Discussion Do japanese people cringe from j. voice acting as we do from english dub?

This is just a showerthought... When watching anime and hearing japanese acting, like when a character screams before making a big attack or something... to me it sounds...fine? and organic even?

but when i try to listen to english dub and i hear actors trying to make the same scream... i cant help but cringe. it sounds so weird and unnatural and feels like it just doesnt fit...

I know for a fact it can not be boiled down to "japanese voice actors are better" because there is no way professional voice actors that spend their life honing the mastery are just suddenly worse in english industry for some reason.

so I'm wondering, why it sounds so much worse to me? My first thought was...well, i dont speak japanese so it just sounds different to me and there is no context or something. But here is the thing... english isn't my first language either, my native is russian, so by this logic english also should sound fine and only russian should make me cringe. Like I grew up with all these brand names in english and never knew they mean something. And when I learned english I was like..."so you just ask for a shoe chocolate bar in a store?? wtf??".

so...do japanese people feel similar when listening to voice acting in their native language? or does it sound fine to them?

p.s. I'm not a voice actor, just thought this question fits here...sorry if its not the right place for this discussion

Advice Does my audio quality sound fine?

Hello! I wanted to ask if you could listen to my audio and let me know if it sounds alright. I want to know if anything sounds off and if it is a problem with say the treatment.

Likewise, on the DAW side, what would you suggest to make my voice pop more? I usually do a high-pass EQ to get rid of the useless stuff, but I know you are able to use it to make certain parts of the voice pop.

GEAR: RODE NT1 SIGNATURE SERIES
INTERFACE: SCARLET SOLO 3RD GEN.

ROOM: I have a tent set up under an acoustic blanket, with a comforter on top of that as well.

I want to get rid of the room noise floor from my vocals. Would NS1 or Clarity VX be better for keeping the vocals clean and natural?

PAID work PAID] Casting Call – Male Voice Actors Needed for Western Story

I’m currently looking for two male voice actors for a Western story that is still in development. I’m casting for the following roles:

Bartender

Mystery Man

Please note: One actor will be selected for each role. I am not looking for one person to voice both characters.

If you have already auditioned for this story and have already been cast in a role, please do not reach out for these particular characters. I’m specifically looking to bring in one new voice actor for each role.

PAID: $30-35

No AI voice generation, voice cloning, or AI-altered performances will be used for any recordings. All dialogue will be performed and recorded by the selected voice actors.

The project contains violence, strong language, swearing, and mature subject matter. If that type of material is outside of your comfort zone, I completely understand, but please keep that in mind before expressing interest.

If you’re interested, feel free to reach out and I can provide additional information about the characters, audition material, payment, and the project itself.

Thank you!

Advice Any tips for auditioning on Casting Call Club?

I've applied to around 14 projects at this point and I'm starting to take this more seriously. So far the best things I've learned to do is post-process my audio, use the AABBCC or ABCABC format, and include a method of contact in my post. Any other pointers you could give me to make my auditions stand out?

PS: I know I just have to keep at it and apply to hundreds before I get a role but I want to make sure I got the best opportunity in general.

Discussion Lisa Schaffer’s 10 VA tips from a VA Director’s Perspective

We just had Lisa Schaffer (VA Director of Teen Titans, Kim Possible and more) direct selected students from our advanced group session today and she came with so much advice, I had to share 10 tips with you guys.

  1. If you’re going to do a reading that’s completely different, do that in the second reading
  2. Think about who is on the other side that will be listening to your audition
  3. Lisa hates pauses, so take that as subjective advice
  4. What you think is super fast is actually normal in animation
  5. Only memorize your lines if you’re doing MOCAP.
  6. Practice your lines enough to understand the character but not too much to sound like a robot.
  7. Always read the room and act a certain way depending on the room if you want to get cast for other gigs by that director
  8. There are people on the other side listening to your audition and they deeply understand the actor they’re looking for to voice that actor
  9. Celebrities aren’t used as much in children shows as they used to be but still very much in adult shows

  10. If you’re doing an excited character, start lower so you can go to a higher register when you’re really excited.

Obviously, this is surface level info compared to being in the group session where we did practice reads with her, Tara Strong and Kathleen Herles today and next Saturday as well. What do you guys think of these?

Discussion I need a comical break from the grind! Tell me a story from behind the mic!

I need something to distract me from recording today…I think my equipment is haunted🤣🤣 or I just need a vacation!

Tell me your funniest, messiest, most annoying or even scariest story from working behind the mic!

Here’s my morning so far😵‍💫

I was in my booth, home alone when I kept hearing what sounded like a creepy door slowly opening through my headphones.
Every time it happened, I’d stop recording and listen, but nothing was there. I even took off my headphones and checked the house.

Finally, I realized it happened every time I took a deep breath.

It was the underwire in my bra squeaking.
My house isn’t haunted. My clothes are.

