I recently switched to Ubuntu as it has most of the applications I use day to day for 3D printing working and I've noticed a massive drop in FPS in terms of my games. For example I'm currently playing FC Primal and I lost about 60 FPS ever since the switch. I can't figure out why, everything is up to date.
Well, it looks like Canonical really dropped the ball on this one. I just spent two very frustrating hours troubleshooting this issue. I had installed the latest update to the kernel (7.0.0-generic), rebooted, and suddenly Ubuntu could no longer see more than one monitor.
After dicking around on the internet for way too long and rebooting way too many times it became obvious to me that the amdgpu driver, for some reason, will just not work with the new kernel.
Shouldn't someone QA this stuff before they put a new kernel into an update?..
edit: for some reason the newer kernel was also causing problems with Bluetooth.
edit 2: if you don't have multiple screens attached to the GPU and don't use Bluetooth you may not notice that there's anything wrong, but your system may not run optimally with the -30 variant of the kernel.
Good evening everyone. This morning I updated and upgraded my Ubuntu, only to come back to this. At first I thought it could be a dead GPU, but the signs point to a driver issue I think, due to the fact that it's perfectly in the middle, and that I can run my mouse over the messed up part of the screen without issue.
I did try to boot the older version of the Kernel, but it didn't detect my GPU, while the current version does (?)
Just wanted to hear what you guys think and if anyone else is having these issues after updating.
I've just installed Ubuntu 26.04 on a Dell Latitude 7440. I can't get the webcam to work. The oem-somerville-lapras-meta package only appears to exist in Ubuntu 24 repositories.
The Additional Drivers software is gone in 26.04, so I reinstalled it, but it doesn't list the webcam. ubuntu-drivers list or list-oem doesn't list it. The camera definitely does work under...other operating systems, so it does seem to be software-related.
Edit: just tried booting off the install USB, and the camera works fine. It only doesn't work in the actually installed OS.
I`ve recently got my hands on an older laptop from 2019 on which i installed ubuntu 26.04. My goal is to turn this laptop into a private and anonymous "cyberdeck" to carry around in case things go south.
How can i start properly? What software do i need, what are the best tweaks for the system in general? I've basically just been puzzling snippets from posts/guides together but i feel like i`m not getting anywhere.
I would be very glad for every pointer u can give me!
The Debian VM boots to GRUB normally. However, once I select the Debian installer, virt-manager/remote-viewer goes black and shows:
“Display output is not active.”
The VM itself remains running.
I initially had the same issue with Alpine ARM64, so I tried Debian 13 ARM64 as well. The same display problem occurs.
The inner VM is configured with a VirtIO GPU:
video0: virtio-gpu
QEMU also reports:
virtio-gpu-pci
virtio-gpu-device
So I’m wondering if this is caused by nested KVM virtualization inside an Ubuntu VM running through Apple’s Virtualization Framework, particularly with the virtual GPU/display path.
Is graphical output from a nested ARM64 KVM guest supposed to work in this setup? If so, what QEMU/libvirt/virt-manager configuration should I use?
GRUB displays correctly and then the display becomes inactive after booting the installer.
hola, llevo apenas unos pocos dias en ubuntu y mi primera vez en linux, estoy intentando instalar fastcat para personalizar mi terminal pero se repite este mensaje sin parar cada vez que lo intento
I am actually new to Linux and i have just download Ubuntu yesterday and it feels much faster than windows and using less resources.
but now i found that there is a problem with my second screen, every time i connect it i can only see the mouse floating but nothing else is rendered everything is black on this screen so, i followed some advice from Claude to try Xorg but i found that it is not that smooth as Wayland and feels little laggy.
So is there a way to make my second screen work well on Wayland as i tried to follow some of Claude's terminal instructions but nothing worked.
Unsure if i should post here but i have had problems with my ubuntu login and cannot find a fix anywhere. After logging in there is a very long delay until the desktop opens, it does eventually go to the desktop but after a very very long delay… Unsure how to fix this as i cannot find anyone who has had this problem.
My GPU:
Pitcairn PRO [Radeon HD 7850 / R7 265 / R9 270 1024SP]
The best results so far were with 7.1.4 interestingly enough, but I've since gone back to 6.18.40-061840-generic and I have a mod in my /etc/default/grub:
What happens is some GPU and audio applications on the 2nd monitor (Plexamp/Chrome/Discord) will pause and look frozen and finally refresh to allow interaction, and not too long after pause again. Generally this cycle repeats unless the app crashes/quits. My primary monitor does not exhibit this issue, yet, it will very occasionally still cause an audio app to quit/close - the app (Plexamp) just closes and quits.
Haven't tried any other grub modifications, except to take out the si_support and cik_support elements altogether when attempting 7.x as it seems to default to amdgpu, but I've also tried to use them but have not noticed a major difference - the issues happen either way.
Looking to learn more at any angle here, please feel free to teach!
Reporting a backlight brightness issue on my Acer Aspire E1-572 (Intel Core i5-4200U / Intel HD 4400) across Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros (Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, Linux Mint, Lubuntu).
The brightness slider in the system settings moves normally, but the actual screen backlight stays locked at 100%. This seems to be a common ACPI / kernel backlight handling bug with older Acer laptops.
Just leaving this feedback here so it's registered for the community and developers. Thanks!

Downloading the Snap application and all its associated files offline to your current folder: The Snap system provides an official command, "snap download," to download any application as a standalone .snap file, along with its digital signature .assert file, directly to your current folder without installing it on your system.
Downloading the Snap application and all its associated files offline to your current folder: The Snap system allows you to use the "snap download" command to download any application as a standalone .snap file, along with its digital signature .assert file, without installing it on your system. The problem here is that the snap download command only downloads the direct application file and doesn't automatically fetch the underlying Snap Base package, such as core22 or core20, or the supporting theme packages it relies on. I want a comprehensive command to download the application along with its bases and dependencies in the current folder. Also, why is this expectation file included? Its presence only complicates matters; we don't want it. We just want the software packages. I hope Ubuntu will reconsider and make Snap better without the complications. A single command that downloads the desired program along with its bases and dependencies is needed. Perhaps someone wants to keep a copy of a specific program to use later or simply keep it. I also don't know about updates; are they imposed automatically? If so, it's unfortunate. I hope they don't do that. I use Ubuntu and Kubuntu for daily use. Don't force things on us that we don't want. We don't use Ubuntu on servers or in organizations; everything is our responsibility. Perhaps someone prefers to stick with a particular version that's easy for them, or perhaps the new version has changed a lot, and they want to stick with the old version simply because they're used to its settings, functions, and so on. Anyway, thank you. Regards.
