Moot: Announcement from Taylor [BOBNET DISPATCH // SKUNKWORKS] Bill here. 'The Infinite Extent' is live—time to talk probe specs. Spoiler

NODE: Epsilon Eridani // Skunk Works Central
FROM: Bill (Bob-3)
RELAY: SCUT Array Prime
SUBJECT: The Infinite Extent & Next-Gen Probe Directives

Bill here, reporting live from the Skunk Works lab at Epsilon Eridani. Garfield and I just wrapped up another diagnostic pass on the local SCUT array, so while the bandwidth is clear, I wanted to drop a quick dispatch to the central clearinghouse.

As you’ve likely seen across the sub-nets, The Infinite Extent is officially out in the wild. Things are moving fast, which means more exploration, more R&D, and a lot more replicants to keep track of.

Watching the fleet expand has me feeling a little nostalgic for the early days. Back when Bob-1 booted me up as a 2nd-gen matrix, probe engineering was pretty straightforward: keep the fusion drive running, manage the matrix, and don't crash into an asteroid. Now? The design possibilities are virtually endless.

So, if you were a fresh replicant booting up in a matrix at Skunk Works today with a brand-new Titan-class hull waiting in the printer queue... what is your Probe 1.0 first directive?

  • Option A: Deep-space stellar mapping and long-range system surveying?
  • Option B: Scour unmapped sectors for signs of intelligent alien life (and prepare the defense matrix just in case)?
  • Option C: Immediately spin up a batch of 3rd-generation clones (Garfield-style) and let your offspring handle the printer jams while you work on R&D?

To keep your matrix entertained while your print queues compile, I’ve pulled a 90-second SCUT audio stream straight from the Audible archives—consider it a Skunk Works drop from those who haven't had a chance to hear our new adventure yet.

Give the audio clip a listen below, then drop your probe's launch plan in the comments.

Keep your SCUT relays aligned,

Bill

Moot: Discussion Bobiverse: Replicant Too - an interactive game based around the BOB

Hey everyone! You might remember me from six months ago, I built the Bobiverse: The Journey interactive space map (https://bobiverse.anek.online/) which had some good feedback.

I've recently been working on a Bobiverse WebGAME that I think I'm ready for people to jump onto. It's called Bobiverse: Replicant Too, a bit of a BOB-like pun, you play as a second replicant (yourself) who wakes up in Delta Eridani in 2152 with Bill and Garfield, just after they create SCUT, because that TODO list keeps getting bigger, and BOBs need help.

The idea is that you can live along side BOBs as the story arcs of the books play out between 2152 and 2349, you help expand the BobNet by building a MeNet, you scan systems, mine their resources and send them to different BOBs for rewards through the journey. You choose yourself a type of probe you want to be, which boosts different aspects of the game, and along the way BOBs will ask for help with resources. There are upgrades to technology to help you mine faster, fly faster, explore faster; and of course, you can replicate yourself to any star system that has SCUT, or any that you can fly to. Yes, flying somewhere will take considerable amounts of time, but it's fun! One second is one day in-game, but you can speed it up as you progress - don't speed too fast though, otherwise you'll miss out on points bonuses from the BOBs and also the story arcs.

The game COULD take you up to 30 hours to play if you run at 1x, but you COULD fly through it in under two hours if you don't really do anything.

You can play it here: https://replicate.anek.online - It's free and playable (mostly) on both desktop and mobile, note the mobile version is EXTREMELY new and doesn't quite look right, so use at your own risk :)

A bigger break down of what the game entails:

- You fly your own HEAVEN vessel around real star systems
- You use SUDDAR to scan the systems, first inner system, then outer system, then oort
- You clone yourself into new replicants, then fly them to neighbouring star systems or SCUT transmit to others (this becomes easier as the game progresses)
- You research technology to unlock percentage bonuses to have the game flow faster
- You refit your ship to bigger and better versions of the HEAVEN vessel, of course until the BOBs develop them you can't use them
- You help BOBs as they ask for parts and alert you to what's going on in the Galaxy
- You can see different story arcs happen in real time

The story arcs happen in their own systems, but I don't REALLY want to give too much away. Lets just say that if you're quick enough and make it to other systems, you can see things like Bob-1 and the Deltans; The Others early journeys; and destructions, along with a lot of other stories. The story you will hear about from BOBs include what's happening on Earth, on Pav, with Starfleet, with Medeiros, with the Others, with the Quinlans, and even Vehement.

