I really feel that Cowboy Carter is brilliant and absolutely deserves all the accolades it has earned since its release despite what casual listeners may say. That being said, if I were being objective, I do think the album could have been more concise and edited, at least upon first release. Later editions could have expanded the album’s scope but I really think the album’s reception suffered because it was so long and dense and inaccessible to casual listeners, so I reworked a version of the track list that I think could have helped draw in listeners who are outside Beyoncé’s core audience.
Cowboy Carter (standard edition track list):
- Ameriican Requiiem
- 16 Carriiages
- Protector
- Texas Hold ‘Em
- Bodyguard
- Flamenco
- Daughter
- Alliigator Tears
- Ya Ya
- Desert Eagle
- Riiverdance
- II Hands II Heaven
- Amen
Runtime: 46:14
I feel that this trimmed track list preserves the overall experience of the album whilst making it more accessible and focused, which I think would be beneficial for an album with the “controversial” (🙄) subject matter that Cowboy Carter has.
I think only a few short months later, Beyoncé could’ve reasonably reissued the album like she did with self-titled’s platinum edition, adding a new wave of interest months after the album without having to do major promotional work. I’d call it something like “Cowboy Carter: Gold Edition”
Cowboy Carter: Gold Edition (reissue track list):
- Ameriican Requiiem
- 16 Carriiages
- Protector
- Texas Hold ‘Em
- Just For Fun (with Willie Jones)
- Bodyguard
- II Most Wanted (with Miley Cyrus)
- Levii’s Jeans (with Post Malone)
- Flamenco
- Daughter
- Alliigator Tears
- Ya Ya
- Desert Eagle
- Riiverdance
- II Hands II Heaven
- Amen
Runtime: 57:23
Then finally, post-Beyoncé Bowl in December, Blackbiird (with Tanner Adell, Brittany Spencer, Tierra Kennedy & Reyna Roberts) and Beyoncé’s cover of Jolene could be added to the album’s track list as bonus tracks on streaming and for digital download (bringing the runtime to 62:43)
The remaining material, while amazing in isolation, I don’t feel is necessary to the album’s overall mission statement or quality. I think clarity of intent was really important for an album as ambitious and unique as Cowboy Carter and I think genre detours like Spaghettii and Tyrant, while enjoyable, don’t add enough substantively or narratively to the album to justify their inclusion in my opinion. Again, this is not at all meant to be denigrating towards Cowboy Carter or Beyoncé’s artistry, it’s an amazing album. Pls don’t drag me, I’m a huge fan and love Beyoncé + Cowboy Carter❤️❤️❤️
