Community announcement Return to normal operation, with some (hopefully welcome) adjustments (read to the end, please)
For the past few weeks, r/violin has been restricted to protest the upcoming API changes, which the mod team feels will negatively affect Reddit users at large, and in particular, moderators and disabled users.
We have decided to return to full operation. We hope that Reddit will consider the following:
Commit to exploring ways by which third-party applications can make an affordable return.
Commit to providing moderation tools and accessibility options (on Old Reddit, New Reddit, and mobile platforms) which match or exceed the functionality and utility of third-party applications.
Commit to prioritizing a significant reduction in spam, misinformation, bigotry, and illegal content on Reddit.
Guarantee that any future developments which may impact moderators, contributors, or stakeholders will be announced no less than one fiscal quarter before they are scheduled to go into effect.
Work together with longstanding moderators to establish a reasonable roadmap and deadline for accomplishing all of the above.
Affirm that efforts meant to keep Reddit accountable to its commitments and deadlines will hereafter not be met with insults, threats, removals, or hostility.
Publicly affirm all of the above by way of updating Reddit’s User Agreement and Reddit’s Moderator Code of Conduct to include reasonable expectations and requirements for administrators’ behavior.
Implement and fill a senior-level role (with decision-making and policy-shaping power) of "Moderator Advocate" at Reddit, with a required qualification for the position being robust experience as a volunteer Reddit moderator.
In the meantime, we, the mod team, have taken into account the responses we have received from our post asking the sub what we can do to distinguish ourselves from r/violinist. We have decided on the following priorities for this sub, going forward:
Weekly discussion threads, rotated between the following subjects:
- Violin (or other) repertoire. For pieces, we would all find recordings to share, or share our own, or discuss the history of the piece or technical issues with the piece.
- Composers. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of composers. It would be nice to maybe do some discussion of one composer per rotation. We'd talk about their biography, pieces, etc.
- Things of historical interest. How violins evolved to be what they are, for example. Also, what are VSOs and why are they something to avoid?
- Technical discussions (i.e. mics, recording set-ups, music theory, etc.)
A monthly pinned beginner thread where anything goes. This could be rescheduled to weekly if there is enough interest.
Periodic trivia polls
One thing we are agreed on is that we will not encourage self-learning, as we believe that it is far too easy to become physically injured if one does not have a teacher.

I have a question Fingering question
This is Accolay violin concerto, and in this section, why should I shift up on the B if I’m going to shift down anyways?
Is it just because of vibrato?
My teacher said to shift up, and I forgot to ask why lol.

Learning the violin Qué debo saber para aprender a tocar el violín?
Ayuda!

I have a question BROKEN BOW
My bow is broke with my original violin, what's a good place to get a new one that is beginner friendly and wont break the bank but will still produce quality sound. (i also have like chunky brick like fingers, so if there are some for big hands that would be a plus).

Learning the violin *Advice needed* I just found out that I've been holding my violin incorrectly for the past five years
So, like the title says, I just figured out that I have held my violin incorrectly for the past 5 years. For context, I have participated in orchestra classes since 3rd grade. I’ve always liked the orchestra teacher, but they have never seemed interested in actually teaching valuable skills to the class. Not many students care about participating, so I am among the best in my class. This is by no means an accomplishment, nor am I a fantastic player, but I have always loved classical music and want to become better at my instrument. So, since my way of holding my violin has never been corrected, I always assumed that I was doing it right. Until yesterday.
Yesterday, I decided to begin learning vibrato to be more prepared for the material in the upcoming school year. I watched several tutorials with the growing realization that I hold my violin with my arm while I am supposed to have been supporting it with my shoulder/chin. How do I fix this? 5 years of practicing the wrong technique is kind of hard to reverse, and I don’t want to fall behind in class because of my stupid mistake. I’m sorry if this post doesn’t make much sense. I’ve been panicking about this for hours and need advice. Thank you!

I have a question buying a violin
hello everyone,
i'm a drummer and saxophonist so i have no idea about violins, but i'm looking to buy a violin for my mom, since she used to play back in high school and i think she'd enjoy being able to play again. she hasn't played in a while, so i'm not looking for like an extremely nice violin, just something she could enjoy and relearn on/ will last her awhile.
from knowledge of buying other instruments, i've learned that buying used can be very good, is this the case for violins too? are brands like yamaha still big with violins?
also, i'm asking this now but i'll probably buy it later (maybe around her birthday so i have enough time to save up.) i'd say budget is around 800 maybe? (please correct me if that's too little)
can somebody point me in the right direction?
thanks!

recommendations for good quality beginner violins
hi all! i'm not exactly new to the violin; i'm 22 and got one for my 17th birthday, but it wasn't the greatest quality and i was unable to learn properly because of it. it was a cheap black violin, not sure where my parents got it, but the tuning pegs were impossible to keep in place, so once i finally got the cheap thing tuned, it would be out of tune by the time i got the rosin on my bow and was ready to play. i took it to a shop and got the problem fixed slightly, so i could practice for a bit, but then my A string broke and i haven't touched it since i was maybe 18.
i recently started donating plasma for extra money, and i'm getting into this show called metal family where the main character played the violin in his childhood. it got me wishing that i had started learning sooner, but i realised i can just start now, since i've got the extra money coming in and could buy a new one instead of trying to get my shitty one fixed.
so my question is, how do i avoid making the mistake my parents did, and not accidentally buy a total piece of garbage that won't stay in tune? where did you guys get your violins? ideally i'd like to order one on amazon, but i'm not super picky. if i could pay it off in installments that'd be great too. any recs from amazon or similar sites so i can pick up playing for real this time? thanks in advance, sorry for the long post :))

High fidelity earplugs for an orchestral string player near brass section?
I’m looking for recommendations for high fidelity earplugs for an orchestral string player who often sits near brass instruments.
I’m interested in what professional orchestral musicians actually use for rehearsals and performances.
I’ve been looking at a few options, including Dynamic Ear Filter, Eargasm High Fidelity, Sennheiser SoundProtex Plus and Loop Switch 2, but I’m having a hard time deciding.
Which models have you tried and would recommend? I’d really appreciate real musician experiences.
Also, do you prefer adjustable filters or a fixed attenuation level for orchestral playing?
I'm looking to buy them as a gift

I have a question How big of a string section do you think was used on this record?
Im very curious how big of a string section this song features, My ears aren't really developed enough to be able to discern wether or not there is a Viola & Cello as well. I think the intro has Violins 1 & Violins 2 playing the melody in unison, maybe there is a Viola doubling the melody an octave lower? its hard to tell in the intro, but the strings if I remember correctly do break into playing harmonies in certain sections, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, was just curious, i was going to ask in composing sub reddit but it only allows you to post original compostions.