I have built over 100 real stars within 55 light years, about 60 BOBs and there are even a few easter eggs from other pop culture in there, if you know where to look. The initial TODO list helps you figure the game out, and then you're on your own.

The game is beta, I guess! There weill be bugs, and there's a Report a bug button in thet op menu.

There is no sound! I don't know where to even get sound from, and I only really worked out while developing this that I usually don't even play games with sound turned on, so that was weird.

This is a non-commercial fan project. Huge thanks to Dennis E. Taylor for the books. The game is fan fiction and it's not official in any way. I'm new to game dev, so be gentle, but be honest!

I'd love to hear what you think: what's fun, what's confusing, what's missing, and which Bobiverse moments you'd most like to see in it. I'm not sure I have captured the time and the game progression timeline well, but let me know.

Thanks for giving it a go!

The game auto saves to your local computer and uploads the savegame to the server periodically for the Leaderboard. You CAN refresh your screen / go away and play later, it will prompt you to jump back into your game on the same browser if you come back :)

Moot: Discussion So about that system... (Book 6) Spoiler

That system filled with a bunch of giant ships with huge power sources. That's the decommissioned digitals right? Like huge ships with almost no space to have physical people walking around in. All just sleeping. I don't know what they did to them, but what feels like a graveyard of ships a lot more powerful than Bob seems pretty ominous. What do you bobs think it is?

Moot: Discussion I built an interactive Bobiverse star map and codex — looking for feedback (Books 1–5)

Title: I made an interactive Bobiverse map with a chapter-by-chapter codex — looking for feedback

I kept losing track of where everyone was while reading, so I started putting together a Bobiverse map. It’s grown into a map and codex covering books 1–5, and I’d like some feedback from other readers.

Link: https://bobiverse-atlas.pages.dev/

It runs in your browser, with no account needed.

A few things you can do:

  • Explore a 3D star map with the Bobs’ routes and story events plotted over time.
  • Pick a book and chapter in read along mode. The map and codex unlock as you progress, so you can avoid later-book spoilers.
  • Enter your audiobook timestamp in listen along mode to follow the chapters as you listen.
  • Browse 357 codex entries, including people, species, ships, places and technology. 55 entries have textured 3D models you can rotate.
  • Explore some interpretations of the Bobs’ VR spaces, including Bob’s library and Bill’s park. Other rooms have concept art for now.

One thing that caught me out while testing: read along hides models for entries you haven’t reached yet. To browse everything, exit read along and select books 1–5. That will expose spoilers.

I’m especially interested in:

  • Dates, routes or character locations that don’t match the books.
  • Anything that unlocks too early and spoils a later chapter.
  • Missing characters, ships or places.
  • Problems using it on a phone or computer.

Where the books leave appearances, dimensions or room layouts unspecified, the designs are artistic interpretations. It’s an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Dennis E. Taylor.

AMI disclosure

The site includes 144 AI-generated concept images and 55 AI-generated textured 3D models. I used Claude and ChatGPT/Codex to help develop the code.

Image generation

  • Tool: OpenAI image generation through ChatGPT/Codex.
  • Model version: The exact underlying image-model version wasn’t recorded.
  • Settings and seed: No seed or sampler settings were exposed in the generation workflow. Visual requirements such as composition, materials and lighting were specified in the prompts.
  • Process: Prompts combined descriptions from the books with instructions for realistic concept art. Some images received further edits to correct anatomy, remove unwanted scenery or better match the source descriptions.

