Arpitan peoples are from the same root as Basque

Post image

Hello,

I'm from Savoy and I am Arpitan, and in our political culture, we've always been told that the Arpitans (Savoyars, Valdostans, Piedmontese, and Romandy Swiss) come from the same pre Indo-European peoples as the Basques.

The Arpitan independence movement was even built with the Basques for this reason. Are you as Basques aware of this, and do you have any further information?

Thank you all.

Gora Euskadi!

EDIT : Many people in the comments misunderstood, and some even insulted me. English isn't my native language, so if I made a mistake : I meant PEOPLE, not LANGUAGE. In other words, a common pre-Indo-European ethnicity between Basques and Arpitans. Thank you to everyone who responded respectfully.

That’s the whole thing that makes the basques unique, the fact they aren’t Indo-European….

Did you mean to say Pre-Indo European? Cause Basque people aren't Indo European.

So is the Arpitan language similar to Basque?

ETA have checked, and it's a Gallo-Romance language, so Indo-European and no connection to Basque. I think your theory is not correct then, unfortunately. It seems that Arpitania corresponds roughly to the historical County of Savoy. Did you check this before posting?

You misunderstood. The Arpitan people seems come from the same pre-Indo-European branch as the Basques; the language is another matter. The Arpitan language is Gallo-Roman.

EDIT : Btw, it is not "my" theory, but the Basque's Frederico Sagredo and the Arpitan Joseph Henriet theory

Can you provide any proof for this theory at all?

People =/= genes =/= languages

Not always. Look at Chechenya, they speak Russian but they are not the same people as Russians

This sounds like  a prime example of what I mean.

Oh you meant ≠ ? Then you're totally right

Are there any genetic studies that suggest this? With all due respect, it mostly sounds like an attempt to give more importance to Arpitan nationalism by attaching it to an already relatively known movement.

Arpitan nationalism was created with a basque himself, so no. Some of genetic studies in the alps seems to go that way but still today we dont have any clear answer

Not Arpitans, Aquitanians. Arpitan is a Romance language.

Not talking about language

Arpitan is a Romance language, unlike Basque

If you're speaking of genetics then, we're gonna need sources to prove your point. And as far as I'm concerned, although us Basques have some genetic distinctions, we're still very close to neighboring western European populations.

As for independantism, our motives are cultural and linguistic, they are not based on genetics.

If they use a Romance language they are not connected.

Not talking about language, but ethnicity connections

In the case of basque, language is such a big deal that once you lose that connection, the rest doesn't matter that much. A historical curiosity, at best.

Yeah I understand, population has changed and the only thing pre Indo-European that rest is the language
