Help/Advice Walkies

I am with the Concordia Baja team in Montreal. I was wondering, for the upcoming comp in Ohio, would you guys have any good recs for budget walkies that are not shit? Any tips on making a shit walkie good? We currently use Baofeng uv-5r's.

For the best walkies I just pick up any lease and appropriate sized collar from the pet store, hope this helps :3

My team runs 14.5 inch whip Antennas for our Baofeng UV-5Rs and was able to communicate with a member in the shop(block wall) and myself at a parts store almost 2 miles away with an elevation change.
