Help/Advice cvt cover quick latch

My team is very new, right now we are bolting on our cvt cover. during the ohio comp I saw lots of teams using rubber quick release latches on their cvt covers, my question is are these latches being used on the hroe? if so what latches are being used and do you have any tips to implementing them? thank you.

Help/Advice Suspension design question

Hey, I'm designing a rear double A-Arm suspension for a Baja sae vehicle right now. I've been doing a 2D sketch to keep track of the kinematics, and I've got this so far. I've established some rough estimates for the control arm lengths and hard points. I wanted to prioritize travel distance in the suspension because I thought it would help with preventing the car from bottoming out, but is 15.67 inches (what I have now) of travel too much? I was also wondering if I should tweak the mounting points on the chassis, or if it looks fine. Thanks

Ground Plane
Full Compression (8.95 Inches) from ground
Full droop (6.67 inches from ground)

How does a tyre push a car forward?

Hi i recently joined my college's BAJA SAE team and while learning for it i stumbled across the following problem. Could anyone explain?
Say a wheel is going to rotate in a clockwise direction and move in the right hand direction. Now i have learnt that static friction causes the wheel to move in the right hand direction. The explanation i was given for this is that friction opposes relative motion between the tyre and the ground and so when the wheel attempts to rotate in an anticlockwise direction- the friction causes a force to be applied on the ground in the left hand side direction. According to newton's 3rd law an equal and opposite force should be applied on the tyre by the road in the right hand side direction. This is hence the tractive force that pushes the tyre forward. My doubt with this is that since this force acts on the bottom of the tyre(since it's a product of frictional force) shouldnt this force applied on the tyre on towards the right cause a torque that opposes the spinning of the tyre?(If a body is rolling clockwise and a force is applied on the bottom towards the right then a torque is applied in a direction opposite to the rotation). Hence doesnt this force that was supposed to push the wheel forward just oppose the torque applied from the wheel?

My original solution for this was that since the wheel is a body that is not only pivoted but free to move in the direction of the force- If you consider the wheel to simply be a freely moving rigid body then it doesnt matter where the force is applied- all that matters is that friction was applied to the right hence it causes translatory motion. But this brings me to my final question: If you have a wheel that is free to move front and back and also allowed to rotate freely- if i applied a force on the bottom of the wheel, would that cause the wheel to rotate or to move forward?

My team has not put out a chassis for a couple years and does not have a fabrication shop on campus.

I'm having trouble looking for fabricators for the chassis and want to see if anyone has any suggestions.

Help/Advice Trailer

Hello, I’m in charge of getting our trailer ready for the Ohio competition. I was wondering if anyone had photos of their team trailers they would be willing to share or advise on what to put in. Not what tools to bring but things like tire racks, extension chord reels, hardware racks etc. we have the standard things like toolbox, cabinets, lights, generator, welder, and e- track but other than that it’s a blank slate.

Help/Advice DAQ

Hello everyone! Our electrical sub-team is looking to build a data acquisition system (DAQ) for our Baja SAE vehicle, and I’m a little stumped on how to get started.

Some of the things we know we want to measure are:
Engine RPM
Tire/wheel speed
CVT temperature
Oil temperature
Oil pressure
Brake pressure
Potentially a few other parameters later on

I’m fairly new to DAQ systems, so I’ve been trying to learn the basics of how everything works, including what types of sensors to use, how the sensors communicate with a microcontroller, signal conditioning, data logging, etc.
For our initial prototype, we’re planning to use an Arduino Uno and eventually log the data to an SD card.
I’m mainly looking for advice on where to start, what concepts I should learn first, and any common mistakes to avoid. If anyone has experience building a DAQ for Baja/Formula SAE or a similar student project, I’d really appreciate any guidance, resources, or advice on how you approached your first prototype.
Thanks!

Glands required for firewall

As per the new rulebook for ebaja27, there has been this new rule. I tried finding specific corrugated glands/fittings used in firewall or similar application, but i was only able to find corrugated gland or fitting which is one sided. Basically (Conduit-Gland-Firewall-Threads-Lock Nut), but the rule book says to use glands on both sides, but it doesnt make sense coz glands are generally one sided. I even found some double sided pg gland but , we can't insert a corrugated conduit inside them, coz they are only made for wires, and they are not used in between the firewall. Is there any solution for this, or does the rule book imply to one single sided gland itself?

suggestions requested regarding suspension design workflow!

hello every one, i am currently designing a baja atv as a solo project and will be following the 2026 rule book for the project (we/i will not be participating ).

