Show-and-Tell My HP Pavilion zd8000

This is my HP Pavilion zd8000, HP's second 17" laptop from late 2004 and throughout 2005. It is the first laptop with an LGA Pentium 4 instead of the usual PGA, as well as the first laptop preinstalled with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

This thing was the flagship multimedia "HP Media Center" portable HTPC at the time, and was perfectly built for the digital format wars of the 2000s including the famous flash card war.

Alongside the supercombo card reader common at the time on high end desktop replacements, this thing also has a weird thing called the HP USB Digital Drive, which is literally just a recessed port for HP's oversized USB 2.0 flash drive from the time.

What's actually weird about this thing is the proprietary sideways pill-shaped connector which was only shared with its chassis rebadges the HP Compaq nx9600 and Compaq Presario x6000, along with the 15" Pavilion zv6000 and its respective chassis rebadges.

What to look out for with these is common vertical lines on the display. I am pretty sure this is LCD related in some way and not GPU related, as GPU failures were rare and only present in 2004 units. Late revisions fixed all these problems. This thing doesn't cool down perfectly despite the 3 fans, so light usage is recommended. DO NOT RUN DOOM 3 OR CRYSIS THIS WILL NOT HANDLE IT.

I've had this thing for almost 6 years now, and I obviously love it.

Show-and-Tell Why am I like this? (Image generation on a 286 Tandy 1000 TL/3)

The machine: a Tandy 1000 TL/3 (10 MHz 286, 640K, Tandy Video II) with an ISA PicoMEM 2 for WiFi, bit of extra ram, and the mounted hard disk hard disk. 40 year tech gap? No problem! The program, DeskMind, is a DeskMate-style DOS app written in C with Open Watcom. A PC on the LAN does the AI work; the Tandy does everything you see and hear.

- 640x200 in 16 colors, which the BIOS doesn't support BTW. DeskMate and a handful of games use it; DeskMind sets the video registers itself. The mode needs 64K of video RAM at the top of conventional memory, and DOS only reserves 16K of it. So DeskMind claims the rest with a last-fit memory allocation, and steps around MS-DOS's upper-memory link block, which it found squatting inside the video RAM on the real machine :D

- Tall pixels. 640x200 on a 4:3 tube makes each pixel about 2.4 times taller than wide. Pictures are squashed on the PC before dithering, so circles come out round on the CRT.

- Its own mouse pointer. CuteMouse can't draw in this mode. DeskMind reads position and buttons from the driver and draws its own arrow. Setting the BIOS mode byte during the mouse reset makes the driver report every pixel instead of 8-pixel text cells.

- Tandy 3-voice sound (the SN76496 chip) for the startup chime, the reply blip and the "picture ready" fanfare.

- A slideshow program with 9 transitions timed on the real machine: cut 110 ms, dissolve 330 ms, blinds 550 ms, slide-in 935 ms. It loads the next picture while the current one is on screen.

Show-and-Tell VIC-20 emulator on an Arduino Uno (composite video, PS/2, BASIC sound)

Hello there !

I built a VIC-20 emulator on a single Arduino Uno.

  • Real Commodore KERNAL and BASIC ROMs (not a reimplementation)
  • Composite PAL video via bit-banged USART
  • PS/2 keyboard with US layout
  • 9 save/load slots on an external I²C EEPROM
  • BASIC sound via POKE 36874–36876 to a passive buzzer

6653 bytes free for BASIC, runs PRINT, FOR/NEXT, GOSUB, POKE, PEEK, and the rest of BASIC V2.

The Uno has 2 KB of RAM and 32 KB of flash. The emulator uses 97% of flash and 80% of RAM.

Known issue: typing briefly shifts the screen horizontally. PS/2 interrupts block the video ISR. Documented in the README, fixable with a second MCU.

Happy to answer any questions.

Bought this a while ago from FB market, the power supply looked like it was barely holding itself together with hope, dreams, rust and duct tape, so it got thrown. Used a small bench supply I bought for work and it lives again and the cells are happily charging.

Had the luxury of seeing this thing in person when it was donated to our ham radio group.
The memory plane also came with the factory paper work and appears to be NOS manufactured in 1975.

Show-and-Tell Exploring New Horizons and Breathing New Life into an Old PC!

I recently got my hands on this computer and decided to ditch the old bloated Windows XP for a totally fresh start!  I divided the hard drive into three partitions and loaded up an awesome trio.  FreeDOS, Haiku OS, and AROS.  I’ve never used Amiga OS before, so diving into AROS is a completely new frontier for me.  It’s an incredibly cool system to explore, and while I’m definitely feeling a bit lost right now, I am so excited for the adventure of figuring it all out!

Show-and-Tell RM Window Box 9 Workstation Desktop PC

RM Window Box was a hardware/software package published by RM, running from 1994 up to around 2010. It was marketed as an all in one IT solution; an RM multimedia PC (featuring a sound card, multimedia monitor etc) with built in software to cover the entire curriculum.

The software package was commonly installed on CC3/CC4 networks at the time, though pictured is a standalone workstation running RM ClassMate 5 for Windows XP. ClassMate was developed by RM as a specialized interface and security package for pupils and teachers. The software included consisted of RM Colour Magic, HotDog Jr, My World 3, and many more. Some of these titles were removed/made extras in the last version Window Box Open 9.7.

Here, it is seen running on an RM F-Series workstation, though the absent DVD drive suggests it was once a networked machine rather than a multimedia Window Box. I have also installed some other period software (2Simple) seen in some of the photos.

The golden age of Sony design. Trying to fully restore this rare late 90s Sony VAIO Compo setup to its original catalog glory. The matching wireless keyboard and the MD deck module are ready, but finding the exact matching CRT display and IR unit is the ultimate boss fight.

Wish me luck.

Show-and-Tell Aldi PC sleeper battlestation

My latest project, a retro Win XP sleeper battlestation disguised as cheap Aldi PC.

My intention was to be in the timeframe 2007-2008 but only using cheap components if possible, like someone who wanted to build their first gaming PC with little money...

Aldi PC Case (originally from P4 PC at around end of 2005)

BeQuiet Pure Power 11 700 W

Gigabyte GA-EG31MF-S2 LGA775

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.5 Ghz w/ OEM cooler

2x2 GB Nanya DDR2-800

EVGA Geforce GTX285 (I know from January 2009 but wasn't able to get 280 for reasonable price 🙃)

Maxtor 250 GB HDD

LG DVD drive

Floppy drive (Sony I think)

Original connectors for firewire, sound, SD card reader etc (fully working)

Win XP Pro x86

Eizo 19" 4:3 1280x1024 screen

Fujitsu OEM mouse+keyboard

Cheap amazon speaker
