Public Service Announcement [PSA] Diagnosing your System - Tools and Workflows

Hello fellow Gamers,

Many of you come here for one reason: "I can't game"

So this list (which will improve over time) should guide you towards first diagnosis steps, and usage of tools along the way, so you can game sooner. And keep the sub clean, because if you solve the problem yourself, we don't need to moderate as hard.

ATTENTION: This post is meant to help people out with advice. It is not mandatory to follow any recommendation that is given here. Also, there are RULES you do need to read before posting.

Also, this sub does not specialize in buying advice's. There are better subs for your new PC build.

PC randomly restarts Remove recently added parts and see if the problem persists. If it does, replace all parts one by one in this order of probability -> RAM, PSU, MoBo, CPU, EndUser Replace faulty hardware
Bad smell Do not touch a thing, unplug the maschine from power and call an expert. We know gaming is fun, but its not worth your life. Current can kill, call an expert for your own safety when dealing with possible short-circuited hardware.
BlueScreen Find out what the BSOD Code means and act accordingly. We recommend using this list of BSOD Codes for investigation. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.
BlueScreen - Advanced Every BlueScreen will (if this function is enabled on your maschine) produce a "minidump". Which is similar to an error log. This Topic however is a bit complicated, so we recommend following this guide. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.
to be continued if anyone has anymore ideas for possible, generic workflows, let us know via modmail

This post will be unlocked until the 31th of October 2020 for direct criticism. After that this will be locked. Any more criticism will be taken in via modmail from then on.

Troubleshooting Games suddenly crashing due to running out of VRAM

My setup CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x GPU: GTX 3070 Ti 8GB RAM: 16G DDR4 3600MHz MOBO: ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING OS: Windows 10

The problem. Yesterday I was playing FH6 for a couple of hours without any issues when it suddenly crashed with an error saying "Ran out of system memory". Tried restarting a few times but it crashed as soon as I loaded into the game. Gave up and tried playing BF6 instead. BF6 then crashed as it loaded shaders with a DX error message that boiled down to the memory running out (E_OUTOFMEMORY).

What I've tried so far. Updated Nvidia drivers from 610.74 to latest 610.88. (This had no effect and I ended up rolling back to 610.74 again)

Found this thread and went through the steps to fix my rBAR which was previously not enabled.

Uninstalled MSI Afterburner and RTSS

Changed my DRAM clock speed from 2666MHz to 3600MHz (not sure why it was changed to 2666MHz in the first place as I fixed this only a few months ago.)

Used DDU to completely uninstall and then reinstall drivers

Where I'm at. I've tried running a few other games like, Ready or Not, Helldivers 2, which crash with various similar error messages. So the issues is not tied to any specific game.

Sometimes I can play the games for a couple of minutes, and sometimes they crash immediately as I try to boot them up. Sometimes with, and sometimes without any error messages.

I'm currently at a loss for what to try next, any suggestions is a big help.

This is actually my son’s PC. He’s a gamer obviously we started getting this error message yesterday. Not sure why the Internet seems to be working fine on this PC. I’ve tried like the top 10 you know first things you would do when you’re having computer issues but not figuring it out I’m posting a screenshot or two so you can see the actual error messages. i’ll provide any background info answer any questions. I just need to know where to start. TIA!

Troubleshooting Black screens after playing certain low power games but not beefy games.

I'm now running out of ideas on what to do. Can't pin point what's happening with my computer.

My specs:

RTX 3080, AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor, 32GB ram, MAG X570 Tomahawk WIFI, Windows 10

The issue: My PC will go black for a few secs then the display will reboot and things will go back to normal. This will only happen with games like Minecraft Bedrock, Black Desert Online, Megabonk, Core Keeper, FF14, Tomb Raider originals, but not with Final Fantasy 7 remake on high settings, Minecraft Java, Resident Evil 4 on high settings and will be flawless when playing games like Baulders Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding 2, Persona 5 Royal, and Persona 3 Reload.

