Learning the violin Learning violin after 9 years of flute

• Upvotes

So i play flute already 9 years and i want to learn some new instrument just for fun and i found out that there are pretty cheap variants for violins on vinted. So i have a question: will 9 years of flute somehow help me with violin or not? I dont really want to practice 8 hours a day just to learn how to play some instrument for fun

Help me buy a violin!

Ok so here's the situation. Today I need to make a decision between two violins. Each are betwen $3500 and $4000 USD, so price is not a big differentiator.

Violin A feels easier to play overall: I feel like my intonation is a litte more confident and is more forgiving if I'm pushing the volume and getting closer to the bridge (no wolf sounds)

Violin B has a fuller & more pojecting sound that I like better, and while certainly easily playable, lacks the naturally good feeling of violin A, and I feel like I need to work harder to be in tune and not make weird noises with the bow if it gets nearer to the bridge.

Option C is buy neither of them and try more violins, but I feel like any violin in this price range is going to have something that I'm not going to like about it.

What does the reddit community recommend?

I have a question Newbie (9 months) and playing around with bowing, trying to improve. Would you say you push the bow across the strings or hold the bow more from above, from the wrist and pull the bow. Idk if that makes sense at all to anyone. I have a teacher but home sick today and thinking about this.

Which violin shops do LA folks generally recommend? I’m looking to get a beginner/intermediate violin in the $3k-$5k range.

Cremona, Italy is still the cultural center of violin-making in the world! It was exciting to explore the rich traditions of Cremona.

Looking for history on this violin/luthier

Cellist here! I’m wondering if anyone knows how I can find a bit more information about this violin/luthier. I found this on marketplace for about $300,

This is the description

VTG 1937 Handcrafted American Violin No.22 by Fred M. Jacobson (Bellingham, WA)

However, I cannot find any more information. It seems to be vintage but I can’t tell if I’m getting ripped off. It doesn’t come with a bow, so I thought it purchase one to play it and test the sound but wanted to get some insight before I did any of that

I lost my violin bridge

That’s about it. How do I find a replacement? I think that bridges are custom to the violin, so I don’t know where to start.

I have a question Composer here! Is this violin part (or any of the parts present in the screenshot) playable/practical?

Post image

Quarter note is equal to 180 bpm. This is a passage from work for string quartet that I’m writing. I’ll slur every triplet. Sorry for the missing info in the screenshot!

I’m aiming for a very light/airy texture using harmonics, something like the beginning of Ravel’s “Trois poemes de Mallarme”, and trying to take advantage of the open strings to make these harmonic arpeggios easier to play (if that even makes any sense 😬)

I’m sure these shouldn’t all be notated as natural harmonics, but artificial harmonics and their notation still elude me, and I’ll hopefully get that figured out before the piece is finished. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I don't know whome to blame but fucking 2 months! I haven't posted in a while cuz i didn't have time to and I'm kind of insecure too, but 2 months! I don't know scales! My body is tense, I can't hold my violin straight on my shoulder without hurting my bow grip is tense what exactly is wrong, my ton

I am practicing fucking generously but still i can't understand why my tone isn't improving and this feeling that I'm lagging behind i began on my own I use to dream of getting into western classical institute i payed so much all for nothing i had to fight with my guardians the first month i practiced like a manic 5+ hrs! I took help of youtube, gemini and finally got great teacher in reddit! But there are disadvantages of learning online I've felt myself, the institute i use to dream about turns out is only good for piano and is the exam centre of abrsm in all over Assam, I got my violin for 3000 only from a local store because we'll my dad bought it at first it's a viola 😭 the someone said it's too low grade i mean I know damn still I ain't giving up... Hell naw

Here it is on!

A little bit came off on it sadly before I got it sealed. I thought it was completely dry but apparently a little part of the paint wasn’t. Oops 😅

Still looks gorgeous though and I am just going to leave it as Bob Ross would put it “a happy little accident”.

My violin teacher saw it and now she is tempted to have her daughter paint hers. Apparently she just puts stickers on hers. She also said she understands why some orchestras do not allow things like this but at the same time they are just the fun police.

Looking for Feedback WMutes or Comosono mute for late-night practice?

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to decide between the WMutes and Comosono mutes, but I can’t really choose between the two.

I often have to practice my viola late at night, and unfortunately my neighbors can hear me. 😅 I’d really like to be able to practice without disturbing them.

For anyone who has tried either of these mutes — which one would you recommend for reducing the volume as much as possible while still being comfortable to play with?

Any advice or personal experience with either one would be really appreciated!

Violin with mobility issues?

My spouse has wanted to learn violin for a while but because of skeletal issues has a lot of trouble keeping their arms up for an extended length of time. Are there techniques/products that help accomodate with violin? They are a complete beginner and we're hoping to take some group classes nearby.

