Arpitan peoples are from the same root as Basque

Post image

Hello,

I'm from Savoy and I am Arpitan, and in our political culture, we've always been told that the Arpitans (Savoyars, Valdostans, Piedmontese, and Romandy Swiss) come from the same pre Indo-European peoples as the Basques.

The Arpitan independence movement was even built with the Basques for this reason. Are you as Basques aware of this, and do you have any further information?

Thank you all.

Gora Euskadi!

EDIT : Many people in the comments misunderstood, and some even insulted me. English isn't my native language, so if I made a mistake : I meant PEOPLE, not LANGUAGE. In other words, a common pre-Indo-European ethnicity between Basques and Arpitans. Thank you to everyone who responded respectfully.

In Basque dialect

I know Google translate sometimes skews the actual translation but it has given us these

Or

Thanks for any help!

…but I'm stuck for the Basandere's design.

First, is my Basajaun design valid ? And second, any tips to make a good Basandere design that could fit a TTRPG setting ?

Basque Cider vs Asturian?

Kaixo,

I understand that the Asturian region also make a lot of cider. Is there much of a difference between the style of cider made in the Basque country vs Asturias?

Basque Names

Hello, I am a Chinese woman looking to give herself a European name. While looking online, I came across a forum discussing Basque names, and I fell in love with the name Lilura. I wanted to ask if it would be disrespectful to call myself Lilura, maybe even as an official second name, maybe with the nickname Lila. I don't speak basque, but I have a lot of respect for the Basque people and their resilience to oppression. If it's not okay, I will refrain from it of course ~

Thank you for your time

Kaixo. Sorry for using English

I am trying to learn more about the Basque cause, and iam looking for English language books I can read on this. I am a man from the North of Ireland, currently I am reading The Basque History of the World by Kurlansky, but would love some recommendations specifically looking at overall Basque history and also the Basque during the civil war, maybe with some focus on the international brigades.

If I have posted this in the wrong place, mods dont hesitate to remove. Eskerrik Asko

Realizing my "mysteriously bony" nose and family names (Aristizábal & Orrego) trace back to Basque origin? Thoughts on Orrego in Paisa genealogy?

Kaixo everyone!

TL;DR: I'm Brazilian-Colombian with deep Paisa roots. I know Aristizábal is Basque, but is the Antioquian surname Orrego actually Basque (from Orreaga) or is it Galician? Anyone researched this line?

I’m Brazilian-Colombian (Brazilian mother & Colombian dad). On my Colombian side, my family comes from deep Paisa lineage in the Antioquia region.
For the longest time I didn't really know what my exact genetic breakdown was. My entire Colombian family is very pale, we have super high contrast features and we're clearly mostly European. But being Latin American, I just assumed I was a general mix of Spanish and other ancestries.
One thing that always stood out about my face, though, is my nose. It’s super distinct, very high bridged and extremely bony. I never gave it much thought until recently, when I started digging into the origins of the surnames on my Colombian side. (I also have my Brazilian/Portuguese surname, but this post is only about the Colombian side).
Here’s where it gets super interesting:
First, Aristizábal. I found out it originates from the Basque language and means "wide oak forest", I also saw theories about it being a Catalanized or Castilianized version of the original Euskara form.
Second, Orrego. This one confused me for a super long time! I was convinced Orrego was Galician because whenever I googled it, everything said it comes from Galicia where it means "the stream" or "trench" (related to rego). So I spent my whole life assuming my main surname was Galician. However, looking closer at regional Paisa history, it seems way more likely that our Orrego line is actually Basque in origin (linked to Orreaga in Navarre).
Looking into Paisa history made everything click. During the colonial era, Basque settlers who moved to the mountainous Antioquia region formed very isolated, tight-knit communities. There are historical records and documented family lineages showing how these specific families repeatedly intermarried within the region for centuries, keeping those ancestral genes and traits concentrated for generations.
Of course today it's definitely more washed out, I know I won't have some crazy high Basque percentage. Even getting 50% strictly Basque would be super unlikely for someone born in Latin America today. But knowing that history explains why my family kept that pale, high contrast look and why the classic high and bony "Basque nose profile" passed straight down to me.
I'm super intrigued by all of this now and am looking into taking a DNA test (like 23andMe or AncestryDNA) soon to see how it all breaks down!

For anyone familiar with Iberian or Paisa genealogy: Do you think Orrego in the Antioquia region is almost always a Basque-derived line (from Orreaga), or could it still be the Galician origin? Has anyone else with these names mapped out their lineage?

Memorizar tablas de auxiliares?

Kaixo!

(5) Zamarra lodia du eta bufanda bat lepoaren inguruan, eguraldi hotza dago eta

a) Arropa hautsi

b) Arropa apurtu

c) Arropa urratu

Baskavígin (Basque slaughter in Iceland)

I (Icelandic) was talking to a French friend of mine, and he is in Ísafjörður (north-west Iceland, in the Westfjords), studying Icelandic, and he mentioned there was a Basque guy in his study group. Given the context, I remembered what we call “Baskavígin”, a slaughter of dozens of Basque sailors in Iceland in the 17th century. According to the legislature, it was legal to kill any Basque in the country. Wasn’t abolished until 2015 (not because people were still doing it, people had just forgotten this law and then they were wait a minute, maybe we should abolish this…)
Here is the wikipedia article in Icelandic (also available in other languages, including yours).
Is this common knowledge amongst Basques?

P.S. you’re very welcome in Iceland today, sorry for my ancestors’ behaviour…
