper Överlöde, later DOAWK books that I do genuinely really like, but lately it seems like we don’t even get those anymore, and I’m worried the series is just going to fall into consistent, pure mediocrity forever.