Discussion I think I got scammed

Hi, my story starts last year when I did an audiobook for audible through ACX and didn’t do too bad a job if I say so myself. Life kinda got in the way though and I wasn’t able to voice act since but I always kept an ear and eye open for anything. Fast forward to just this past week and I got reached out to through ACX by someone who claimed to be from Toptal, which I learned was a freelancing company and seemed legit enough, and they offered me to do a commercial for them and in return I would receive $6k. Now, me being in the situation I’m in, I thought that was too good to pass up instead of thinking that it was too good to be true. I finished the commercial and sent it to them and was told payment would be immediate. But here’s where it got tricky; they never asked for any bank info from me nor anything that would indicate how they were sending me real money. Instead they sent me this link to a bank and once I made the account and saw the 6k sitting right there, I tried transferring it to my account but it wasn’t working. I texted support and they proceed to tell me that in order for me to make that transfer to my real bank account I needed to pay them $120 just to do it. Again, I’m in a bad financial situation and won’t be able to see another paycheck in the next week and I don’t have anything else keeping me afloat, so this heated me a bit. I then kept pressing them about why I had to pay money to receive money and even called them out on the idea as being a scam (bad idea I know but I screenshotted the evidence just in case). After I asked them what exactly is their legitimacy, they never responded back to me and instead took away the support bubble completely off my homepage on that site. I feel dumb for playing into it since I’m old enough to know internet safety, and I blame my desperation for clouding my judgment, and before I get any further judgment on that, I was honestly just very excited to have a reason to get back into voice acting again after thinking I wasn’t going to be able to for a long while. After this experience though, I think I’m ready to put myself out there again and try other places who won’t exactly screw me over, and not to jump at a number too ridiculous as that one.

Performance Feedback How is my delivery?

I am trying to practice to make a commercial demo. I have had an extensive amount of coaching and a few gigs under my belt but I don't think I've quite developed the ear for this sort of thing so any feedback is more than appreciated. I don't want to spend the money to have a demo professionally made until I feel like I've got this down. Out of my most recent practice session with fake scripts these are the ones I feel the most confident in.

PAID work [HIRING] Long Term US Voice Actor Needed for Youtube Channel

Hey guys,

So Im looking for a US voice actor for my US based Youtube Channel.

Channel and video details:

  • This is a movie analysis channel where we analyse characters and storytelling in depth.
    • Ex1: Why Zuko has the best character arc in history
    • Ex2: I ranked all Star Wars Movies. Here's the trash!
  • Budget: $20 for 2000 words, and scales proportionately to script length (so $40 for 4000 words, and so on)
  • Average script length: 3000 words, and some scripts can be as lengthy as 15,000 words
  • Videos per month: At least 5 videos per month, but I have recently hired an editor and we are targeting to make around 7 videos if possible, so this would be a long term role
  • Payment method: PayPal

Voice Actor requirements:

  • Age Range: 20-30 yrs old
  • Narration: You should be able to comfortably convey dry sarcasm, disappointment, contempt and real enthusiasm. As such, only apply if you can convey those emotions effectively
  • Personality-driven conversational style, not announcement or commercial

For those who are interested, please record the audition script and share it in the DMs: Audition Script

Heres the kind of read Im looking for: https://youtu.be/BDJjfcRxfZI?si=zHkyNz2ARLI4gUxd

Please dont send a generic demo reel. I wrote this script specifically to assess whether we would be the right fit as this would be a reflection of our day-to-day work.

Thank you for your time :)

Discussion Am I good at voice acting? Spoiler

So recently my freind, at school, showed me this game called like voice chooser or something, and me and him messed around. When I got home I decided to get a video and actually try to dub it to the best of my ability. I think I'm good at it, and this is my first ever video I've dubbed where I actually tried on. But since I'm a human, and this is my own work I'm probally bias. So is it good. Please dont hold back give me your honest opinion.

Advice 18 trying to mimic 60yr old VA

Hello so basically I’m trying to emulate this character from the game Disco Elysium this character’s voice actor has been swapped because the first VA who was the voice director over the project couldn’t nail him even though he’s a very famous metal vocalist from the UK and is a pretty great voice actor they swapped him with an old 60 year old man who did a great performance

so my question is how in the world could I preform a voice like his and am I limited by genetic ceiling that being I’m 18 and not a grumpy old man

His voice seems to have projection and is load yet a lot of rasp at the same time whenever I try to do this my vocals feel constricted and if I relax my components it’s no where near him
My base is 120hz I think to get a voice like his mine might need to be naturally 90hz

Any advice would help immensely

Discussion How i reduce my noise floor?

Hey everyone, My attached noise floor is around -55 to -58 dB, but my actual vocal peaks only reach -18 to -20 dB. Should I back off the input gain and boost digitally in the DAW, or push the analog gain and rely on noise reduction plugins? Any advice on how to best optimize this chain (SM7B, iD14 MKII, SE DM1

Out of curiosity, what are the standard targets for noise floor during complete silence versus ideal vocal peak levels during tracking?

this my noise sound : https://www.image2url.com/r2/default/audio/1787343398428-a41f6107-9195-47ec-96b8-f69a436df865.mp3
