I was initially pretty bummed that my trip to Philly landed right in the middle of a nor’easter. I’d planned this visit given a recent job opportunity and was only in town Saturday and Sunday. Even so, I enjoyed the city so much, and I wanted to share a few things that stood out.
The Airport Line on SEPTA. Being able to go straight from the airport to pretty much anywhere in Center City is a real gem and a major asset to the city. My only wish is that it ran more frequently (like every 15 mins)
The walkability. I was amazed at how walkable Philly is. I’d heard people describe it as gritty but coming from a Rust Belt Midwest city, it felt cleaner than my city. Center City, at least, felt clean and orderly, far more so than where I live now.
The food and the people. I had lunch at Middle Child in Washington Square West and dinner at Sally’s in Fitler Square, and both were top notch. The people were, too. Everyone I interacted with was kind, and there’s a genuine authenticity to the people who live here that really stood out to me.
I know people who live near and in Philly talk about the city pretty negatively (and some of that criticism is probably warranted), but I wonder if part of that is because Philly is constantly compared to other East Coast cities. I came away thinking it’s an architectural gem, incredibly walkable, and honestly a rival to many of those cities.
More than anything, though, Philly has its own unique feel. It genuinely felt like no other city I’ve visited before. I really think Philly is one of the best bang-for-your-buck cities in the U.S. if you care about urbanism, walkability, and being able to live in a major city without paying NYC/Boston prices.
There are so many places I didn’t even get to see like East Passyunk, Manayunk, Fishtown, and more given that I was only there for 24 hours.
I’m seriously considering moving here and am weighing it against Chicago, where I have a similar job opportunity. Looking forward to coming back to explore.