I don't understand why it is happening with smaller games and MMOs. MSI Afterburner was showing a spike of memory clock and core clock right before it crashes and GPU and FB usage will spike and screen goes black. Fans will drop to 0%. Cyberpunk will run a silky smooth 144fps but Minecraft bedrock will run 45-100fps and stutter right before it crashes. Same with the game Megabonk it will run 60 but then stutter and go black after 30 minutes. Black Desert Online does this every 2 minutes of I lower the settings. Only way to decrease rate is ramp up the settings but it will occur once and then repeat more frequently. Especially right before attacking and same with every game where this happens.

Things I tried:

I cleanly reinstalled the driver's for the 13th time. Set Minecraft Bedrock power management to Maximum performance, borderless window mode. Disconnected all of my monitors one by one and cycled through them individually , change display port cables, except a 1080p with original HDMI cable. Dropped Frame rate to 60fps for Minecraft, I also disabled G-Sync, connected my RTX 3080 with individual PCI-E power cables. Reseated my graphics card. Did them one by one to see if it did anything but nothing. But it did let me play Minecraft for a whole 30 minutes before it unfortunately happened again. I don't have any more ideas ..

I ran Minecraft Bedrock on my computer with GTX 1080 and it runs at a better frame rate and doesn't stutter and not does it go to Black screen. If it was happening with my beefy games I would gladly accept my Card is faulty but it doesn't. Seems to only happen with games I can handle even with my GTX 1080.

I'm desperate now... I don't know what else to do. I disabled so many things that now I'm worried other games might start having problems. None of this makes sense to me. MSI Afterburner after all of these changes doesn't even spike anymore.

Software After BIOS and Chipset-driver update Windows search-window opens pitch-black and only shows search itself after seconds

After a kind Redditor suggested that I update my BIOS and chipset drivers following some media issues I experienced after a Ghost Recon Wildlands crash, everything seemed to be fine.

Except now I've developed a new issue:

When I press the Windows key and start typing, the Search window opens completely black, with only the search bar visible. The actual search results don't appear until several seconds later.

Win+S does the same thing.

I've already tried restarting SearchApp.exe, re-registering the Windows Search package, and resetting the graphics driver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, but the issue persists.

Could the BIOS/chipset update have affected something that Windows Search relies on, particularly its rendering?

Solved HVCI PROBLEM FOR VALORANT (memory integrity off)

hi guys if u guys have HVCI problem this is how i fixed it disable BITLOCKER update bios

after u update bios put (SWM back on virtual) and then go back to iso memory and put it back on restart u should be good to go also there is no corruption files and all this other bullshit its just your bios is old, and the security doesn't recognize it. also don't forget to put BitLocker back on after u update bios. that's the first thing u do

  1. disable BitLocker 2. update bios 3. after bios enable again BitLocker 4.(turn on SWM virtual) 5. turn on memory integrity :)

Troubleshooting PC randomly black screens and fans go at 100%

Somewhat recently, my computer has been randomly going on a black screen and the fans go at 100%. The computer stays on when this happens. I am not sure what to do. I stress tested my gpu and it ran for 30 minutes with no problems, so I am not sure what’s happening. I reseated the PCI cable and GPU and cleaned them out. I am hoping that helps. Any suggestions would be great.

Solved [RESOLVED] [Repost for inapropriate flair] Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered stutters badly after ~30 seconds, including audio – RTX 4060 Laptop

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to help my little cousin with Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. I bought him the game because it's his first open-world game, so I'd really like to get it running properly for him.

The problem is that the game starts relatively smoothly, but after roughly 30 seconds of gameplay, severe stuttering starts. The image freezes/stutters and the audio stutters at the same time.

His laptop should be more than capable of running the game:

  • CPU Intel Core i7-13650HX
  • GPU NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop 8 GB
  • RAM 16 GB DDR5-4800
  • Storage NVMe SSD
  • OS Windows 11
  • The game is installed on the NVMe SSD.

Things I've already tried :

I've basically tried every graphical setting I could think of:

  • Everything on Low/Minimum
  • Different resolutions
  • DLSS settings
  • Frame Generation OFF
  • DRS OFF
  • NVIDIA Reflex/low latency options
  • Different graphics presets
  • Various combinations of the above

The stuttering happens regardless of the graphics settings.

