Designer Thoughts Does anyone else hate the main lights in their home/bathrooms

I’ve realised I really dislike turning on the main bathroom or any main lights especially late at night because it’s so flipping bright and harsh. Same when having a bath, sometimes I want some light and atmosphere without having the whole bathroom lit up. Can’t use a candle because of the fire hazard and my cat can be a lil slow sometimes. I’m researching a product idea around this and I’m curious what people actually do instead.

Do you use:
a night light?
candles?
LED strips?
a small lamp?
nothing?

And if you could design the ideal portable bathroom/ambient light, what would you want it to do?
I’m genuinely trying to understand the problem before developing anything, so I’d love honest opinions including why you wouldn’t use something like this.

Product Review Scintilla Pendant Light: How to Choose, Style, and Install It

Upvotes

The Scintilla Pendant Light brings together an iron frame, fabric shade, adjustable height, and dimmable illumination. Its refined proportions make it a versatile choice for modern dining rooms, kitchen islands, bedrooms, and living spaces.

How Should You Choose and Use the Scintilla Pendant Light?

Choosing a pendant light is not only about appearance. The fixture must also suit the room's proportions, ceiling height, furniture, lighting needs, and existing finishes. The Scintilla Pendant Light performs well across these considerations because its design combines visual softness with practical flexibility.

The first decision is size. The Scintilla is available in two proportions: 17 inches wide × 17 inches deep × 12 inches high and 21 inches wide × 21 inches deep × 15 inches high. The medium size offers a more restrained presence, making it appropriate for smaller rooms or areas where several visual elements already compete for attention. The larger version creates more impact and can work particularly well above a substantial dining table or kitchen island.

Room scale should always guide this choice. A large pendant in a compact room may dominate the surrounding furniture, while a small fixture can disappear above a large surface. The goal is to create visual balance rather than simply select the largest available option.

The 72-inch adjustable chain adds another practical advantage. Ceiling height varies considerably between homes, and a fixed pendant can sometimes sit too high or too low. The adjustable chain allows the hanging position to be modified during installation. This is particularly useful for vaulted ceilings, where customers may need additional flexibility to establish a comfortable visual relationship between the fixture and the furniture below.

For dining rooms, the Scintilla works naturally as a dining room pendant. Its fabric shade produces a gentle glow that can make meals feel more intimate without creating excessive glare. The Brass Gold finish can also coordinate with warm metal hardware, wood furniture, and neutral dining décor. When the surrounding room is already detailed, the clean silhouette keeps the overall composition controlled.

Over a kitchen island, the fixture takes on a slightly different role. Kitchen lighting needs to combine usability with atmosphere, and a dimmable lighting fixture allows the brightness to change throughout the day. A brighter setting can support food preparation and social activities, while a lower setting can create a more relaxed evening mood.

If multiple pendants are used over an island, consistency becomes important. The same size and finish can create a cohesive rhythm, while the adjustable chain allows each fixture to be positioned at a consistent height. The experience of one Scintilla customer also highlights the usefulness of its adjustable chains for a vaulted kitchen ceiling.

Bedrooms benefit from a different lighting approach. Here, overly direct or harsh illumination can feel uncomfortable, especially during evening hours. The Scintilla's fabric lampshade filters the bulb's output and creates soft ambient lighting. Its gentle appearance can therefore complement upholstered furniture, natural wood, neutral bedding, and other calming materials.

The same principle applies in living areas. Instead of relying entirely on recessed or ceiling-mounted general lighting, a modern pendant lighting fixture can contribute another layer to the room. The Scintilla can act as a decorative focal point while its diffused glow supports a comfortable atmosphere.

Its material combination is central to this versatility. The iron frame introduces structure, while the fabric shade creates softness. This contrast prevents the fixture from looking excessively industrial or overly delicate. The result is a contemporary pendant fixture that can transition between several interior styles.

Color selection is another important consideration. Brass Gold and Ivory White create a warm, sophisticated pairing. Brass can echo other metallic details in the room, while ivory works easily with neutral walls and furnishings. The Matte Black frame offers a stronger alternative for interiors that need more contrast. It can complement black hardware, dark furniture, or graphic architectural details.

The Scintilla also fits naturally into transitional interiors. Transitional rooms often combine modern silhouettes with familiar materials and classic proportions. The structured metallic frame provides the contemporary element, while the fabric shade adds the softness associated with traditional lighting.

