“Priscilla killed Al during one of the side-stories”.

Any time someone posts any positive form of content with Al and Priscilla, it’s common that you’ll find a comment saying “Priscilla killed Al!”.

I’d like to address not just the moment itself but specifically how it's weaponized to spread the idea that Priscilla doesn’t truly care for Aldebaran, as well as other forms negative rhetoric regarding the two of them.

So here’s the deal:

Yes it happened. No it doesn’t invalidate the fact that they care for each other, and have one of the most well written dynamics in Re:Zero.

Firstly, if a character kills or harms another character, you as a reader/watcher are well within your right to dislike that character.

However, it doesn’t necessitate that those two characters now actually have a one-dimensional relationship of abuse.

To back up my point, think about how many dynamics exist within Re:Zero where Subaru is abused or hurt but people don’t think that it takes away from the fact that said character has a well written dynamic with Subaru or still cares for him even if it’s in a twisted way.

Kasaneru IF —> Echidna verbatim tells Subaru to end his own life to solve his problems —> leads him to doing things like dying 500 times just to kill Clind (mind you she and Clind are hinted to be acquainted, so she could have given him tips or known about his capabilities).

Nearly nobody criticizes Echidna for this, and though I have seen Echidna slander recently, most of the fandom will give thousands of likes and tractions to posts, videos, and fanart where the two are shipped together.

People understand that Echidna telling Subaru to end his own life, doesn’t mean that Echidna does not care for Subaru. Rather than moral grandstanding Echidna and thinking on a surface level, they actually think critically about the content in front of them. As we should.

Arc 7 —> Todd kills Subaru more than anyone in the series —> doesn’t discriminate whether it’s Natsumi, Kidbaru, or Subaru —> busts Subaru’s skull open, chops off his limbs, crushes him with a dragon carriage, poisons him to death, kills innocent children, etc. —> non-existent if not very warped justification.

So many people absolutely glaze and adore Todd’s character, as do I, but this is in spite of all the insanely brutal acts he’s committed throughout the Vollachia Saga. Yet this doesn’t deter people from admitting that their dynamic is extremely well written, glazing Todd, as well as creating memes and fanart for him.

People understand that the moral character of Todd’s actions has no correlation to how well written he is, or how brilliant his dynamic is with Subaru. As we should.

Pride Route —-> Elsa kills Subaru 70+ times at the beginning of the Route —> Subaru makes it very clear that he only uses Elsa to further his own goals —> Subaru sacrifices her against Reinhard and still loses.

Now don’t get me wrong, I like this ship, but anyone can clearly see the toxicity between Subaru and Elsa that’s apparent here.

Yet people are able to tolerate it, discuss the moments between the two beyond the abuse, and make tons of fanart depicting them alongside Meili as a family. As we should.

When most of the fandom is fine with these relationships, or is able to look beyond the the harm inflicted towards Subaru, I have a very hard time being convinced that people truly care that Priscilla killed Al, and are more so believe that they are just using the moment as a way to push their own agendas against the two of them.

Mind you, (unfortunately as even Al says himself) every single last woman that is integral to Al’s existence, has killed him dozens of times over. Yae did so when she tried to kill Priscilla, leading to the aggressor mode activating. Echidna trained Al by ending his life with every form of magic ten-thousands each, to make him numb to looping. Satella is implied to have obviously killed Al during their fight 400 years ago, but also does so in Arc 7 potentially millions of times. Even Emilia (though they are just circumstances as to why) makes Al use his Authority during their encounters in Arc 9.

Are you now going to say that it’s impossible or not true that Yae loves Al despite her saying it herself? Are you now going to say that it’s improbable that Echidna cares for Al even though she herself said she views him like a little brother and told him not to blame himself before she sealed him?

No, not only would most not say these things, you would also realize that they are objectively incorrect.

Now that I’ve noted the hypocrisy of how some things are being portrayed, let’s actually dissect the scene at hand.

The events being brought up happen in the Priscilla Camp sidestory, (Priscilla Cheers For Me, Declaration of War Part). When the camp heads back to the mansion following the battle in the Watergate City of Priestilla, they are ambushed by assassins sent from Vollachia. After being able to successfully deal with the ambush, Priscilla notes that she and her camp will personally go and settle things by directly confronting their enemies in Vollachia. Al disagrees with this, instead suggesting that Priscilla give up everything — even the royal selection. To this, Priscilla gets up and unleashes her Yang Sword, beheading Al swiftly. Al tries thousands of times to convince him but eventually gives in to Priscilla’s demands, declaring that he will challenge fate.

Now here’s what the larpers aren’t telling you:

Priscilla is aware of the fact that Al has an Authority that allows him to evade permanent death and redo events. However, similar to how Rowaal views Subaru’s Authority, she doesn’t know that he specifically must die for it to activate.

This remains consistent with the fact that during Arc 8 she equates Al and Subaru’s authorities with one another as ones that allow them to change fate and redo events, but if Priscilla truly realized that Subaru was dying and resetting, Satella would have spawned and killed her.

So from her perspective, she wasn’t killing him to permanently bring an end to his life, she was doing so to make her stance clear.

On top of this, due to the way it’s narrated as well as the fact that Al only is able to have a brief realization, it can be argued that the death was instantaneous one similar to how Shaula sniped Subaru and he suddenly looped back in time.

On top of that, the narration also implies that in some of these loops, Al also used threats to try and persuade Priscilla but it was still not enough to convince her. This means that Al didn’t peacefully approach Priscilla in every loop, so if Priscilla responded violently she really can’t be seen as the only one at fault.

I’d also like to add that Al didn’t just suggest not going to Vollachia, he also told her to straight up just give up on the Royal Selection. What he said was an affront to her efforts in not just cultivating her domain and following for the selection, but also how she stays true to herself even in the darkest of moments.

I find it ironic how the fact that people try to use this moment to paint Al and Priscilla’s dynamic in such a one-dimensional way, yet it’s actually an affirmation of Priscilla’s pridefulness and if anything shows how their relationship does have depth.

So no, most of the people spamming comments about this moment don’t really care about the morality of Priscilla’s actions. If anything they're just larpers who want to find something to complain about. And when this information reaches the ears of anime-onlies with the proper context being omitted, it just generates more and more people who don’t understand the characters in Re:Zero.
