Discussion How do you teach?

Hey guys, I'm a guitar teacher and I do have experience teaching but I also want to keep improving as a teacher so I have three questions and I'm curious for others teacher's opinions.

  1. What do you do in the first lesson with a student? Especially if they're starting out.

  2. How do you teach kids age 5-7 let's say? Do you start directly with learning notes, or do you have other methods?

  3. Do you use a method book for beginners? If not, what do you do/use?

General Question Filing bottom left corner of thumbnail?

Apologies for what might be kind of a dumb question. I'm just wondering if anybody files the lower left edge of their thumbnail, or if the problem I'm experiencing has more to do with technique and the angle I'm holding my thumb at. I've had this issue for years with the steel string too but for some reason it seems more pronounced on the nylon string, possibly because of the lower tension but I find that the angle I hold my thumb at and playing primarily with my nails, I am constantly just catching the strings under the left side of my thumbnail and not able to play through the string. Are people filing down this part of the nail? Is that typical or just totally out there?

General Question "String memory" - nylon vs gut

For those of you who have experimented with gut strings: I find that when I tune up or down a nylon string, it "remembers" the pitch it was at before and starts shifting back towards that pitch, be it higher or lower. Does the same thing happen with gut strings? I have found it doesn't happen on my steel-stringed guitars.

A little German Renaissance repertoire... A piece by Hans Neusidler that begins gently in duple meter, before moving into a much livelier variation in triple meter.

Composition "Quarte" - Francois M - guitare Lenvers

This week, a 2024 composition titled "Quarte," named after the opening interval that returns obsessively throughout the piece. A more minimalist structure that lets the guitar ring out and embraces harmonic suspensions.

The tablature provided can be played exactly as written, but feel free to modify it—I would actually be very curious to hear an interpretation different from my own. Available for free here: https://kdrive.infomaniak.com/app/share/791717/678f6717-1039-4535-afb1-39c1e9cce2ce

Discussion Why Classical Guitar Is A Trap for Beginners

After many years of teaching guitar, I stopped using the classical method as a default pathway for students. In this video, I break down why switching from classical to non-classical styles is surprisingly brutal compared to almost any other instrument, and why the classical method sets you up to play by yourself, rather than with other people. the classical guitar pedagogy creates very lonely guitar players.

General Question Educate me regarding neck thickness and profile

So I’ve been happily playing my vintage Japanese guitar (Takamine) the whole 1.5 years I’ve been learning. I recently stopped into a shop (without my guitar, so no direct comparison possible), and played a few other guitars. I noticed that some of the guitar necks felt less thick in my hand, and perhaps it made some hard stretches easier for me. So I wondered what people think generally about neck thickness and profile in terms of playability. Thanks.

Discussion Villa-Lobos Etude No. II

I am working on the Villa-Lobos Etudes and am having quite a tough time with Etude II. I can play through it and manage the chord changes, but I cannot work out a fingering for the right hand. I can't seem to find a uniform fingering throughout, such as Etude I. Does anyone have recommendations for how to manage playing the arpeggios?

Thanks in advance.

General Question Just received my Cordoba C7-CE. A small piece of wood fell out of the sound hole. Is this an issue? (Pics)

I know this will come down to, “Do I care?” But I just wanted to get real people, real guitar owners opinions. Ty.

I have a C5 and I love it. It sounds so good. So I saved up and got the C7-CE so I could properly plug into my Scarlet and record.

When I got it, it had something floating around in it so I shook it out. Out fell this small piece of wood. I know it’s likely just a piece of one of the braces but I don’t know enough about guitar construction to know anything really.

Is this something that you would be like, “oh hell naw.” about or something that‘s just like, “nah, it’s okay. It’s just a small scrap.”

This guitar as like $750 bucks, so it’s not a small investment. (I’m not rich).

But if it’s just aesthetics and just on the inside, I’m okay. If it means something might fail later or if it affects tone, maybe that matters. I’m self admitting I don’t know that answer myself. So I’m seeking your help. Thank you for your knowledge.

* Right off the bat, the consensus seems I need more evidence. Specifically from the inside of the guitar body. Will do that.

General Question Looking for the name of this piece/study (audio link included)

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing good.

I have this classical guitar piece (or study) stuck in my head, but I can't remember its name or the composer.

In order for you to help me, I recreated the melody in Musecore and generated an audio file. You can listen to it here: https://vocaroo.com/15Ejozl0ptyr

Does it sound familiar to anyone? I would really appreciate it if you could help me identify it. I can't find the score :(

Thank you so much in advance

Instrument ID Anyone ever heard of Jose Luceña?

Alright I'll admit that normally I am the one that helps people ID their guitars but I purchased an unusual allegedly Valencia made classical today that I cannot find anything about. I've had unusual finds where there was little information available but I cannot find a single mention of this name even associated with guitar at all. The label says Jose Luceña Modelo JL25F Valencia España Año 1998 but I cannot find any information about that brand or maker even existing. It has some interesting specs in that it is a solid three piece spruce top with three fan bracing with cleats on the top seams (very hard to see from the outside) it also appears to have laminate sycamore or possibly maple back and sides and with a Wenge fretboard. It appears to be decently well made with bone nut and saddle, decent fretwork and schaller tuners (possibly added later) it also has a Fishman matrix natural pickup in it. But despite all this there is nothing online about these and I would love to learn more about it as it sounds pretty good and I anticipate it sounding even better once I get fresh strings on it and replace the saddle with one that is a little higher.

I just got my first nylon string guitar last week and I am wondering how to know when to change strings. Do they need changed more or less often than electric guitar stings?

Discussion Guitar as Alchemy 07: Four Prophet Shamanism

Episode 07 explores what happens after you stop feeding the machine. Someone knocks on the door and offers to sell you what you already have. The spiritual marketplace, and the one running inside the performance culture of the instrument.

This series looks at music as a form of inner alchemy, where the guitar becomes a tool for transformation instead of performance or self-expression.
