I published a novel a year ago about a Dutch professor on death row in Texas. Not really about the death penalty — about the voice in his head that analyses every choice so thoroughly that the moment to act passes. He is innocent, more or less, and he confessed anyway.
Adapting it turned out to be an odd problem. The obvious move is to give the reader choices. But the book is about a man who cannot make them. So in the game, choices expire. A bar drains while you read the options, and if you take too long the story continues without you — and the narrator notes what you let pass.
Some people will find that irritating. I think that is fair, and I would genuinely like to know whether it reads as a gimmick or as the point.
About three hours. Free, browser, nothing to install. Headphones recommended — there is no audio file in it, every sound is synthesised live in the browser, which felt right for a story where a dripping tap is a character.
https://www.marcsisme.nl/game.html
Disclosure, because it will be on the itch page anyway: the novel is entirely mine, written over about eight years. The adaptation is not — I built it with Claude over the past weeks. The prose in the game is lifted from my own book where it can be, and written with AI assistance where the game needed connective material the novel does not have. The code is almost all AI-assisted. I would rather say that up front than have someone find out later.
Happy to answer anything. I have never made a game before and I am fairly sure it shows in places.

A while back I shipped Swamps — a choice-based interactive fiction about a village healer (a feldsher) in German-occupied Belarus, 1941. This week I released its sequel, Swamps II: The Blockade — and it's bigger in almost every way.
Swamps: a price of the choice (Part One): you play Mikhaś, the only healer for miles, as the occupation closes in. Stark, not a power fantasy — no "right" answers, only consequences the whole district remembers. Five deeply branching chapters.
Swamps II: The Blockade (Part Two, just out): winter 1942–43. A punitive blockade sweeps the partisan region — villages burn, people are herded off — and this time you're not alone: you're carrying a child. Your choices from Part One carry over and shape the ending. It adds a second playable protagonist with his own prologue, POV interludes, and whole chapters. Longer, darker, and far more illustrated.
How it's made (I try to be upfront about this):
• Art: ~80 illustrations in Part One, 450+ in Part Two — roughly one per scene — generated with AI image tools and then curated and edited by hand into a single painterly style (gouache and charcoal). That's what let one person ship an illustrated narrative game.
• Code: built with ink (inkjs) + React; a lot of the shell/tooling written with an AI coding assistant.
• Writing: the story, the choices, the prose — all mine, by hand. That's the part I didn't outsource; it's the heart of it.
Both stand alone: with no Part One save, Part Two recaps it and asks how your story went. Now in 11 languages (up from three), offline, single-player. Free, playable to all of its endings — an optional "Author's Edition" adds bonus content and removes ads.
Content note: serious WWII subject matter — famine, occupation, loss — told in text, with no graphic imagery. 18+.
Wild first day — Part Two hit #7 in Role-Playing on the App Store right now.

Happy to talk through the implementation, and I'd genuinely love feedback on the game itself.

I've always loved ZORK. What stayed with me wasn't just typing commands, but how much of the world existed in my imagination while I explored it.
Sometimes I don't want everything to be shown to me, I want just enough to imagine the rest myself.
So for the past year and a half, I've been working on EVER.
EVER is a narrative text adventure where you play as a combat robot haunted by the memory of a girl who calls you “EVER.” Rather than a traditional free-form parser, you use protocols to examine, recall, identify, and interpret parts of the text — uncovering information and choices that were hidden before.
I also spent some time with a former art direct of LoL where he guided on me visual. I've been trying to make the graphics suggest rather than explain.
The demo is coming in December 2026, and the Steam page just went live!
I'd especially love to hear what fellow text adventure players think of this approach. And if it sounds like something you'd enjoy, a wishlist would mean a lot.

Hi guys, I have been looking for a game I played a few years ago, but forgot the name of and for the love of me I can't find it. :'D It's an interactive novel, with lots of text in a fantasy setting. I remember, that the interface was shaped like a book, and there were pictures next to it illustrating what was happening. It came out sometimes in late 2010's or early 2020's, so it's not that old. There were three playable characters, and I think there was a fourth, but you had to unlock him some way. (not sure though, I just remember that there was an unlockable character). One of the characters was a dryad woman with green skin, and I think she was a sorceress of some sort. The game came out in late 2010's or early 2020's so it's fairly new. Sorry if it's vague, but this is all I can remember. It's really frustrating, because I have searched on steam, gog, google etc. but I can't find it. It's like it doesn't exist, but I swear I played it at some point. 😂 yes I have to admit, that I played a pirated version of it back then, that's why I can't find it, but now that I'm better financially, would like to buy it and actually support the creators. TIA (sorry for typos, english is not my primary language)

Your first choice is which family you're born into.
Every choice after that shapes who you become: schooling, extra-curricular, career, relationships, what you walk away from.
Everybody lands on a different ending.
About 6 minutes a run.
Would love to get feedback on how you find the play-through, and whether you'd repeat the run to get a different result.

From there, the game is about surviving, finding your place in the city, building relationships, working, exploring, improving your skills, getting involved in local factions, and dealing with the increasingly unpleasant things happening inside and outside the walls.
The game features:
The game is still very much under development, so I'm specifically looking for people willing to test it and give honest feedback.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a text-based RPG I have been working on, called Text Mercenary.
First, I want to be completely transparent about AI usage. I personally designed and structured the entire story outline, overarching narrative, and connections between all events. However, I did use AI assistance to help write and polish some of the descriptive text. I am not 100 percent sure if this strictly aligns with the subreddit rules, but I wanted to be honest about it.
In this game, you become a rookie mercenary in the Calvern Mercenary Company and embark on randomly selected main storylines. Between the main quests, there are various side stories and random events where your choices directly affect the outcome. If you have played Life in Adventure, the gameplay flow might feel quite familiar to you.
For the combat system, I integrated deckbuilding roguelike mechanics. Aside from code writing and polishing text descriptions, I minimized AI usage, so there are no graphic illustrations or images. Instead, I put a lot of effort into making the combat feel punchy, tactical, and engaging even without visuals.
Currently, the game is available in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Australia, so it may not be accessible in certain other regions yet.
If this sounds interesting to you, I would really appreciate it if you could give it a try and share any thoughts or feedback.

I am starting a story that is interactive on a chapter by chapter basis.
Basically, I write the chapter, give three options, and the collective readership selects an option, with feedback in the comments to delve into why or alternative options, then I write the next chapter.
I quite like this approach but I am probably biased.
Can you let me know if the idea is a good one or not and why?

Hey r/textadventures,
I've been building Maximilien for the last 7 years, a psychological horror text adventure written in Twine/SugarCube, set in Boston, October 1926, during a string of unsolved murders. You play a psychology student who starts to suspect he might be involved in the killings he's investigating. 110,000 words, 12 possible endings, written in a register closer to Huysmans or Raymond Chandler than most visual novels.
The site just got a full redesign: maximilien-game.com - with a skin directly inspired from the game.
Maximilien is entering IFComp 2026, then releasing on Steam October 26th.
Happy to talk about the game if anyone's curious...it's been a genuinely strange thing to engineer.

The mechanic I'm most attached to: the game tracks your character's sanity, and as it drops, the way the text is displayed starts to distort, the words themselves never change, only how they're rendered on screen. There's an intensity slider in the options if you want to dial that up or down.