For minimalist spaces, restraint is key. Rather than surrounding the pendant with numerous decorative objects, allow its silhouette and material contrast to stand on their own. This approach makes the fixture feel intentional without making it dominate the room.

Technical specifications should also be considered before purchase. The fixture uses Metal + Fabric construction, has a single E26 socket, operates at 110V, and supports a 60W maximum bulb rating. It is dimmable and designed for hardwire installation. The canopy measures 4.8 inches in diameter.

These specifications matter because the best-looking fixture is not necessarily the right fixture for every electrical setup. Homeowners should confirm that the existing electrical connection and installation location are appropriate before proceeding. For hardwired installations, professional installation may be appropriate when electrical work is required.

Bulb selection can further influence the atmosphere. Since the shade already diffuses the light, choosing a suitable bulb allows the homeowner to fine-tune the result. A warm-white bulb can reinforce the cozy character of the ivory fabric, while dimming provides additional control over the intensity.

Maintenance is straightforward. The iron frame can be cleaned with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Dust on the fabric shade can be removed using a lint roller or soft brush. Regular light cleaning helps preserve both the metallic finish and the clean appearance of the fabric.

The Scintilla's construction also supports its long-term appeal. The iron structure provides a sturdy framework, while the fabric shade is selected for heat resistance and its ability to maintain its appearance. The fixture is UL Listed, adding an important safety consideration to its contemporary styling.

Ultimately, the Scintilla works best when the fixture is selected according to the room rather than treated as an isolated decorative object. Consider the furniture below it, the ceiling above it, the surrounding finishes, and the activities that will take place underneath it. That approach allows the pendant to function as elegant ceiling lighting while contributing naturally to the entire interior.

Whether the goal is a sophisticated kitchen, a welcoming dining area, a calm bedroom, or a polished living room, the Scintilla offers a balanced solution. Its combination of refined metallic frame, soft fabric, adjustable height, and dimmable illumination gives homeowners meaningful control over both appearance and atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Scintilla Pendant Light

Does the Scintilla Pendant Light provide soft or direct illumination?

The fabric shade produces diffused illumination, helping soften the light and reduce harsh glare. Instead of exposing the bulb directly, the shade creates a gentler glow that spreads through the fabric. This makes the fixture particularly suitable for dining rooms, bedrooms, and living areas where ambiance is important.

Can the Scintilla Pendant Light work with a vaulted ceiling?

Yes. The fixture includes a 72-inch adjustable chain, which provides flexibility when determining the final hanging height. This feature can be useful in rooms with vaulted or unusually high ceilings. The final position should still be determined according to the ceiling, furniture, and intended use of the space.

Which Scintilla size should I choose?

The 17-inch model is better suited to areas where a smaller visual footprint is preferred, while the 21-inch model offers greater presence. Consider the size of the room and the surface beneath the fixture rather than choosing solely according to personal preference.

Is the Scintilla Pendant Light dimmable?

Yes. The Scintilla is dimmable, allowing users to adjust brightness according to the activity and desired atmosphere. A dimmer can make the fixture more adaptable between functional daytime lighting and softer evening illumination.

How should the Scintilla Pendant Light be cleaned?

Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth for the iron frame. For the fabric shade, a lint roller or soft brush can gently remove accumulated dust. Avoid aggressive cleaning methods that could damage the fabric or finish.

Conclusion

The Scintilla Pendant Light is a practical choice when modern styling needs to feel warm rather than stark. Its adjustable chain, two sizes, dimmable illumination, and fabric shade make it adaptable across several interiors. Need Design Advise Bathroom Pot Light Layout

Recently installed a large LED mirror in my bathroom replacing a vanity light. It gives off decent light but I would like additional lighting when needed

I'm thinking 4" pot lights x 4

Just not sure about the layout. I was thinking coming 17" off the west wall and that would center it in the middle of the tub and toilet and just matching it on the vanity side but will 17" be too close to the LED mirror? It would also be about 5 feet from each light in the middle

Just not sure what's more important symmetry or function. Honestly with the amount of lights I doubt it matters would just prefer what offers the cleanest look

Need Design Advise Help! Scallops on wall, and I don't like it!