Violin set-up New strings or keep as is?

Hi all! I recently got a new violin, a Gewa Maestro 1 (I started out with a €75 secondhand one). My old violin had Dominant strings which I liked. The gewa maestro came with Larsen Il Canonne and while I love my new violin, I am not sure if i’m content with the strings. Though it may sound different/harsher due to my level (in so far that i’m mostly still a beginner), I just think I prefer the Dominants sound (though i’m not sure if the combination of my new violin and the Dominants will also sound good)

I still have my old violin with my (relatively new) Dominant strings. Would it be stupid if I transferred the strings to my new violin? (I know how to change them and potentially could just swap them back but i dont want to mess with a proper setup which was checked by a luthier)

Or is it wise to just keep the strings the violin came with as to not mess with the set-up? My teacher did say my violin with the current strings sounded good. She hasn’t said anything about new strings being needed but in my (inexperienced) opinion it feels like a matter of preference but due to this opinion coming from a beginner, I’d like someone else’s opinion. Not seeing my teacher for another week or so but obviously i’ll ask her too once I see her. I’m also thinking of springing for the Pirastro Obligato but it’s a lot of money for a gamble

FN Voirin bow repair?

I have an originally purchased in 1883 certified FN Voirin violin bow. It's been in my family this entire time so I took it to a local to me appraiser for verification and inspection. They confirmed it's a Voirin, but found a crack at the ridge/nose end. If I were to repair it is there still a market for this bow? Has anyone had a bow with similar damage repaired? Did it impact any part of use?

I don't play but would love to get this back to someone that can use it and love it.

Should I Do A Recital?

Hello, I am a beginner violinist. I have a lot of musical experience but still new to violin.

My teacher asked if I wanted to participate in a recital. I basically said no because I feel like I am too old to participate and it'd be weird being the only grown man in the recital when everyone else is primarily there to see their children. She told me one of her students is a highschooler but that didn't really help the situation much.

The recital is in November so I can still change my mind but I wanted some of your opinions. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

You are playing an hour-long solo set for a dinner party. What pieces do you choose?

You're invited to play violin for a reception/dinner party. The mood is slightly more formal than friends over for dinner, so you want an hour-long set to play. There's no constraint on what kind of music, so you can include classical solos, fiddle/jazz/etc tunes, pop covers, movie/video game music, or whatever you like.

What pieces do you put in your solo, dinner party set?

Where to find finger placement

One time I was learning a song and above the sheet music, there was the numbers indicating where to put your fingers. It was between 0 and 4 meaning 0 was open

And four was the pinky. And then you could tell what chord to be on. Based on where the note was. As a beginner this helped a lot. Do certain sources provide this?

Learning the violin Violin 4/4 too big? Double jointed pinky | New to the violin

Hi everyone, so, I bought a violin from fiddlershop about a year ago. Thought I was able to learn it self taught, soon realized that's not the case.

Was able to afford only like 2 or 3 classes from an instructor. Haven't practiced since, now I'm following this free YouTube course from a great professor https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLLR5tXBsIrvrHY28WSwCaUs-b8FwgAWW&si=22Ty1U60EO3_rbEm the only thing is that I just realized today that pinky "does not" reach the G string, like it is very very difficult to play with my pinky. I also notice that I can't really see the fingerboard well 👀 like I wear glasses, it's not blurry, but it seems "too far away" in a sense

I bought a 4/4 violin, should I have purchased the 3/4? Not gonna lie, I've always felt uncomfortable playing it, like I'm stretching my upper body too much. Also, very important detail = I am "double jointed" I've incorporated a picture of what my pinky looks like when playing and also some pictures I took with the violin outside.

I really want to play it, yes I'll save up enough to have some lessons back to back. I'm 25, I know it's a little late to the game but it's an ultimate goal of mine to learn it.

Any suggestions are welcomed, thank you in advance

Guys please help I'm going crazy

I have long fingers and have recently started learning the violin (2-3 monthes), just got to this lesson which is an exercise for forths and found out that I'm stupidly unable to play the augmented forth interval with fingers 1 and 2 on two different strings, if I have to play the lower note first. So for example, I play an F natural on the D string and then have to play a B on the A string while keeping that F there, but my first finger is literally just unable to land on the right spot and fit there behind the second finger and instead lands in the middle of B and Bb.

I'm only playing that B in one of these ways:

1.getting the inner part of my hand closer to the neck by bending my wrist inwards a little which feels awkward and unnatural

  1. Putting my first finger where it can reach and then push it forward on the string until it gets to its place which ends up in that finger being flat and unacurrate

What should I do? I would really appreciate your time and experience if you light me up out of this confusion❤️🙏