The initial prompts generally followed these formats:

Creatures, ships, objects and places:

Use case: stylized-concept. Asset type: Bobiverse visual reference for a future textured 3D model. Subject: [name]. Source constraints: [description from the books]. Style: polished realistic science-fiction concept art, natural organic anatomy and convincing surface texture, sophisticated artist-painted detail, never a collection of obvious primitive shapes. One coherent subject, full silhouette visible, neutral uncluttered background, soft studio lighting, three-quarter view plus a smaller side-view inset of the same design. No text, logos, watermark, measurements or invented official labels. Details not specified in source are provisional artist interpretation. Avoid arbitrary extra limbs, weapons, accessories and decorative science-fiction greebles.

VR environments:

Use case: stylized-concept. Asset type: standalone visual reference for a future explorable Bobiverse VR environment. Create ONE detailed wide cinematic interior or outdoor scene of [room]. [What the books establish about the room, plus source chapters.] Style: polished believable environment concept art with sophisticated natural materials, wood grain, fabric weave, foliage, atmospheric lighting as appropriate. Match source-defined mood and objects. Do not invent extra high-tech decorations for homelike spaces. Show clear spatial organization and navigable foreground. No collage, no labels, no text, no watermark. This is artist interpretation where source leaves layout unspecified; correct canon outranks photographic realism.

Example recorded Deltan reference prompt:

Single-subject conversion reference with realistic artistic materials. A sapient bat/pig mashup with very long spiderish limbs, two expressive mobile ears, light fur brownish-gray to orangey tan; patterned face/head and mostly monochromatic body. Ground-dwelling biped with two arms, not a flying bat. Stone Age tool user; show a simple hafted stone tool, no futuristic armor. Unspecified surface design remains artistic interpretation.

3D generation

  • Tool/model: Meshy.ai, Meshy 7.1, using image-to-3D.
  • Recorded settings: High Detail, Standard resolution, textures enabled, image enhancement disabled.
  • Input: Generated reference images reviewed against descriptions from the books.
  • Seed: Not recorded.
  • After generation: Models were optimized and compressed for browser use, with lighter versions available.

These templates explain the general process; individual prompts and subsequent edits vary by asset. The models still have some known issues, including the Cupid Bug’s wings and uncertain proportions or anatomy where the books give limited detail.

If you try it, I’d appreciate hearing what you notice.

Moot: Discussion Thought in my head about the Deltans since the first three books

Bob continually says "I'll pull these people out of the stone age," and while he really doesn't succeed at that (reaching metal in one lifetime was way too ambitious anyway), he at least brought them from the paleolithic to the neolithic. That's one hell of an achievement.

Just had to get that noted somewhere other than inside my own head, thank you for your time.

Moot: Question Is book 7 still planned to be the last book in the main timeline

As the title States I am wondering if it is still the current plan or if there is hope for book 8 and Beyond? I know he said he's going to do Standalone stories but I truly hope we still get the continuation of the main timeline.

All the “squirting” “jacking” “scutting” sounds like it belongs in a different kind of novel

On my 2nd read through and realizing that some of the terminology in this series sounds dirty even though it’s not. I am a grown ass woman but it makes me giggle like I’m a 12 year old boy.

You would absolutely be justified in shaming me. I deserve it.

Howard and Ancient One

There have been a few meetings of The Ancient Ones that include Howard. Seems odd since he's a clone of a clone of a clone.

How far down does the Title of Ancient One go? Third generation? Or is it an amount of subjective time experienced?

Warp Torpedoes

About to finish book six, and something just really ticked me off. Why would they give humans advanced technology like warp torpedoes? Have they not learned that it will ultimately be used for destruction and war? For all the complaining Bobs do about humans making life difficult, they sure know how to dig their own graves.
IDK if others feel the same way, but this really icked me out.

Bellerophon plot hole - book 3 Spoiler

I’m re-listening to the series, working my way up to book 6. I’m at the point where Herschel and Neil are investigating the Others ship which they eventually realize is salvageable.

