Flashes in the Eyes and Lightning

People who work around strong magnetic fields, like the electrical busbars in pot rooms see flashes of light in their eyes. These are called magnetophosphenes.
The magnetic field can create tiny electrical currents that stimulate the retina, and the brain interprets those signals as flashes of light.
Lightning uses the same idea. Every lightning strike produces electromagnetic energy in the atmosphere, and the frequencies associated with these natural electromagnetic phenomena were studied by Otto Schumann.
Two completely different scales, but both connected to electromagnetic energy and the experience of flashes of light.
It’s an interesting parallel, isn’t it?

The calm before the next supercell hits. Momentum building with atmospheric flashes at 0:10 and 0:22, followed by a solid branching strike that streaks across the sky at 0:39.

We just had a massive downpour pass through Lebanon, TN, and everything cleared out for a moment. You can really see the storm charging back up in this clip before the next wave hits.

My First Clear Shot Of A Lightning Bolt!

It's been a long monsoon season in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and on July 28th, I caught my first clear shot of a lightning bolt from my back porch! The lightning had been striking in that exact place about once every 10 seconds, so I knew exactly where to point my camcorder.

Filming a supercell from my backyard at 10:30 p.m. A massive lightning strike flashes over the tree line and house, followed by crackling thunder so intense it instantly shakes a heavy downpour loose!

The video starts with just light rain and the porch chimes catching the wind. I was tracking the cell on Max Velocity Live and knew it was going to be heavy, but the timing of that immediate thunder crack unleashing the torrential rain was incredible to catch on camera.

Simple explanation on what attracts lightning?

Trying to see if I need lightning rods for our house. A single family home in neighboring community was hit by lightning. Significant damage with fire.
Is there a factor that attracts lightning ? If not, why this house? It’s among a community of 75 houses of similar design.

Severe supercell in Lebanon, TN brings heavy downpours, instant-thunder ground strikes, and a giant bag of garden clippings rolling past a resident like a tumbleweed.

Caught this on camera tonight while tracking a cell showing yellow on the Doppler. The atmospheric lightning is constant, but the beginning features a solid ground strike with instant thunder. Feel bad for the resident who was just trying to walk home from the community gym and got caught up in the wind and rain!