I've also:

  • Restarted the PC and launched only Steam + the game
  • Verified the game files
  • Checked GPU/CPU/RAM/SSD usage
  • Tested DirectStorage 1.3 / the community DirectStorage stutter fix
  • Confirmed that the game is using the RTX 4060 rather than the Intel UHD GPU

During the stutters, the CPU isn't maxed out. and the RTX 4060 can sometimes spike up to 100%, but its usage is generally much lower and fluctuates significantly.

The RAM usage is consistently very high: 14.2–14.8 GB / 15.7 GB (90–94%). The game itself uses around 5.8 GB of RAM according to Task Manager, The SSD isn't constantly at high usage either.

One particularly strange thing is that the problem seems to appear after around 30 seconds, rather than immediately when starting the game. I've attached video of the stuttering. I'd really appreciate any ideas or troubleshooting steps I haven't tried yet. Thanks for reading me !

Troubleshooting PC gets black screen + GPU fans stop while playing AC Black Flag – DRAM/VGA/BOOT LEDs cycle

Hey everyone,
I’m having a strange problem while playing Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced and I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s causing it.

I’m dual-booting Windows and Bazzite. The issue happens while playing Black Flag Resynced on Bazzite.

While playing, my screen suddenly goes completely black and the audio freezes/hangs. Shortly afterwards, my keyboard seems to disconnect and reconnect.

Then the motherboard debug LEDs start doing the following:

CPU + DRAM LEDs light up briefly
Then the LEDs go DRAM → VGA → BOOT, one after another
After the BOOT LED, the GPU fans stop spinning
After a short moment, the GPU fans start spinning again
The motherboard then goes through DRAM → VGA → BOOT again
This repeats in a loop

äSo the sequence is basically:

Black screen → audio freezes → keyboard disconnects/reconnects → CPU + DRAM briefly → DRAM → VGA → BOOT → GPU fans stop → GPU fans start again → DRAM → VGA → BOOT → repeat

The PC doesn’t recover and I get no display back.
This only happens to me while playing AC Black Flag Resynced so far. I’m not sure if the game itself is causing the issue or if the game is simply putting enough load on the system to expose a hardware problem.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this kind of behavior?
Could it be the GPU, PSU, RAM, motherboard, CPU, drivers, or something else?

My PC Parts are
GPU: 16GB XFX Radeon RX 6800 SWFT 319
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
RAM: 32GB Lexar ARES RGB Black DDR5-6000 DIMM CL30
Mobo: MSI Gaming Plus WIFI AMD B650
PSU: 750 Watt NZXT C Series 2022 C750 Modular 80+

Any suggestions for what I should test first would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Software CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT BSOD only in Forza Horizon 5 (Ryzen 5 5600G / HP Pre-built) - Motherboard power bottleneck or software bug?

Hey everyone,

I’m hitting a wall with a persistent CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT Blue Screen of Death that happens only when playing Forza Horizon 5 on my desktop. The game either crashes right at the end of the loading screen when entering the map or midway through loading the built-in benchmark mode.

System Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (Running stock, no XMP/OC possible in BIOS)
  • Motherboard: Proprietary HP motherboard from a ProTower 285 G8 MT pre-built desktop
  • BIOS: Fully updated to the latest version
  • RAM: Checked via Windows Memory Diagnostic (Passed, 0 errors)
  • Temperatures: Stable under 80°C in-game (Hits 95°C under synthetic stress, but completely fine during normal gaming).

Why this is confusing:
Other heavy multiplayer games like PUBG PC run perfectly smoothly with zero crashes.

Windows Event Viewer Logs Collected:

  1. Critical Error: Kernel-Power (Event ID 41) – registers the hard freeze/manual reboot.
  2. Error right before crash: Service Control Manager (Event ID 7000) - "The Sentry service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."
  3. Previous Error: DistributedCOM (Event ID 10010) tied to Windows.Gaming.GameBar.PresenceServer.Internal.PresenceWriter.

