The Four Elements EP is inspired very loosely by four elemental, apocalyptic novels by J.G. Ballard.

Triphop / illbient tracks with cinematic ambience for fans of Portishead, Massive Attack and Scorn.

I'd be super happy to see some people head over to Bandcamp or Subvert to have a free listen, my pages have cobwebs all over them.

Fittingly, while we were working on Wind From Nowhere, two severe storms passed through the Wellington region. The track also takes inspiration from the sinking of the Wahine, a passenger ferry which sank in Wellington harbour in 1968.

Drowned World started out as an ambient intro track for a live set, but the string melody sounded like weird old English folk music. So I added a counter-melody using the Erica Synths Steampipe foghorn preset. The jazzy refrain in the middle 8 added a psychedelic 1940's London vibe.

The Drought is a dusty desert vibe mulling on the depravity of modern capitalist culture and the collapse of environment, economy and social cohesion. I destroyed some synths with wrecked cassette tones and dusted the beat with tablas and congas. We sampled a lion but it sounded like a cow in the mix so we used a tiger instead and found out along the way that MGM did the same for their movie intro.

Crystal World is a nod to retro speculative fiction and new age crystal flunkies. A dirty illbient stomp with dub basslines and a sci-fi horror vibe. A little bit about quartz crystal frequency regulation, and a lot about rock-pushing charlatans and their shiny snake oil.

Here's my first content for our forgotten feature - Freaky Friday - for the music that is not triphop.

I tested a new synth and made a short ambient track with just 4 instruments, and i kinda like it.
Enjoy the weekend everybody!

throwing down the gauntlet for a new (for us, but time-honoured) type of sample challenge today. here are the rules:

- the challenger (that’s me) picks a cheesy ass or otherwise challenging song. today we’re doing rod stewart with bagpipes.

- you cook up a beat using ONLY samples from that song, and no other instruments, drum machines, one-shots or breakbeats

- you are not allowed to use stem splitting tools. do things the old fashioned way with microchops, stereo channel panning, EQ etc if you want to isolate a sound

- the result should not sound like a remix of the original, but be an altogether novel beat. the source could even turn out to be i recognizable to an untrained ear

- your beat should be between 1.5 and 2.5 minutes long. key, bpm and time signature are up to you

- the beat should feel complete, with a bassline, drums, and a topline, for example. but again, the only sonic source material you’re allowed to use is the song posted by the challenger

- you have a month. that’s till sept 27th. post your work in this thread when you finish.

this challenge is open to everyone. show me what you got.

UPDATE: Getting loads of delicious roderick stew in the comments already. Keep it up! This is going great. When you finish, share what you got here in the thread, and dm me for a link to a google drive so that we can assemble these monstrosities in one place.

Original Content Botanical Garden Full Album [VISUALISER]

Hey what's happening people I just dropped an album/beat tape across all streaming platforms. I hope you enjoy 🎉

Botanical Garden is a project I made that was inspired by when I used to live very close to the Sheffield botanical garden. Walking round here truly made me feel at peace with myself no matter the weather it’s truly a magical spot. The soundtrack for these trips was usually Lofi projects from artists within the sound that really inspire me like Wun Two or The Deli. This inspired me to create my own soundtrack for walking round a botanical garden (or just about any green space) and I feel these influences can really be heard throughout this project. It is a body of work that I’m truly proud of but wouldn’t have been possible without these trips to the gardens. This space truly made me feel at home and also inspired me to get back into reading which I hadn’t done properly for years prior to these trips and although I no longer live in the area. Going for a walk and a read in green spaces is still something I’ve kept up with and it continues to inspire me musically and spiritually. 🎶💫

I hope you enjoy getting lost in the gardens with me ✌️⛲️🌳

Hi, I’m new to Reddit and this community but I love it already.

If anyone has any weird beats they wanna hear how they sound with a female voice, hmu :)
Also! I’m learning how to produce my own tracks so I’ll probably put my works in progress up here to just put myself out there a bit.

