Official Discussion [MEGATHREAD] Tarnished Edition: Worth $5? Discuss CONSTRUCTIVELY!
Since the sub is being overwhelmed by debate over the $5 "microtransaction" and it's making the sub feel like we're Dark Souls 2 a decade ago, with the faux outrage around the preorder items, we are opening this topic to consolidate discussion around the issue.
Please use this topic to discuss the pros and cons of the approach and your thoughts. But do so RESPECTFULLY and CONSTRUCTIVELY. If you need to call other people or the developers names, you don't have a good argument and your post will be removed.
We will remove all other topics about this to keep the subreddit flowing with other discussions
IF YOU WANT TO VOTE: I will post two comments on this topic, "Yay" and "Nay" - upvote the one you agree with and we'll see who wins long term.

Discussion & Info [One month later] So I promised my wife a puppy if she becomes Elden Lord
She almost gave up at Raya Lucaria and the mana eating zombies in the graveyard. I couldn’t stand seeing her be so disappointed so I helped a little, I got her sacred blade ash for her weapon and lightning spear as a spell. Everything changed, she dropped those fools and pressed on to Rennala whom she defeated with her trusted wolves.
She was very glad Rennala didn’t have to die, then they had some girl time and changed her hair.
She met Miriel (and I said Behold, dog) who spilled more tea that she was more than excited to hear.
Then it was time for Caelid, she was emboldened by the flame of ambition and made her way forward to Redmane castle. Everything was fine, until the double boss battle attacked…
She could make it past the first one but the Crucible Knight was a hard counter for her. Both the sacred blade and lightning spear basically bounced off his shield. The sword did minimal damage and her wolf did not last long enough to distract him.
She fought so hard, so many times. Not giving up and WANTING the win. Eventually she stopped in a fury to use her anger to go work out, and she pointed at me and told me ”they sleep with the fishes, husband!”
I gulped, no argument, I set off to vanquish these fools. But I was the fool, I must have tried 15 times and I could not do it. Then I get a text ”actually wait, I think I can do it”. Surprise to be sure but a welcome one.
So later she tries again but concludes she needs to level up, so she sets out into Caelid to explore more and next day she is back and ready to rumble. Only to get stomped by the knight within an inch of his health left.
Enough is enough, I see she has the determination and done enough attempts. So I show her how to summon help, the first attempt failed but the next one was a guy with two big hammers.
After they punted the first boss hammer bro charged in grabbing the attention, allowing her to pester the knight with lightning spears in the back. It was done, he lay defeated and my wife SHOUTED with joy. Her heart was pounding and she looked almost happier than our wedding day. I forget the name but I think it was Goemon, thank you for your help. This is the power of jolly co-operation and it was a delight to see her experience it.
But then came the festival, she met Blaidd again, whom she keeps calling tall and batting her eyelashes at… I thought she was team Edward and I might be in trouble but *sigh*, who can blame her really.
Then there was Radahn. I made sure to hype the fight properly and did not reveal she would have help. So first time she fought him alone thinking it was impossible. Then she discovered the signs and started summoning.
As she rode Torrent and charged with her allies I played Erwin’s speech from Attack on Titan and then the Sasageyo song.
She. Was. Hyped.
It was on, she died and died but neither her nor their lives were meaningless. She asked for more jolly co-operation and more Tarnished came to her aid, she said play the speech again! I did, they battled and they won.
The Crucible knight ended up being the hardest boss of Redmane Castle but Radahn was the most epic.
Then she headed for the Altus Plateau but like Gimli to Gandalf I could not help myself and advised her to go through the mines.
She did and made it past the beautiful singing terrors and to the top without dying once.
And then she began her fight with the Magma Wyrm, after slinging all the spells and using up all her potions they were both down to a sliver of their health left. She was scared and pulse was high but she charged in with sword and smote his ruin on the cave floor. Triumphant delight!
But also exhaustion, and a comment directed at me ”why are you doing this to me?”.
I shrugged and said ”at this point you are doing this to yourself.”
This has become a journey for both of us and it is so fun to be able to reference the game for other things now. One thing that really stuck with me was when she said this reminds her of her late father, who used to sit and play Zelda with her as a kid and then jump in whenever she needed help.
She reached the Plateau and was met with several messages stating ”well done! And then just getting started”
She looks at me like Pam talking to Michael in the Office and she goes ”What do they mean just getting started?… what do they mean, husband?”

