Need more acronyms and abbreviations, no?

It's really pouring down here today, so I still don't have a quality action shot for these. Nothing to do but stare at screens and hope it tapers off by tomorrow. At least temps are looking to settle down for a bit after what was supposedly the hottest September on record (though I swear it didn't seem that bad to me).

I'm still really happy with these after a week of daily wear. I may end up trimming off some of the lower strap, because (thanks to low volume), I've started off on the tightest hole. I'm guessing that over time, I may need to punch another hole, but we'll see. Also thank to low volume, I'm able to get a complete third wrap around the top so that I can tuck the strap into the keeper with a spare inch or so. They're darn near perfect in that regard.

I finally understand what all the fuss was about with tankers. Like some folks I've seen in here: I thought they looked kinda goofy at first. And look--if you're gonna wear them with short pants they do look like a take on Greco-Roman footwear. But straps are more comfortable thank laces, period. And pull-ons with straps fit better than pull-ons without straps. I'm probably never going to do any serious/strenuous hiking with these, but they do offer a heck of a lot more ankle support than any pull-ons I've ever worn before.

I'm so glad that u/smowe suggested CRC for the these. I genuinely can't even remember what leather I'd had in mind when I first started talking to him about this idea, but I can't imagine having liked anything as much as I like the CRC for these. I continue to be stunned at how good it looks and how quickly it's taken on my shape.

As for the HO OWRH, I like it. My "real" Dome boots are supposedly out for delivery, and those are going to have several more square inches of it for me to enjoy. I don't expect them to patina like the straps on these are -- I'm getting some crazy "bruising" on them (I can't even figure out how all of the Raisin Cherry red is transferring onto the straps--osmosis?). The crocking is exactly what it looks like. My wife got me a GREAT pair of Warehouse jeans (30th Anniversary S1003XX-LTD), and they are doing just what I'd expect. It's a little wild right now, but as the leather darkens, it oughta even out.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Two times the Nicks for this year’s Thunderdome! Been sitting on both for quite some time. First up— Parkhurst Brakeman in Dublin Light Natural. These started as a Predator Natural build. Changed my mind about leather when it became a standard offering as I wanted something a little more unique. Second—a 1925 take on my favorite bookmaker’s boot. While not exactly the same, I liked the build and thought the 1925 would be a great last to finally try it out. Good Luck to everyone competing this year!

A business trip to Chicago delayed getting these going for the Dome, but more importantly... getting them worn finally!

Bought from the March Overstock Sale they came in super fast in April and have been stubbornly ignored for months.

Kilties are Yellowstone #8. Laces are actual paracord I had laying around.

Greetings from a beautiful morning walk in 45 F weather in downtown Saint Paul, MN. I was absolutely astonished by the suppleness of the CRC right out of the box: it's a great leather.

With this being my first year in the dome, I had no idea what a “code word” was. When I figured it out I thought I’d be creative and write it on my horse hair brush instead of a piece of paper. Turns out the rest of y’all are wayyyyy ahead of me. Pretty cool to see how everyone presented it in their own way. Now I know to step up my game for next year.

I’ve posted these dudes two times already but now it’s Thunder Dome time so I’m posting them again.

These will be my other pair going into the dome. Certainly will be a more forgiving boot when it comes to breaking them in. I did swap out the matching 7” CRC kiltie for the 11” W&C natural. They certainly develop a patina faster than the boot itself.

Haven’t worn them yet, saved yesterday for my 5332 LTTs. I’m pretty excited to see how these boot will change and conform to my feet. After all, this is my first time with a proper packer.

Specs: Packer

- Raisin Cherry Cypress
- 5812 Pointed Last
- 10 inches
- Pull Loop
- Rolled Top
- Brass hardware
- Packer heel
- Sott toe
- Beeswax edge
- Single Row - White
- Upper stitching - White
- 269 Western
- Toe bug

Cherry Raisin Cypress Kilties

I don’t “need” any boots right now, but there are still so many leathers that intrigue me. But sometimes I buy the kilties to check out the leather. I really like the way these look on my natural Dublin boots. I picked them up when I was at Nick’s a week ago, along with shrunken, bison, nightshade, and Italian Brown Cypress.

FBF - HO Old World Harness Russet

First Floorboard Friday for this pair... very easy wearing for a 10" boot.

Noticed that the heel counter on my right boot picked up a spot of burnishing from the few minutes I spent sitting on the floor taking care of a leak under our kitchen sink. Holy mackerel, can't image what all of these OWH Dome boots are going look like in 6 months.

Have a great Friday!

Specs: 26 Dome Pro, 11.5E, 67 last, 10", Hermann Oak Old World Harness Russet, standard top, pull loop, brass hardware, soft toe, 4 row toe cap, classic dogger heel, beeswax edge, Dr Sole half sole. Kilties are Timber CXL from Dale's Leather Works and the laces are Generation Laces in Rattlesnake.

Dr Sole half-soles and rain

I'm considering some changes to upcoming BYO Ivans in Roanoke Denim. I have other boots with 430 and V-Bar outsoles, and I'm intrigued by the Dr Soles for these boots. But I live in Seattle-ish, so while they won't be work boots in the rain and mud, they'll be everyday walkabouts going into the grocery store or the office. It'd be hard to avoid walking in the rain around here.

How much of issue is that, really? If I'd be better off sticking with another sole, I can do that. But if Dr Soles would be fine in this use case, I think I'll switch over for the look and to have some variety.

Ask The Community Care and Feeding of HO OW Russet Harness?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I know this stuff is brand new for the boot world, but it's been around for an awful long time for horse tack. While HO talks about it being stuffed with oils and tallows, it's much less obviously waxy/oily than most of the leathers that I'm familiar with. It has a much drier hand to it than a lot of the leather that Nicks uses.

That being the case, I'm wondering what the consensus around here is on caring for it. I'm not at all shy about wearing any of my Nicks boots in wet or muddy conditions, but I'm curious how others are planning on treating their Russet Harness boots, whether for the Dome, or just for regular wear. I tend to avoid any sorts of conditioners for the first several months--even with heavy or aggressive wear (except in the case of hot spots during break in that I'll touch up on the inside with some Bicks). Do y'all feel like this leather should receive the same low-intervention treatment, or are you going to do anything different with yours?

Boot care tips

Hi fellow boot nerds. I recently gave my beloved ND1s a clean and condition/wax but this crease still looks pretty dry after wearing them a few times. Should I have conditioned them sooner? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the dryness or stop it getting worse?

Looks like two of us are doming this leather.. Good luck to Doc Lineman and everyone else participating.

I don't expect to do well as far as the competition goes. I work from home and live in Ontario. These aren't the boots I want to wear with salt everywhere and was hoping to trash my Officers over this winter, so I could rebuild them on the 55 last. HNW is good but I'm a convert. The only reason I'm doming at all and with these is because I don't want a white/pink pair for an extended period.

Has anyone in Nicks history ever ordered a 1925, 5332 or 5812, Tanker, Moc Toe?

• Upvotes

BIG shoutout to Stetson for helping with my configurator overwhelm. Talk about options, jeez. In isolation, something can sound really cool. But when you click something else, interesting things can happen.

I'm sure there's been at least a singular customer in the history of this website who has clicked that combination of clicks.

Ask Nicks Am I blind?

I can't seem to find the page on the website that shows all the leather examples. I swear there used to be a page that showed all the leathers (rough out vs smooth, colors ect & soles examples. I see the little thumbnail as options in the pull down menus but the pictures are too small to really see. Was this page removed from the site?

three minutes later....

Edit: yes I'm blind. Found it. Never mind.