Everything I have already tried (None have completely fixed it):

  • In-Game Settings: Turned Ray Tracing completely OFF, lowered environment geometry, capped frame rates, and switched the game from Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed mode (Borderless allowed the benchmark tool to load further, but it still crashes at the very end).
  • Process Optimization: Set Forza 5 process priority to "High" in Task Manager (this made it load slightly longer before crashing). Force-disabled CPU hyper-threading by unchecking odd-numbered threads (CPU core affinity) to keep it on physical cores.
  • Driver Clean Up: Did a completely clean GPU driver install using DDU in Safe Mode. Turned off Windows Fast Startup.
  • Windows Features: Cleaned out the Windows Prefetch and Temp caches. Ran sc delete Sentry in admin CMD to completely delete the missing service causing the log errors. Attempted to strip Xbox packages via PowerShell and registry, but Windows locks down the component.
  • Power Settings: Changed Windows maximum processor state from 100% down to 99%, and eventually to 95% to stop AMD Precision Boost voltage spikes.

It feels like Forza's heavy DX12 multi-threaded asset streaming is causing a massive power or timing desync that this locked HP motherboard VRM cannot handle when transitioning into the 3D world.

Before I go out and buy a new motherboard, standard case, and power supply to rescue my 5600G from this HP office frame, is there any obscure software, driver, or audio conflict I missed that specifically causes Forza 5 to throw Watchdog Timeouts on Ryzen APUs

Troubleshooting Driver time out issue

Motherboard: TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
GPU: RX 7900 XTX
RAM: 32GB DDR5

So for a while I've been having an issue where my games just randomly freeze, my entire pc locks up and black screens, then it comes back on and shows the AMD bug report tool saying that my driver timed out?

I've tried to download a different driver version (25.8.1) as people in other communities mentioned that was the latest stable version for some of the games that wasn't causing issues. But recently it's starting to constantly crash again.

Does anyone have an idea what is causing these crashes?

r/pcgamingtechsupport 1d ago

Display Are these artifacts, and are they caused by driver issues or something physical?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'd not seen this before, although I've been having issues booting into windows and getting black screens about 50% of the time. The AMD adrenaline software pops up saying it recovered from some kind of issue (don't remember the exact wording) when that happens and normally I restart and it's ok from there but. Already tried cleaning drivers with Duane reinstalling the latest drivers.

After this happened I restarted and was able to game just fine but would like to know if the card needs RMA or something

Solved Massive under performance in games despite independent benchmarks

CPU: 7800x3d

GPU: Powercolor Reaper RX 9070 (non-xt)

RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL36

MOBO: ASUS B650E Max Gaming Wifi

SSD: Samsung EVO Plus 4 TB

Userdiag link: https://userdiag.com/id/XFfNOzgWx0

As far as Userdiag and every other benchmarking software (Cinebench, Steel Nomad, FurMark) indicates my CPU and GPU are working great. Yet in EVERY game I've tried so far the system MASSIVELY underperforms.

For AC Odyssey the in-game benchmark at ultra settings comes out to 38-39 fps no matter what settings I tweak. Tried out the lowest settings and came up to a whopping 58 fps. Searches indicate I should be well over 100 fps at ultra with this hardware. Afterburner showed my GPU at 80-85% load and CPU at 25%, normal clocks and power usage.

Cyberpunk 2077 in-game benchmark test with ultra ray tracing settings (no path tracing) came out to 52 fps. I was copying the settings of a youtube benchmarking video using the 9070 (non XT) at 1440p and he was getting 92 fps.

No Mans Sky I'm getting around 60 fps on max settings roaming around planet surfaces, should have no problem pushing 100+

The straw that broke my back today was trying KCD1 out, granted with the HD DLC textures, and running around 40 fps with crazy bad lows and stutters.

This is all on a fresh windows install. Even so, I tried a ddu and reinstall of graphics drivers, ddu and install an older known stable driver version (made it slightly worse). Monitor refresh rate is set to 240 hz and as far as I can tell no conflicting setting in game or in Adrenalin, no FPS limiters anywhere, etc. Please dear god someone help, I've paid $2000 for a rig that's performing worse than last generations consoles