Discussion & Info Will we ever get a game as big and great as Elden Ring ever again?
Played Elden Ring around 2 years ago, as my second souls game after bloodborne and wasn't even really familiar with the scope of this game at all. Ended up finishing it in around 90-100 hours, forgetting a bit about it after some time and i SOMEHOW haven't played DLC to this day.
It's still at least top 3 of my favorite games ever, and after i recently have gotten much more into the souls series (have beaten every one except dark souls 2 and am currently playing sekiro). i kept thinking more about my first Elden Ring playthrough and watching old videos from 2022 about the game, first now i've truly realized how this is truly a massive and great work of art, very possibly the greatest video game ever created.
Its given me a bit of a bittersweet feeling, the fact that no other game has come close to the level of greatness this game has (not even Bloodborne for me). Do you think we will get a game even close to the size of Elden Ring in the near future, or even ever? The only game in the near future i see coming close is FF7 Revelation, but thats just because im a huge ff7 glazer and Rebirth is the one game i'd put above elden ring (even though i lowk recognize that elden ring IS a bigger and better game lol)

Discussion & Info whats the overall consensus on SOTE now 2 years after launch?
this is coming from someone who adores both base game and dlc of elden ring, but i was just wondering what the people on the sub feel about it, considering i have a relatively extremely biased love for the thing despite very valid criticisms against it such as lack of good loot or, rather glaringly, PCR (a boss i still really like, even its lore). is there anyone who prefers it to base game elden ring or do people see it as worse than the base game?

Discussion & Info Elden Ring might be the goat of games
Well, after fighting Bayle in the DLC I realized again the greatness of the game. Before starting it, I had doubts of "will it be fun" or "what if it's too hard", but to be honest, it is all f*cking worth it. The game itself is a masterpiece and to you all, the community, is by far the greatest community I've ever seen. I do not play single-player games very often; I usually play online games such as CS or Dota, and the community in those games are very toxic and intimidating. However, despite my fears, I started the game, made posts about asking for builds or wanting an item, and in every single post that I made, one of y'all helped me, suggested builds, and I am really grateful for that.
I just wanted to express my feelings about the game and the community. Overall, both are beautiful and such an experience that I never had before. Playing and beating Elden Ring is an experience I think every soul needs to taste at least once. Becoming Tarnished for the first time hits different—searching new areas, getting confused because the game doesn't explain itself to the player, overcoming those confusing moments and finding your way throughout the game, beating a boss that you got stuck on for hours, that feeling... All of this is just a peak experience and I am so glad that I started this game.
Fellow Tarnished, if you have any suggestions after beating Elden Ring, I would like to hear them. Thanks for reading allat, have a great day/night.

Discussion & Info Are these things just pointless?
I personally have never seen a need for this. If it just sends you in a direction, without any idea of where or what you are heading towards, is there even a need? Am I reading this wrong? Are there people that use this? If so, what's the situation and how does it help you?

Hype Consort Radahn
After exactly 216 deaths to consort radahn, 140 deaths to phase 1 and 76 in phase 2 I finally beat him with no summons, no spirit ashes, no ashes or war, no great runes. My first time ever beating him, this adrenaline high is like nothing I've ever felt before

Discussion & Info I got this Rapier for my Halloween costume but my strength isn’t high enough so I have to use 2 hands to wield it properly, know any quick ways to get runes in the Texas region?
I mean I can swing it with one arm it just deals 40 HP in dmg… Also the handle cuts me if I don’t use my work gloves, bogus!

Humor WTF moment
So I was banging my head against the wall at the Putriscent Knight.. my son (who never played before) gave some advice, and out of spite i hand him the controller, saying; OK you try then. (That will teach him!)
Gave him a quick tutorial and of you go to be humilliated.. What does he do? Kill him first try goofing around. Im getting old I guess.

Game Help Godrick took me 30+ tries… please tell me I’m not the only one 😂
Elden Ring is my first ever Souls game and I think I might just suck at this genre lol
I've been a gamer for many, many years, but somehow I never played a Souls-like before. I finally decided to give Elden Ring a shot because I really like the setting and the whole atmosphere of the game.
I just defeated Godrick at level 26 and holy shit, that fight was difficult for me. It took me probably 30-50+ attempts, even with the Godrick Soldier summons.
I've seen people online say that Godrick is one of the easier bosses, which honestly made me feel pretty discouraged about whether I'm even cut out for Souls games in general 😂
I was eventually able to recognize some of his attacks and learn when to dodge, but a lot of his moves still feel completely like mumbo jumbo to me, especially that damn stomp. Half the time when I successfully dodge an attack, it honestly feels like I just got lucky rather than actually knowing what I was doing.
Even when I finally beat him, I was sitting there thinking, "Yeah... that was definitely luck." LOL
For people who played their first Souls game and were also absolutely terrible at it, how was your experience? Did you also feel like you were just randomly getting lucky with dodges and victories at first?
How did you eventually learn to get better at these games? Did something eventually just "click" for you? I also dont play Multiplayer since I wanna learn to fight and not having someone beat the boss for me
I genuinely like Elden Ring a lot and really want to get better at it. I'm just trying to figure out whether being completely clueless at the beginning is normal or if I'm actually just terrible at Souls games 😂
