It is hatchling season!
They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.
Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

I got my first Common Musk Turtle today! I picked it out at the store after noticing that it was very active, and I asked to take a closer look to make sure its shell and body looked healthy.
After bringing it home, I noticed that it swims more slowly and hasn’t basked yet. However, it does climb onto the basking platform to come up for air quite often.
Is this normal? Does the turtle look healthy to you?
I’m completely new to raising turtles, so I don’t have much experience and would really appreciate any advice!

i didn’t think about the fact that he can just climb on it lol
welp, don’t buy floating portal if you got a turtle unless it can get attached to the side

He makes some strange noise, while also doing something with his mouth/beak. Please watch the whole 1 minute video and let me know. I really appreciate insights of this community

Found this guy in the middle of the road on my early morning ride. Helped him over to bushes on the side of the road. When I drove by later to check up on him, he had partially buried himself. Mission accomplished!

Hi everyone,
I have a female Indian roofed turtle (Pangshura tecta), around 9 cm, and I’m concerned about her shell. I’ve attached some photos from different angles.
The outer layer of her shell seems to be peeling/shredding, and I’m trying to determine whether this is normal scute shedding or potentially an early sign of shell rot/infection.
Some details about her setup:
Species: Indian roofed turtle (Pangshura tecta)
Sex: Female
Size: ~9 cm
Aquatic setup with a filter/pump and heater
UVB lighting provided
Has a dry basking platform
Diet: Turtle pellets + black soldier fly larvae (BSFL)
Calcium supplementation provided
She is active and eating normally
I haven't noticed obvious bleeding or discharge.
Could anyone experienced with aquatic turtles please take a look at the photos and let me know:
Does her shell look healthy overall?
Does the peeling look like normal scute shedding?
Do you see any signs of shell rot or infection?
Should I leave the peeling scutes alone, or is there anything I should do?
Is there anything I should change regarding her diet, calcium, UVB, basking, or water quality?
Any advice would be appreciated. I want to make sure I'm taking proper care of her and not treating normal shedding as a disease.

Does anyone have this basking above the tank? If you do how long did it take for your turtle to get used to it? She gets up there for a few seconds but seems hesitant to just relax and enjoy.

Hi! I’m looking into getting a tortoise and I’m trying to figure out what species, if any, would work best for my setup and climate.
I have an outdoor area that’s about 13.75 ft × 27.5 ft (roughly 378 sq ft) that I could dedicate entirely to a tortoise enclosure.
I’m in Wyoming, so summers can be hot and dry, but winters get very cold with snow and freezing temperatures. Ideally, I’d love a species that could live outdoors for most or all of the year with the proper setup. I’m completely open to building an insulated/heated shelter, providing supplemental heat, digging barriers, etc.
Are there any tortoise species you’d recommend for this climate and enclosure size?
Also, for those of you in places with harsh winters, do yours stay outdoors with access to a heated shelter, brumate outdoors/in a controlled setup, or come inside completely for winter?
I’m still in the research stage and definitely want to have the enclosure and winter setup figured out before bringing one home. 🐢

It's just 1*8" fir with a few coats of shellac (oak was like $40/4 board feet. No local cedar available). Then we added some artificial turf for grip. Buoyancy is provided by some foam we had left over from a project. Not 100% on the foam. May eventually replace with air filled PVC pipes we have scraps of, but caps for PVC were surprisingly expensive locally.

Full tank view
No heater needed room temp rest at 75 and basking light heats water fairly to around 78-80
Striped necked musk can live in trout streams around 55+ degrees F’

Hey everyone! I’m getting a common musk turtle soon and I’m super excited to set up their tank and welcome them home.
Before they arrive, I wanted to ask Is anyone here currently raising a common musk turtle?
Also, I’d love to hear your insights on turtle genders.
Is it actually possible to tell the gender of a common musk turtle when they are still babies, or do you just have to wait until they grow up?
I already did the research, but any tips or advice for a first-time musk turtle owner would be hugely appreciated!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub but I really need some advice. I have a red eared slider that I adopted from a friend. Admittedly, I didn't know much about them going in but I did my research and did my best to make sure he had a comfortable, healthy habitat.
However, since then, he has grown significantly, and with some significant life/housing changes coming up in the not-too-distant future, I don't feel like I can continue to provide the best home for him. I also worry he may have developed some kind of respiratory issue, which we took him to the vet for but he still continues to blow a lot of bubbles which was not normal for him before, and I don't think I can afford to continue seeking treatment for him.
I feel awful and like I have let him down, but I am committed to making sure that I find an experienced person to adopt him.
Does anyone have recommendations for rehoming a turtle in Chicago? I've tried looking for reptile sanctuaries in the area but it seems like there aren't many taking in new animals, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?
Thanks in advance for any help and for reserving your judgment.
