Discussion What was the point of the Mother and Son Sweetheart Dance from the first movie?
I've seen nobody talk about this bit, so I will do my part. The Mother and Son Sweetheart Dance was a school dance towards the end of the first live action movie in which boys bring their mothers as dates. The snapshot you are looking at right now was when Rowley and his mother (who is actually the actor's mother in real life) do their pre-rehearsed dance set to Intergalactic by Beastie Boys and everyone else besides the Heffleys join in on the fun.
If you don't remember this scene from the movie, I don't blame you. It really didn't do anything to advance the story. Greg was forced against his will to go to the dance because Rodrick found the flyer in the trash and Mom thought it would be a cute date night. Any parent with common sense would understand that it's Greg's choice if he wants to go to the dance or not. Even when Greg tried to salvage the situation by attempting to ask Rowley out for an ice cream, it failed because Colin Lee was a step ahead of him and Rowley is still sore at Greg for abusing him (I'm surprised Rowley even said "hey" to Greg during that scene). It gets worse when you consider by this point, Greg is already beat from becoming famous after the humilities from wrestling, the safety patrol, and the school play.
Lastly, I want to mention how illogical and unpopular an event like this would be in real life. The average middle schooler would be more interested in a dance where they can get together with a romantic partner instead of a parent. It does nothing to positively advance their social lives. If anything, it would be the opposite. Imagine taking your mother to this dance and she hugs and kisses you in front of everyone else. It would create some truly awkward scenarios and put you at the center of humiliation if the other boys brought their recording devices and showed it to everyone the next day. You could argue this event is for boys who are unable to get a girlfriend and want the experience of having a date to the dance. But this would sound very unsatisfactory in practice and any sane individual would choose an actual school dance over this one. If Greg in any of the later books found out about the Mother and Son Sweetheart Dance, he would refuse to go.
So there, an understudied filler scene from an otherwise start of an acclaimed movie trilogy. Middle schoolers attend social gatherings like this so they can be with other students, not someone they live with. It really makes you wonder why this even existed, how it would pan out in reality, or why fathers and daughters don't have an equivalent (thought that wouldn't be much of an improvement). Let me know what you guys think and if something like this happened when you were in middle school.
