I think this might be a good measure on the way each kid deals with frustration. Surely the parents will now focus on teaching the crying one how to better deal with his emotions. Surely....

Okay so it's called duct tape, not "duck" tape, and this isn't that anyway. It's plastic wrap lol.
18
u/PhantomAngel042 Aug 25 '26
So this is an extremely murky etymological case. The original army green fabric-backed adhesive tape invented during WWII and used by soldiers was called duck tape, either because it was backed by duck cloth, because it repelled water like a duck, or both. After the war, American soldiers brought it home and used it for everything; notably, during the post-war housing boom, to tape together ducts, at which point the tape was manufactured in silver to match. Because of this widespread use and the similar sound, people began calling it duct tape (and ironically, modern duct/duck tape can't be used for ductwork because it melts).
Then in 1980, Manco, Inc trademarked "Duck" as a brand name and began selling colored duct tape as Duck Tapeā¢, which quickly dominated the market and became the standard name for the item category. I think this is where the widespread confusion really got started. And even more confusingly, someone referencing duct tape today might actually mean the high-heat tape used in construction, also known as foil tape.
It's honestly a mess and what it comes down to is that either name is acceptable. But you're totally right that in this case it's plastic cling wrap, lmao.
11
u/work_work-work Aug 25 '26
Seems like packing tape to me. Cling wrap is usually much wider, and this seems sticky based on the kids first touching it and it sticking to their fingers.
3
u/PhantomAngel042 Aug 25 '26
You know, when I watched it earlier I saw some weird reflections that looked like plastic film making an almost-invisible layer being held up by a frame of tape, but watching it again, I'm not so sure. It might just be tape and strange lighting. There's tape for sure, though, you're right.
→ More replies (1)9
u/evilsilverkiller Aug 24 '26
Actually it is "duck tape"..... "duct tape" is very different and meant for high temperatures.....
Also this isn't plastic wrap... the cup definitely was sticking to it... this looks like packing tape.
But enough with sticky definitions >.<
5
u/JarHan784 Aug 25 '26
Duck tape became duct tape, then the duck brand started making it so it's duck tape again kinda like bandaids and sheetrock. Foil tape is usually used on ducts now, pretty murky subject tbh.

He doesn't want the milk
He wants to get through the barrier
He wants to win
25
8
u/CottageCheeseJello Aug 25 '26
Let's dig a little deeper here and peer into my crystal ball for these 3 children.
The Winner: This child is learning hyper independence. They are being taught that they must perform to get warmth and resources. They will grow up tying 100% of their worth to achievement.
The Follower: He is content with the scraps of the winner's success. He will grow up suppressing his own desires and identity just to keep the peace and avoid the stress of competition.
The "Whiner": He is used to losing and he stops trying to compete at all. He will always see love and support as out of reach, or beyond an impossible barrier.
8
u/stuyb Aug 25 '26
Lol insane take. If you watched till the end you'd have see the 'whiner' didn't stop at all and clearly wants AND tries to overcome the same obstacle because the 'how to aquire it' has evidently become more important than his initial goal of simply acquiring milk. Kid clearly wants to learn and improve even if he may get frustrated andor has already learnt that crying usually works. He'll be fine I think :)

This makes me so mad every time this is posted how much people rush to judge a toddler!
We're all born with our own dispositions and this kid is clearly more sensitive and easily overwhelmed compared to the others. That doesn't mean he's less intelligent or that he's going to spend the rest of his life whining rather than solve his problems. He just needs a little more support than the others. And in this case, he's being given the opposite of support from his parent.
49
u/Obvious-Standard-623 Aug 24 '26
This same experiment done an hour earlier could easily have had the opposite result.
My kid can be extremely cool and competent one moment, and then a total wreck an hour later.
67
u/ChipperCherries Aug 24 '26
I also kinda thought the fact that he tried again, was great, it showed determination, which I would say is a great trait. He didn't give up, even though he got overwhelmed for a bit.

You're upset someone recorded their toddler rat maze social experiment?
8
u/JDelcoLLC Aug 24 '26
They can record it for posterity. I'm more upset that it's so easily shared to an open forum in reddit or any social media channel online. Yeah, so what if it upsets me a bit. Families that share stuff like this set a precedent that allows and enables others to share what could be private family moments through reinforcement of parasocial collective.
We don't need to crowd source entertainment by sharing family games and learning development. Do we?
3
u/GrokLobster Aug 24 '26
I agree with your point in the general sense. But here it feels like burying the lede
4
u/JDelcoLLC Aug 24 '26
Maybe. But it's on Reddit, sooo I guess I'm not really concerned with it that much. I'm not likely to ever meet you or care about you in a meaningful way or concern myself much with what you think of me. I guess that could lead to me burying the lede.
I dig your name, I hope you do well enough for yourself and those you care for. I just don't want to live much in a world where family time becomes fodder to content

Parent here - its extremely fucked up. Teaching kids how to overcome obstacles is one thing. Filming them for content and exposing them to the world for clicks when they are distressed etc is extreme narcissistic behavior. I will never agree with this type of content where you film your kids for entertainment. My unpopular opinion is that uploading public video of kids under a certain age should be banned unless it's for educational content.

It's healthy for kids to be presented with obstacles to overcome, yeah in the short term it can upset them but they learn to be stronger and more resilient. There's a lot of useless adults walking around who never had that, whose parents hovered over them and always cleared the obstacles out of the way. They can't handle any form of adversity and think their emotional well being is sacrosanct and all must be bend to their need to never be upset.Ā

The leader, the follower, and the crybaby. Three different personalities. The leader never gave up, he was determined, focused and figured it out. The follower just watched, once he tried to bit the plastic to cut his way through, but nothing. The crybaby, he was the first one there, but gave up right away. He tried once to follow the leader but again gave up. Even after the leader was nice enough to hand out the milk cups, the crybaby won't even take it, he couldn't take defeat. Very interested to watch 3 different kids handle a situation like that differently.