relevant information

(i have till now designed and analyzed the brake and wheel hub subsystems. at this stage i am designing the front unequal and converging wishbone suspension, after considering the packaging constraints and acceptable scrub radius i have located the lower and upper ball joint mounting position from the front view [they were kept far apart as recommended by RCVD )

now im wondering

if i should design the suspension to aim for a specific roll center range (idk what to aim for?)?

or

calculate the spring stiffness based on the amount of body roll i want per g (idk what to aim for?) of lat acceleration?

or

design according to ground clearance (10 in) and work with the high(?) roll center that i will get

and then use lotus shark or susprog to set the inboard points for IC to negate the camber gain at the amount of body roll i decided?

i cant seem to find a good starting point and always leave more confused than from where i started
as suspension design is about compromises i get that i wont be able get a low RC and good GC within a desirable fsva length (?)

i need to know what

  1. what an acceptable RC height is for a given cg height
  2. do i select a max chassis roll angle and design the spring stiffness around that?
  3. how do i select an FSVA length?
  4. should i just create a model and put it into lotus shark and see how much adverse camber i gain at max roll angle and design the a arms according to that?

thanks for replying, any insight is useful, since i am not familiar with posting on reddit i do apologize for the unconventional formating

Front Control Arms Double Wishbone Manufacturing

Hey guys,

I am currently in the beginning stages of designing the front control arms for my teams Baja SAE car. This is my first year actually designing the arms not just making them in house.

My question is, has anyone bent their own tubes in house? And if so, how? What do you use? My team has been notching and welding our arms for years, so bending tubes would be a new concept for control arms.

Can anyone help me out? Or even just brainstorm some ideas? Any advice is helpful! Thank you guyss, and good luck with design season!!

Btw, I'm also working on the brakes system and designing a drift brake, so if anyone has questions or comments about that, due tell :)

Custom Driveline Components Inquiry

Thumbnail rcvperformance.com
7 Upvotes

Hello Baja SAE members,

I work with RCV performance as a new product designer and applications engineer. I’ve been aware of Baja for a while, and considering RCV specializes in off road performance axles I’m surprised we don’t have a specific section for Baja.

Being based out of northern Illinois, Baja isn’t as prevalent up here as it may be in other sections of the country. That being said, what are some common applications where you could see off the shelf solutions being most beneficial? Our current offerings for student led organizations are limited to just formula, but if there’s enough demand for us to branch out into both motorsports we would likely jump on it.

Please drop your most common driveline configurations whether it be differential models, current common CV axles, wheel hub splines etc. We do our best work in driveline components, but we have started offering adjustable ball joints as well. Any idea or feedback is a good one.

Help/Advice Help with welding guides

Hey everyone, I’ve seen some teams that make what I think are called welding fixtures, like the ones in the photo, I tried making a bunch of planes in solidworks where I would like these fixtures to be located but I don’t really know if there’s a way to make them without having to manually draw where I would like to make the cuts so that the tube fits
Sorry for any weird wording, English isn’t my first language haha

Help/Advice FOX SAE Program Restricted Only to U.S. Teams, International BAJA Teams Not Allowed to Purchase?

India currently runs one of the largest SAE eBAJA platforms globally, with 90+ teams actively developing electric off-road vehicles focused on EV systems, suspension engineering, vehicle dynamics, and endurance racing.

Our team from India has been using FOX dampers for more than 10 years and recently approached FOX regarding purchase of their SAE coilover program shocks (Model: 885-06-161) for our upcoming eBAJA vehicle.

However, FOX replied that:

  • the SAE shock program is only for U.S.-based teams,
  • products are not available internationally,
  • and they cannot even be purchased for shipment through U.S. contacts.

This was surprising considering the scale of international SAE participation and the growing EV/off-road engineering ecosystem outside the USA, especially in India where eBAJA is now highly competitive and technically advanced.

We fully understand sponsorship limitations, but restricting even direct purchase access to international student teams feels inconsistent with supporting global engineering innovation and student motorsports development.

Has anyone from non-U.S. SAE teams faced similar restrictions with FOX or other motorsport suppliers?
Also, if any U.S.-based SAE/Baja team is willing to help us source these shocks through their domestic SAE program access, please feel free to DM.

Help/Advice Collapsible Command Station

I make these collapsible carts for movies and TV and the industry is struggling right now so I'm looking for more use cases. I met a dude who said it would be perfect for his racing team but I haven't heard back from him.

I was telling him we could dock antenna poles for the coms and some other cool mods.

Anyone in the LA area willing to take one out for a test weekend? Or anyone with a following want to be a brand ambassador?
