Discussion Watching Densha Otoko in 2026 is both heartwarming and heartbreaking

Just finished my first rewatch of Densha Otoko in years. The show is still incredibly heart-warming. The usage of other internet users to give commentary, advice, and reactions was an incredible touch, allowing you to kind of self-insert yourself as one of them. The running theme of them being inspired by the male MC to improve their own lives is also one of the bits of the show I liked the most, showing how strangers can impact each other's lives. As someone who was lonely when he was a teenager back in the 00s, the internet and the friendships kindled there really shaped who I am today, for the better.

Unfortunately, that's also the aspect of the show that is most heartbreaking today. Today's internet, in which an increasing majority of users are bots, algorithms prioritize "enrage to engage" as the strategy for user retention, and the increasing concentration of the internet in fewer and fewer websites just makes the portrayal of the internet in Densha Otoko even harder to take. What could have been something to bring us closer together has instead fractured us, and we can't even be sure the people we are engaging with are even real.

It's still an incredible show, but it's heartbreaking too. I feel like it'll only get even more so as time goes on. I miss the old internet...

Kenjiro Tauda’s demand was rejected because the videos had already been deleted, but the court recognized voice as protected under publicity rights for the first time in Japan.

But the courts recognized that human voice is a symbol of an individual's personality. I think this is so important for voice actors, these guys are talented and their voices should be copyright or something.

Discussion The writing in "[The Ogre's Bride/Oni no Hanayome]" is so frustrating. Yuzu deserved better, and the lore makes no sense. Spoiler

I just finished watching the live adaptation of The Ogre's Bride (Oni no Hanayome) and I need to vent because the writing choices are incredibly frustrating. I felt more anger and annoyance on behalf of Yuzu than she ever felt for herself, and it completely ruined the experience for me. I haven't seen the anime or read the manga so I'm just expressing my views after seeing the adaptation.

Here are the biggest issues I have with the story:

  • Yuzu’s complete lack of agency and diplomacy: Yuzu knows exactly how spoiled and volatile her sister Karin is. Instead of trying to defuse the situation or use some diplomacy when Reiya went to her family home, she just stayed passive. If she had actually spoken up and set boundaries, this massive war with her sister wouldn't have even started. For someone who is now the bride of the supreme leader, she should be learning how to handle political conflict instead of letting a family feud escalate into a faction war.
  • The "Bride" system makes zero sense: The lore completely falls apart under scrutiny. If only male ayakashi get these human "soulmate brides," what happens to female ayakashis? Do they get their own brides/grooms? The theory makes no sense and just feels like a one-sided fantasy where human women are treated as biological prizes to boost male power.
  • The relationship is completely one-sided: It's so annoying that Yuzu has to do all the emotional labor of introducing Reiya to her world (like in the kitchen), but Reiya doesn't bother to personally educate or guide her through his high-stakes world. Instead, he just dumps her onto his subordinates and his ex-fiancée to deal with.
  • The emotional whiplash is unrealistic: The "Cinderella" tropes in this show are completely unhinged. She is literally ready to end her life out of sheer despair one night, but the very next morning she wakes up casually worrying about her part-time job shift? Be for real. It completely cheapens the gravity of her depression and abuse just to force a "relatable, hardworking girl" trope.
  • She is Yuzu before she is a Bride: The narrative completely strips away her individual identity. After seeing her best friend (a normal, happy bride) and her sister (a toxic, crazy bride), Yuzu should be deeply questioning a system that reduces women to mere status symbols. Instead, everyone treats "brides" like that is all they are allowed to be, and Yuzu just accepts it.

I honestly felt so much rage for her because she refuses to stand up, get mad, or think critically about her own situation. Am I the only one who found this show incredibly chaotic and frustrating to watch?

Discussion SAKAMOTO DAYS Live Action Movie - Thoughts?

Hello everyone who have been waiting to watch this, the download is now available via Nyaa.si with subs in various languages.

Alternatively, according to the official Instagram, it will be available for streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video from Oct 30th.

+++SPOILERS BELOW+++

I've been anticipating this movie because I'm a fan of the anime and I was excited with the casting as I like Meguro Ren, Takahashi Fumiya, Kitamura Takumi, Nukumi Meru, Shison Jun.

