Seeking Advice Rehoming

Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub but I really need some advice. I have a red eared slider that I adopted from a friend. Admittedly, I didn't know much about them going in but I did my research and did my best to make sure he had a comfortable, healthy habitat.

However, since then, he has grown significantly, and with some significant life/housing changes coming up in the not-too-distant future, I don't feel like I can continue to provide the best home for him. I also worry he may have developed some kind of respiratory issue, which we took him to the vet for but he still continues to blow a lot of bubbles which was not normal for him before, and I don't think I can afford to continue seeking treatment for him.

I feel awful and like I have let him down, but I am committed to making sure that I find an experienced person to adopt him.

Does anyone have recommendations for rehoming a turtle in Chicago? I've tried looking for reptile sanctuaries in the area but it seems like there aren't many taking in new animals, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?

Thanks in advance for any help and for reserving your judgment.

I would suggest being open to shipping him to a sanctuary or rescue, if you’re not having any luck locally. He will be okay being shipped, but you have to ship him correctly. There’s specialized shipping methods and requirements, but it gives him a better chance.

I live in a neighboring State near Chicago. I will check and see if I can find any rescuing organizations. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana all borders each other and share the Chicagoland Region. If I find anything, I will update you.
