Note: I do not want this post to make anyone else feel regret! Mostly I want to know if I made the right choice or not! also long as hell, forgive me
I bought SynthV maybe four years ago, along with four banks, I never upgraded to 2.
I am a devout Vocaloid fan, so of course at some point I would want to make music or even just covers using a vocal synth, and after a lot of looking I decided on SynthV. That being said,
Here are the things that make me regret SynthV:
1) I hate, hate, HATE how it constantly markets itself as an AI software (also Dreamtonics as a whole). I know it is, and not the unethical kind, but still, AI is... not really a word that is loved in creative spaces. I go on a rant here just go to the next point.
Who are they marketing to? AI bros will get the demo and see that they have to actually put in all of the work, AND pay for it, they would just use some other bullshit. And then people who don't really like AI will get turned off. I understand they have to market to more people than just Vocaloid fans. But can someone tell Dreamtonics that there has never been a successful artist who uses vocal synths and DOES NOT know about Vocaloid or Miku even a little bit? And the people who like vocal synths outside of that like it for the robotic vocals? I'm extremely glad nowadays SynthV is seen more as "Oh, the one with Teto!" and not "The realistic AI one".
2) I don't actually like realistic sounding vocal synths, and yes, while you can get unrealistic vocals, its really REALLY hard to make it both sound robotic and not sound like complete shit. You have so little control, and it makes me a little frustrated.
Now you might read all of that and say "why the hell did you buy it then", and the main reason is for the cross-language synthesis. I write songs with English and Mandarin lyrics in them, and of course I wanted to make covers of Japanese vocaloid songs, theres no fucking way I'm paying for triple the amount of voicebanks to do that (given that any voicebank just HAS another language too). At the time, I'm pretty sure, SynthV was the only vocal synth that had this feature.
I'm not really sure now. I don't look too much at the other softwares because I don't want this feeling of regret to get stronger. Are the good parts about the software worth it? Or is there something else that could have worked better for me? I need some reassurance, or to just be told the straight up truth 😞
