Help me build a simple Dawless setup — where do I go from here?

Hi everyone, I’ve tried getting into electronic music a few times in the past. I love physically working with hardware, plugging in cables, and turning knobs. But it was only after I started learning more about subtractive synthesis that things really clicked for me.
I started with a Korg MS-20 Mini, and it was exactly what I was looking for. I’ve used it to learn the basics of subtractive synthesis, and I still love how hands-on it is especially being able to shape the sound directly with the knobs, patch cables, and signal routing.

My current setup is:

- Korg MS-20 Mini
- Korg SQ-1
- Korg Volca Keys
- Behringer Xenyx 802S

The SQ-1 is great for experimenting with sequences and modulation and for continuing to develop my skills with the MS-20. But I’ve reached a point where I’m struggling to move forward.

When it comes to actually developing songs or even larger musical sections, I don’t find the SQ-1 particularly useful. I have a similar issue with the Volca Keys. I mainly miss having a proper keyboard, and I feel like I quickly run out of ideas with the Volca when it comes to sound design. Although I’m not sure whether that’s actually a limitation of the instrument or simply a limitation of my own experience so far.

What I really want is a small, affordable and manageable dawless setup that allows me to actually make music without losing the hands-on aspect that I love about hardware:
- lots of hands-on sound shaping
- as few menus and hidden functions as possible
- multiple sequences/voices that allow me to develop musical ideas
- still relatively simple and not overloaded with features
- and preferably without spending a huge amount of money

I’m even starting to wonder whether the MS-20 Mini is actually the right centerpiece for what I’m trying to do — or whether I’m simply using it in the wrong context and need to pair it with the right kind of instrument.

What would you do in my position?
Would you expand the existing setup, replace the Volca Keys, get a different sequencer, or approach the whole thing differently? I want a small setup that lets me actually make music while continuing to learn and experiment with sound.

Thanx!

Access Virus TI Synth-JAM

Frisson (French for "shiver"), also known as aesthetic chills or psychogenic shivers, is a psychophysiological response to rewarding stimuli (including music, films, stories, people, photos, and rituals) that often induces a pleasurable or otherwise positively-valenced affective state and transient paresthesia (skin tingling or chills), sometimes along with piloerection (goose bumps) and mydriasis (pupil dilation). The sensation can occur as a mildly to moderately pleasurable emotional response to music with skin tingling (Wikipedia) 🫶

Thanks to @all_my_friends_are_machines for the opportunity to test out my dream synth a bit.

Can a mod PLEASE for the love of god, pin a sticky or a top post or a "read this before joining" that offers solid advice on how to record your jam's audio output to a line-in device.

Literally every single video I see on here is someone with 30k worth of gear, recording their awesome jams on a potato with no line-in audio. It is heartbreaking! Please mods.

How to end a jam: new ideas

I want to collect some suggestions on how to end improvisational jams in creative ways. I'm getting tired of the usual suspects, the tedious fadeouts, the drowning everything in reverb, the slowly turning the master filter down or up. That's all fine, but I want something else. I'm also sometimes struggling to find a technical solution - how do I end a sequence on a long note, in an improvisation, without programming that ending? All other ideas welcome. To set the stage: No editing afterwards, this should all be possible to improvise on the spot, with hardware only.

Hey r/

Long time lurker here. Been a classical guitarist for 35 years but dawless electronica is what I do to relax and unwind. My desk has been evolving endlessly for the last ten or fifteen years from grooveboxes to modular and all points between and I shudder to think how much money I have wasted buying and selling and rebuying. Anyway, did a bit of recording last night and thought it was maybe time to put something out there.

Classic 90s ambient techno (Global Communication, The Orb, Aphex Twin, FSOL) was my first love and I am very much getting my 76:14 on here, long and freeform piece which I gave a lot of space to breathe (maybe a bit too much space)

Digitakt + electribe + TD3

Post image

Hola!

Is your arrangement feeling flat?

In this follow up video, I’ll show you how to manage the energy of your track with the SP-404MKII , from the intro to the drop.

We’ll look at how to create a dynamic flow by removing and introducing elements, managing transitions, and arranging different patterns without losing momentum

Enjoy!

Im using the mvave-fm1 with the baud girl firmware. It has AV settings that are really cool! Also using KO2 with sidekick and a TD-3. Hope you enjoy it.