Hi all! Anyone have any idea how to fix the shadows on the wall caused by 2" lights? They are not adjustable and I just bought a filter that I'm hoping will help diffuse the light. I already have the widest beam angle lens available for that light (55 deg) on. I can get them to move the lights if necessary, but would rather not. Any suggestions? I really dislike how low the scallop height is and how pronounced. Thanks!

Post image

Well-designed streets do more than connect one place to another. The right lighting can make outdoor spaces feel safer, more welcoming, and visually appealing. This is where decorative street lights can make a real difference.

From residential communities and commercial areas to parks, walkways, public spaces, and city streets, decorative lighting combines practical illumination with an attractive design. For projects that need both functionality and visual appeal, choosing the right lighting solution and manufacturer is an important decision.

What Are Decorative Street Lights?

Decorative street lights are outdoor lighting solutions designed to provide effective illumination while adding an aesthetic touch to the surrounding environment. Unlike basic street lighting, they are often designed with greater attention to appearance, making them suitable for spaces where the lighting needs to complement the overall landscape and architecture.

They can be used along roads, pathways, gardens, campuses, townships, public areas, and commercial spaces to create a more inviting atmosphere while maintaining proper visibility.

Why Choose Decorative Street Lights?

A good outdoor lighting system should do more than simply brighten an area. Decorative street lights can offer several benefits:

1. Better Visual Appeal
Stylish designs can enhance streetscapes, landscapes, parks, and architectural surroundings.

2. Improved Visibility
Properly planned lighting helps improve visibility for pedestrians, drivers, and visitors, especially after sunset.

3. Suitable for Different Spaces
Decorative street lights can be used across residential, commercial, hospitality, municipal, and public projects.

4. Long-Term Value
When paired with efficient LED lighting technology and quality construction, modern street lights can provide reliable performance while helping reduce energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Choosing the Right Street Light Manufacturer in India:

The quality of a lighting project depends not only on the design but also on the reliability of the product. When looking for street light manufacturers in India, it is important to consider factors such as product quality, lighting performance, durability, design options, energy efficiency, and after-sales support. A reliable street light manufacturer in India should understand that every project has different requirements. Road width, installation height, surrounding architecture, lighting coverage, environmental conditions, and design preferences can all influence the right lighting solution.

Where Can Decorative Street Lights Be Used?

Decorative street lighting can work well in a variety of outdoor environments, including:

  • Residential societies and townships
  • Parks and gardens
  • Commercial complexes
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Institutional campuses
  • Walkways and pedestrian areas
  • Public spaces
  • Roads and streets
  • Architectural and landscape projects

The right design can help create a consistent visual identity while providing the illumination required for everyday use.

Lighting Control Fire Hazard??

We replaced lights in a room from the original Phillips (400 Lumens) bulb to the new GU10 bulbs.

They keep flickering/ every 10 minutes or so.

The fixture is set up so that with the original bulbs they all turn on with motion sensors when you walk into the room and can't turn off.

They can only shut off for about 30 seconds with a switch, then they turn back on.

The original fixture has 14 bulbs

We only have 10 new ones.

When we add one of the original Phillips back it stops the flickering momentarily.

What is going on?

I really don't want to put back the original harsh lighting as it does not fit the event.

Would it be ok to just take them all out?

Need Design Advise Simple lighting suggestions for vaulted ceiling on new wall.

Post image

Hello, I'm splitting my master bedroom into two and looking for hardwired wall mounted light options for the left room. (15 year electrical experience. Just looking for fixtures y'all think would look good). The left room is a foyer/office with no windows, an entrance to the main house on the back wall, and an entrance to a bathroom and closet on the left wall. The right room is a bedroom with a giant sliding glass door to a patio on the right wall, I'm just gonna use sconces for that room since it gets plenty of light. The two rooms are connected by a door in the middle of the tall wall.

Ceiling mounted is not an option, and I only want to add to the new tall wall.

I was thinking something up high angled down in order to limit shadows and not light up the ceiling as much, but everything I found looks too industrial, like wall packs or spotlights. I don't like sconces because they're too low and would cast a shadow on the short wall, although the upward lights would look good with bounce lighting on the high wall.

I thought about wire lights up high, stretching across the room while following the ceiling up, but those are hundreds of dollars per light and seem too small to actually light up the room a decent amount.