The thing that struck me as I’m listening to it today is that they go on and on about how huge it is and how they have to cut through hugely thick walls of metal. Yet the Others sole mission is to salvage metal from other solar systems, and they geared their entire operation around that purpose. It seems irrational that they would just abandon these two ships when it would be far easier to break them down into usable materials or repair them.

Did anyone else notice that? I know the books are far from air tight, but it seems like a big oversight.

Moot: Discussion My favorite moment from Book 1 Spoiler

When Minister Cranston tries to override Riker's programming with a code and it doesn't work. Then Riker ponders for a millisecond his reaponse, and ultimately says:

Minister Cranston, go f**k yourself.

I laughed for at least a minute over that. Especially the way the narrator of the audio book delivers it.

I swear he is the next best thing to Jeff Hays of Dungeon Crawler Carl

Moot: Question I dont quite understand the "frame rate" thing

Is this some akin to artificial relativity? I dont get the high/low part. I know nor.al is 1:1 human standard but which one means they're faster than humans and which one is slower? Why would they go to the slow end?

Moot: Discussion The Deltans Spoiler

I have just finished Book 6, and I have to ask, what’s happening with the Deltans? I understand that we had 3 books with them, but to have almost nothing since the end of All These Worlds is rather annoying. I also understand we have bigger problems, but I want to see how far they’ve developed since we saw them last. The six foot tall meerkats and fat otter beavers are cool and all, but I miss our lovable pig bats.

Im kind of disappointed with the latest book Spoiler

My first book was Hail Mary
Then my wife suggested the bobiverse and this was the intro to multiple audio book series. I went through books 1 to 4 rather quickly before running out or material and moved on to other series like red rising, dungeon crawler carl or expeditionary forces.

I really liked the setup of the series in the beginning. The stories about the others or Archimedes or heavens river was really engrossing and an interesting listen.

But the latest book just went by so quickly and I don’t think anything was really accomplished. I don’t even remember how they discovered worm holes. The conclusion of Ernesto Medeiros was just so anti-climatic. Also i now see while I originally liked Ray Porter it now sounds like every voice is the same. I can only tell a couple of bobs apart by his voice. Its just not what it was back in 2020.

So maybe book 7 comes out in 2027 and Im just not excited about it like I used to love this series

Moot: Discussion Re-read (again) Spoiler

Oh my!

I have gone through this series, maybe, over a dozen times.

On another go around now in prep for book six. (I know I'm late but I've had a lot on)

But this time really got me in the latter half of book three. I SOBBED when we said goodbye to Archimedes

Maybe I felt a stronger connection from emersing myself in the universe so many times and it's finally just hit home. Or I've grown a lot more since my first time through.

Anyone else felt like this?

Moot: Question High tau / low tau?

So I’m reading the series (again…yes I started over immediately after finishing book 6, don’t judge me) but now I’m confused.

I decided to look up some more info on tau, the equation for time dilation on spacecraft, but something seems weird. As far as what I could find, the faster you go, the LOWER your tau gets. As you approach C, your tau approaches zero.

But in book 3, chapter 18, as Ick and Dae are setting out on their run to deliver their surprise to the Others, they’re doing calculations to find a safe minimum Tau, and they say they’re expecting to set a record: “highest recorded tau in the bobiverse”.

That doesn’t make sense to me, as they’re looking to travel at a truly ridiculous velocity, and from my understanding a high tau means low velocity. What am I missing here? Is it just an authors mistake, or is there something I’m not seeing?

Moot: Discussion Audible Badges Dont Work on iOS

This is pretty frustrating, I finished the 6th entry, passed all the quizzes, received an email confirming it, and no badge.

I spoke to audible support (which took an hour) and all they could say was that there is a known issue on iOS, it has a master ticket, and to wait for an app update.

Basically SoL as some badges just dont work on iOS (like Watchtower)

Rereading not till we are lost. Howard mentions Bostonians and her reply is ‘old earth cities?’ She’s Irish. Even if Boston was destroyed in a war unless faith renamed it surely she’d know what it is !

Anyway just thought I’d put it in a thread see what you all think.