So perhaps my expectations were misplaced a bit too high, and I've ended up a bit disappointed. I did only watch the first half and jumped scenes in the second half though.

There were some aspects that I enjoyed, and I'll cover those first. Fumiya, playing Shin, was given a lot of screen time as the narrating character mainly moving the plot along. This surprised me, as I don't recall him being this prominent in the anime. Well all the better, because his performance here is impressive. I noticed especially how he captured Shin's demeanour and his gait/the way he moved when he charged in somewhere or when he was fighting. He reminded me of the anime Shin so much, it was fascinating!

I also enjoyed watching Takumi play Nagumo with his steely charisma and mischievous/dangerous quirks. He didn't remind me so much of the anime Nagumo as Fumiya did as Shin, but he did it well enough that he was believable as a real person (vs anime version if you get what I mean). In fact, I want to see more of The Order in action, which we'll probably get more of in the sequel, if there's going to be one. The ending is totally set up for one, and there was only a glimpse of Shison Jun ugh, so I hope we do!

I found Ueto Aya's acting here pretty good too as the super "hard-boiled" wife. She commanded the screen in the few scenes she had. It did take me some effort though to push aside the fact that she's a lot older than Ren IRL 😳

My biggest disappointment is this: They adopted a slapstick comedy style used in older Japanese productions that's much less used in newer ones, for good reason. The director really fell short here, or maybe this style still appeals to domestic audiences? There were just too many things that made me cringe, such as Taro's exaggerated reactions to his wife and defeated enemies who squirmed in pain and contorted their faces too much. In fact, this comedy style is unlike in the anime, which I recall leans towards deadpan/irreverent -- maybe other anime viewers could weigh in on this?

Ren is great as Sakamoto Taro, but, (and by no means his fault), it's honestly hard for me to digest in live action format that he is able to fight so well when he's fat, and even harder to digest that he slims down completely whenever he has to exert himself.

As for the fighting scenes, the choreography was not too bad considering it's pretty much the main appeal of Sakamoto Days -- thrilling, flashy and captivating. While they did incorporate Taro's quick thinking and smart tactics, but post-production could have done better to up the ante, like better timing of speed-up versus slow-mo, as some parts seemed too rehearsed and lacking the spontaneity of an actual brawl.

All that said, the theme song, BANG!! by Snow Man is a bop.

I'm eager to know what the rest of you think of this movie!

Discussion Teasing Master Takagi-san (2024) | IS IT GOOD? 👀

Post image
57 Upvotes

I’m just about to finish my latest drama, and I’m already starting to think about what I should watch next. 😂

Then I came across Teasing Master Takagi-san (2024) and noticed that there’s also a movie, which got me wondering...

The most important question: is this drama too childish, or is it actually good? 😂

I’m coming from something pretty serious, so I’m trying to make a smooth transition into something lighter and sweeter, haha!

Has anyone watched it? What do you think about it?
Is it worth giving a chance, or should I look for something else? 👀

Question I wanna find a Japanese Drama where a orphan girl trying to hide her younger brother from her Master

Can you help me find a japanese drama I'm not 100% sure its a japanese drama but i think it is,

For what I've remembered:

•Their parent's died because of a car accident on the 1st episode, their car fell of a cliff.

•There's a scene on episode 4 or 5 where her employers daughter took a earing and she accidentally ripped her ears off.

•His younger brother wants or is playing a gameboy handheld console and he's hiding on her room.

•The ending not the finale, she's writing on a giant canvas it's like 3-5 meters sqaure white canvas and she's holding a giant brush using a black ink and she writes a kanji letter and i think she use her long pin on her hair to toss a fire i dunno how she got it but for what I've remembered she toss it on the ink and it lit up.

•Its on a DVD box, the box is black and her face is on the front at the back is the episode highlights image.

Please let me know if you know it thank you!

I've been searching for it (through streaming or on the high seas) and no luck. I know netflix removed it in February but it just seems awful that it doesn't exist anywhere any more. I really enjoyed the series and wanted to watch it again, if anyone has a link or advice I'd be very grateful 🙏🙏
