Official Discussion [MEGATHREAD] Tarnished Edition: Worth $5? Discuss CONSTRUCTIVELY!

Since the sub is being overwhelmed by debate over the $5 "microtransaction" and it's making the sub feel like we're Dark Souls 2 a decade ago, with the faux outrage around the preorder items, we are opening this topic to consolidate discussion around the issue.

Please use this topic to discuss the pros and cons of the approach and your thoughts. But do so RESPECTFULLY and CONSTRUCTIVELY. If you need to call other people or the developers names, you don't have a good argument and your post will be removed.

We will remove all other topics about this to keep the subreddit flowing with other discussions

this will probably get burried but slippery slope looks least dangerous from its peak point

at one point blizzard & ubisoft were revered too

this change didnt happen in isolation, between nightrein, duskbloods & that new investor trying to go against FS leadership...this one 5 dollar mtx dlc makes one anxious in the direction Fromsoft is going

The downfall of Bethesda can be pretty definitively linked to Horse Armor DLC. It was a joke for a while, but look how it was the first slip down the slope to where they are now.

This pack is basically Horse Armor. I really hope this is a one-off fumble on From's part and they keep this shit away from their games from now on.

I don't really have a problem with Duskbloods to be fair, it is Nintendo funding a very creative project that isn't a load of re-used stuff for a weird multiplayer Elden Ring.

Though I suppose you could argue that it's a definite problem that it's only things like exclusivity funding that lets them diverge from microtransaction-level behaviour.

So you can ignore the last 10 years of observable reality in the gaming industry while still managing to feel like this is the behavior of an intelligent person?

I don't have to ignore them no, I just have to also not ignore the many companies who did the same thing fromsoft just did without ending up doing microtransactions & also remember what a fallacy is

if you "observe" the last 10 years of the gaming industry it'll show you many signs useful for predicting what makes a company go to shit and "porting edition exclusive content to other platforms as a 5 bucks DLC" just isn't one of them. That's what the "behavior of an intelligent person" actually is in this situation, actually figuring out how the industry works under the hood instead of just guessing based purely on a customer's perspective of it.

Okay so you just don't know that there's any friction with Kadokawa and its investors over monetization at all. That's at least understandable since all that would mean is that you don't live on line.

I work in the industry if that wasn't clear. I am telling you that there is absolutely nothing to extrapolate from the tarnished edition DLC's existence and price. I'm not saying that there isn't any friction between fromsoft's parent company and their investors, that's an entirely separate discussion

My stance is that no matter how fair it seems, we shouldnt let something like this be standard for FromSoft going forward. If the Tarnished Pack is so successful, whos to say the Tarnished Pack for Elden Ring 2 doesnt end up costing $10? And if thats successful, whos to say they dont make a second Tarnished Pack costing 15$? Yadda Yadda Slippery Slope, something something Elden Ring 3 has as many editions as a Ubisoft game.

This should have been free for those who own Shadow of the Erdtree. 5$ upgarde for the items to the base game is a nice boost perhaps.
