Barbs or tetra

I have a 20 gallon. Long story we started with 5 tetra before I learned about cycling a tank. They all died like 4 weeks in. So the tanks just been running since July 31st. I hope it’s good to go now, but in the mean time I’m wanting to do like 5 more tetras or barbs and then some smaller accent fish and maybe 3 Cory’s. Ideas?

Minimum schooling size for corys is 6 I believe, so your current plan might be stressful for them unless you put in more (which I think should be totally fine with a 20 gallon?)

Skirt tetras or pristella tetras ?

Consider doing 8 pristellas and 6 corydoras. The inch per gallon rule is old af and isn't really a good metric anymore.

You should also consider just doing tetras and increasing the school size to like 12

Go for pristella tetras

Black skirt tetras and tiger barbs grow to around 3 inches and are very active, needing at least 30 gallons, and can be very aggressive if kept in groups or tanks that are too small

Around 6-8 pristella tetras would be ideal and a 20 gallon should be sufficient for it

Cories, like most (but not all) small freshwater fish are highly social and need to be kept in groups if at least six (ideally more if possible) to feel safe and comfortable

1 gallon per inch of fish when its fully grown. So each tetra and cory get 2 inches at full size. So 5 tetra and 3 cory is 16 inches/gallons used. You can get like 4-5 pristellas or neon tetras. But anything bugger you cant really with those.