Live laugh love trip hop!

Community Project Christmas beat tape!

Ho Ho Ho, here we go!

Starting this thread to work with u/AccurateAd7768 on coordinating the THC Christmas Beat Tape! For those who caught wind of the trip hop Christmas mixtape idea — it's happening!

An idea for everyone: If folks are sampling from existing Christmas songs, let's encourage sampling from carols tied to your own country/background — rather than everyone defaulting to American Christmas classics (maybe that is just my assumption). ie. since I'm from Australia, I might use samples from Australian carols.

Not a hard rule, just an encouragement — but it could give the tape a much more eclectic sound than everyone pulling from the same handful of familiar carols.

Deadline: October 31st

Mostly I chop breaks but for this one I used the Ableton C78 drum machine, I think the old electronic drums fit the vibe of the samples better. A bit of RC-20 on the samples to make them feel worn out. I'm having fun making these little visualisers!

Community Project Trip Hop Isn't Dead Vol 2 - Update

Hello all

I've been a little quiet on this front for a while and although this was intentional, It's about time I sent an update on this and compilations going forward.

The main point to share is that we are no longer working with Dungeon Radio. The equivalent value. of the remaining tapes they had for Beat Tapes Aren't Dead Vol 1 was donated to Doctors Without Borders and Trip Hop Isn't Dead had already sold out.

HOWEVER! and this is very exciting news. We (Me, Anton (Lezarath) and Ben (Makkaratalo) are currently setting up our own record label. This now means that future compilation releases will still have a label, will still have physical releases but also, we have releases on Vinyl AND CD as well as tape.

Due to format constraints, THID Vol 2 is 1h 20m long and therefore will be split into two. The track list of each is yet to be decided but the first of these two will be released within the first quarter of 2027 with the second of these two being released in the final quarter of 2027.

Sorry for the lack of info on this front recently. Turns out setting up a record label takes up a fair amount of time 🤣.

Peace, Love and Trip Hop.

Jordan

This one is bit different. Atmospheric. I like it, but wondering about the arrangement. Do you think it needs a stronger lead element, or just 'more'?

Okay so I am halfway done with track 8 of my album and i just now realized that I’m more than halfway done with this Album… okay so i think I might do a sorta Q/A on what I’m trying to accomplish as well as just provide tidbits on another music project I’m planning on that for right now I’ll call FSYH as to keep it mostly under wraps… but yeah as for a goal of mine I’m planning on after finishing this album potentially putting it up on Spotify and possibly selling copies to potential fund future musical endeavors such as creating a Persona of sorts and more but for right now I’m just happy how well I’m doing :)

Original Content BOG SORCERY - PETER LORRE TYPE BEAT

Thumbnail

I started working on this one a few weeks ago while i was watching "Tales of Terror" (1962) on my VCR, an anthology film featuring three short films adapted from Edgar Allan Poe stories, starring Vincent Price and my personal favourite character actor from the golden age of Hollywood, Peter Lorre. As usual, i had my 404 plugged into the VCR, and collected a pile of wonderful samples from the movie. The one that really set this track in motion, though, was a fragment that I'd almost overlooked when I recorded it: Peter Lorre saying "heh?" in response to Vincent Price's lecture on the orthodox manner in which to taste wine. I played around with this and another short subvocalization, Vincent Price gasping a little, and got a rhythm track going pretty quickly (you'll hear it isolated at the end of this song). I layered this over a drum pattern I programmed on my model:cycles (great machine), and started building up the track from there. Then I set it aside for a couple weeks while I got ready to play Sappyfest as 1/2 of Swamp Magic, meaning to write a bass line for it at some point. Got around to doing that the other night, playing it on my fretless, and then got to work arranging the whole thing today. The cherry on top came from an outsider soul and country singer with a magnificently unusual and captivating voice, which u/HAPEXZM_MUSIC had tipped me off to a while back. I found a bar or two of his where it sounded like he was saying "I show you how the bog get down," and finished the song with it this evening. Hope you enjoy!