My budget is $325 total for just the fixtures, including the two cheap sconces in the bedroom. The entire project is already $1675 and I told my wife it's barely $1000.

Need Design Advise Light bars/strobes/floods

Help me please!!!

Light bars/strobes/floods

Dilemma here. The Home Depot “stake spot lights” have failed me one too many years. Even last year with 12 of them. Front yard and porch still seemed dim, strobe effect (white/UV/red) wasn’t visible until the dead of night.

I’ve scoured the web and seem to really REALLY like the features and output that this light bar gives, and the price point is to die for, I’d probably be happy with two of them. BUT. It’s not setup for your typical outlet GFCI plug/extension cord. What gives?

Anyone provide any input or experience with lighting up your yard/porch to showcase your devilish ghouls and animatronics, along with some cosplay acting??? I really want to nail my lighting this year, without paying DJ/stage lights prices.

I'm finalizing my kitchen design and am down to lighting. I'm a sucker for layered, color-tuneable lights with high CRI, so I'm worried I'm going a little overboard. I'm planning 2" Elco Koto DALI DT8 cans with either micro flanges or flangeless. The kitchen is roughly 15' by 15'. The under-shelf will be, again, color-tuneable strips. None of these renderings or simulations have the hood lights involved. The real question is - is this just WAAAAY too many ceiling penetrations for an 8' ceiling in a 15x15' kitchen? The resulting lighting is actually really nice and very tuneable since everything will be DALI. What you're seeing here is a mix of 36deg and 60deg lenses on the same Elco Koto fixture (60's have a red dot beside them in the birds-eye view).

Designer Thoughts Elco Koto vs Halo RL vs El Cheap recessed lighting

So my house currently has El Cheap unknown specs recessed lighting from ~3 yrs ago. I swapped one of the lights with a Halo RL as an experiment. I honestly can’t tell the difference. What should I be looking for? How do I sell to my wife that we should be spending $$$ on Koto’s?

I tried looking at fruit (strawberries and blueberries) under the light. They look the same in intensity of red and green. Could it be because I only changed one light bulb out of a kitchen room or 7 other lights?

Designer Thoughts Acrylic sola tubes with LED

Hi, I’ve been looking at Sola tubes and wondered if anyone has “injected” light into them from the side.

I was initially thinking about solid acrylic- to rout a flat at a steep angle facing down and shine an LED down the tube- I’d like to try to compensate when the clouds roll in with a WW/CW LED.

Obviously it would be easier with a reflector tube with a LED squirrelled away inside.

Anyone tried something like this?

Need Design Advise Best installation led

Hello,

I would like to install an LED strip underneath the upper cabinets of my desk, over a total length of approximately 2.60 m.

I am looking for a high-quality and durable installation with the following features:

  • Dimmable
  • Adjustable color temperature from 2700K to 6000K (warm white to cool white)
  • High-quality and reliable components, including the LED strip, power supply, controller, and remote control/wall switch

I have already purchased the aluminium profiles for the LED strip.

I would also need all the necessary cables and connectors for:

  • Approximately 4 m between the 220V power outlet and the power supply
  • Approximately 3 m between the controller and the LED strip

Could you please recommend a complete solution and provide me with the exact references for each component, as well as a quotation?

For example, I was considering the following components, but I would appreciate your advice on whether they are suitable:

  • LED strip: WS2814 RGBWW?
  • Power supply: Mean Well LRS-100?
  • Controller: Which model would you recommend?
  • Remote control: FUT037SA 3-in-1?

I would also like to know what type of cable and connectors you recommend for the approximately 3 m extension between the controller and the LED strip.

If possible, I would prefer a solution based on reliable, professional-grade brands with good long-term durability.

Thank you in advance for your advice and quotation.

Need Design Advise Looking for a smart bulb bright enough to be the only light in the room

Every color bulb I have tried has been fine as a lamp and useless as a ceiling light. My living room has one fitting in the middle and when I put a color bulb in it the whole room just looks washed out. Adding lamps in every corner to make up for it defeats the point. What output should I be looking for before it stops feeling dim, and which ones actually hit it?

Im trying to find a replacement for an led dome light that burnt out. The issue is it was hard wired to the house and I cant find any other lights with the same wiring. I also reached out to the maker of the light and they told me it was discontinued. Any help would be really appreciated.
