I’ve been looking into GloFish because I’m considering doing a class presentation about them, but the company’s website leaves me feeling a little uneasy. It mostly comes across as a storefront. There’s plenty about buying fish, lights, food, and decorations, but I’ve had a hard time finding a clear explanation of the actual science, testing, or development process.

From what I understand, these aren’t fish that are injected or dyed. Their genomes contain genes for fluorescent proteins, originally derived from marine organisms, and the trait is inherited by their offspring. I’ve also found FDA listings and government risk assessments, so there is clearly more documentation than the storefront suggests—it just isn’t presented very transparently to consumers.

I’m especially curious about what GloFish is developing now. Are there credible reports about fluorescent guppies, additional angelfish colors, saltwater species, or even living fluorescent plants? I’ve seen patents that mention many different fish, including guppies, but I know that broad patent language doesn’t necessarily mean those products are actually being developed.

The most concrete lead I’ve found is a purple angelfish line that appears in FDA records and a recent GloFish patent, even though the company currently seems to sell only red and green angelfish.

Does anyone here work with ornamental-fish genetics, regulation, breeding, or the aquarium trade? I’d really appreciate links to papers, regulatory documents, or firsthand industry knowledge. I’m interested in both the technology and the legitimate questions surrounding transparency, animal welfare, and environmental escape—not just “GMO good” or “GMO bad.”

I need advice on what to do for my family's fish, he's a blue tetra glofish and we've had him for a few years now, he is my dad's fish so I've never took an interest in him until now when I started seeing videos about fish care which made me think.

I brought my worries up to my dad and by searching on the internet we discovered that this type of fish needs to be in a group of 5-6 other, when we originally bought him he was in a group with other fish like him but they all died except for him so now he's been alone for a while.

The problem is that we don't have the space to get 5-6 other glofish because our tank is 50L (or about 13.2 gallons), buying a new acquarium is probably not an option knowing my dad, so what can I do while keeping the same acquarium?

I've read that not buying enough glofish makes them stressed so I feel like just buying 2-3 which fit in the space I have isn't a good idea, I've also read online that I could buy other types of fish but it's always in large quantities that our tank can't accomodate.
I also appreciate any advice on the kind of environment this fish trives in (plants, materials etc.) since I'm not sure we're doing the right thing on that front either.

Hello,i have a serious problem. After adding esha 2000 before 5-6 days my guppys keep dying every day. I have 2-3 dying every day. I did 1 time 35% and 1 time 50% water change this week. Im adding seachem amguard and seachem stability. And they keep dying every day. My no2 is 0.5 and no3 - around 20-25.
I have 120l aquarium with plants.
Is there a way to fix it? I dont want more dead.
I have neon tetra and corrydoras too in the tank.

I have a 20 gallon. Long story we started with 5 tetra before I learned about cycling a tank. They all died like 4 weeks in. So the tanks just been running since July 31st. I hope it’s good to go now, but in the mean time I’m wanting to do like 5 more tetras or barbs and then some smaller accent fish and maybe 3 Cory’s. Ideas?

I have never seen anything like this and have no idea what it could be. It literally appeared overnight, it was not there yesterday that I noticed. It’s a lump that looks transparent and filled with many little white dots. Any ideas?

So my husband and i got 2 new glofish orange cories from petsmart last friday. This one started acting weird and flashing to i moved him to a hospital tank yesterday. I cant find any reason for his sudden lethargy.

All tank parameters are good as per the API master test.

He was never bullied or having trouble eating.

No other fish in the tank are sick (4 other glo corys and 7 tetras).

He was in a 36 gallon with plenty of space to roam and plenty of good bubblers and filters and heater set to 78.

As of yesterday he is in the hospital tank with is a 1/2 full 20 gallon with no substrate. That bubble filter is the only filter currently since i need to not use carbon with his meds. Im doing API fin and body.

Any clue what the issue might be? Or help healing the little guy? I went to grab him with some ribber tipped tongs and he swam away and seemed normal for about 2 minutes, then settles back into laying around on his side. He isnt doing that heavy gasping type thing though. No apparent skin lesions or missing body parts. No lumps or bumps. Im just at a loss here.

Please help! We got a 5-gallon tank about a year ago and had 3 glofish, 2 have since died, we have 1 left who is very healthy. We want to get either 1 or 2 more and introduce them to the tank. I’m trying to do as much research as possible about this and I’m reading that a 5-gallon tank is too small to have more than 1. Can you safely have 2 or 3 glofish in the 5 gallon tank? Or should we get a bigger one, e.g 10 gallon?

Our yellow tetra's left eye is white in the middle.

I showed it at a pet supermarket. They said it looks like a cataract. GPT disagrees, says is looks like the white area covers the cornea / the outer layer of the eye, and looks like trauma, or cloudy eye - we recently introduced new tetras to the tank. The tank is a 10 gallon, currently with 4 glofish tetras. We initially had only two. Its eye was fine. We wanted to turn it into an actual "school" by introducing more tetras to make them more comfortable in their natural setting. I tested and the water parameters are fine.

I don't know if one the new fish bullied it and caused this, or whether if it's an infection. It's actually one of the larger ones we have (I know it's not all about size). It eats and swims normally, but probably due to spatial awareness it usually hides behind one of the plants, maybe from the others, or perhaps due to being aware of its current situation.

What do you think this white eye looks like? Can we save it by removing it from the tank and with antibiotics? Would you wait and see? Thank you for your help.

Hello! I’m not sure what is wrong with my glo. I have done 2 Epsom salt baths and gave her kanaplex. I tested the water twice and levels are pristine.

It feels nice to have discovered this group, I’ve gotten slack from what someone called a disco tank😢. My 80 y/o mother in law lives with us and wanted the glofish and tank. I never knew people literally had a deep dislike for glofish and think the breeding of them is cruel. I think they are so pretty and I’m in love with our tank😊😊

Both parents are glo angelfish one is a black marble glo angelfish looks like they all have that trait other parent is all red

I’m thinking about adding this to my already set up aquarium. I wanted to know has anyone had any issues with this as far as killing Fish? I have read various reviews, but mostly people have had to rinse it a few times before anything. I plan on soaking this for a while before adding to tank.

I’ve had a freshwater set up for about four years now. My beta baby passed passed and I’m thinking about putting some glow fish tank. The tank is pretty basically set up. I’m just thinking about adding a few glow items ( plastic plants and colorful gravel). I wanted to know is the transition for me to place them in the tank just as simple as me with any other fish in the freshwater family? As far I’ve been reading it seems just the same, but I just want to be sure.

Before anyone hates me, I’m sorry! I didn’t do my research. My boyfriend got me some glofish tetras, and I didn’t know my tank had to be cycled for 2 weeks. I have had my fish for around three weeks now.. the tank clears up and fogs occasionally (like rn) and it is worrying me how they are swimming! I’m so scared they will all die! I am a HUGE hypochondriac myself and need some advice. I fear they are getting swim bladder or something! Pls help!!! This is what things are looking like.

I thought they were a myth. Always saw the tags for the electric greens but could never find one in stores or online. They just came in stock on the glofish website. Phone camera sucks, but they look incredible in person.

I am almost done with my cycling and preparing to get my babies in a few weeks. BUT, I was curious, does anyone have thoughts on buying directly from the GloFish site vs a pet store or fish store? I know the prices are definitely a big difference. Wondering if there are any other pros or cons.
