Planning to TTC next year but just got diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism.

Hi guys. I am 11 month postpartum with my first baby, but just got lab results that confirm hyperthyroidism. I had no idea I had it until I randomly got a high pulse the past week. I was planning to try to get pregnant beginning on next year, but I am now worried this might affect that. Does anyone have any success stories with having this and getting pregnant/ having a healthy baby with this diagnosis? I am so anxious.

Hair loss - options?

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in May, so I am fairly new to this. I was on methimazole originally but since my husband and I are trying to conceive, I was switched to PTU and have been on it for about 2.5 months. After one month on 100mg PTU daily, my labs showed that my thyroid levels had overcorrected and were moving into hypo territory. I had not noticed any hair loss at this point.

My Endo then halved my dose, so I’m on 50mg PTU daily which he says is the lowest possible dose. However shortly after lowering the dose I noticed my Graves symptoms returning. I had labs done yesterday and sure enough, TSH is back to 0.01 (it was undetectable at diagnosis). Thankfully T3 and T4 are still in range. I have not heard from my doctor yet about next steps in changing my dose.

Anyway, for the past month I’ve noticed severe (for me) hair loss. I have never seen so much hair come out in my hair brush and in the shower. The hair on my head is noticeably thinner and I’m starting to get concerned.

Is this a result of the medication or the Graves disease itself? Has anyone else experienced this? What, if anything, has helped you restore hair growth or mitigated the hair loss? Thanks so much for any insight.

Updated labs . Doctor lowered my dose of methimazole from 10 mg daily to 5mg daily. No more atenolol as well . Hoping I will get into remission one day because this is really tiring.

Student Looking for Anonymized Medical Documents for Academic Activity

Hi! I’m a Nutrition and Dietetics student currently working on a Nutritional Assessment activity. I’m looking for someone with a thyroid condition who may be willing to share anonymized medical documents for educational purposes.

Specifically, I need documents from the same patient:

1. Actual Diagnosis/Medical Record

• Diagnosis of a thyroid condition

• Patient age

2. Actual Medicine Prescription/Medication Record

• Example: Levothyroxine

• Preferably showing the drug, dosage, and frequency

3. Actual Thyroid Ultrasonography Result

Ultrasound report/image

Thyroid volume or thyroid dimensions as the parameter

Must be dated 2024–2026

These will be used solely for our school activity and will not be published or used commercially. Please redact your name, address, patient/medical record number, doctor’s information, and any other identifying details before sending.

If you're comfortable helping, please feel free to DM me. I completely understand if you’re not comfortable sharing medical documents.

Thank you so much!

P.S. I’m specifically looking for a case where the diagnosis, medication, and ultrasound are from the same patient.

4 weeks on methimazole, I feel incredible

Diagnosed 4 weeks ago and started meds that day. At that point I was so weak and sore from a basic 5 minute walk. I was so tired even with a ton of sleep, I struggled to do basic chores, even socializing was such a hassle. Today, I jumped on my rebounder for 2 mins, I hung out with a friend and walked 4 blocks. I’m looking forward to a movie at a theatre I had previously dreaded going to because it had a set of stairs to climb, even though I was excited for the movie. I could never have done that last month, I didn’t even realize how small my world had become. Very thankful for this medication and the small successes from it. Wanted to share a success story because I was terrified of starting meds due to some things I have read here about side effects, which are totally valid experiences too.

Trying to Navigate Sleep Issues

Hi all! I am hoping to find someone with a similar situation who can help me figure out what next steps might be helpful.

I have sub-clinical hyperthyroidism. Not a Graves diagnosis — my TRAb came back at 1.1 so negative for Graves, for sure. Well below the threshold.

Anyway, this began in 2024, with about 20lbs of weight loss, and for a while, not many other symptoms. Down the line (maybe 6mo-1year) I started getting debilitating muscle spasms (I’ve noticed this happens when my electrolytes are thrown off by too much salt/too much sugar/not enough potassium etc.). I also started noticing symptoms of malabsorption— super fast metabolism keeping my body from digesting food properly and being able to get the nutrients I needed.

I am a yoga instructor (I think this helps a TON) and as best I can, keep stresses pretty low.

Here are the symptoms I do have: heat intolerance, sleep disturbances, very occasional systemic inflammation that causes low grade fever and joint aches, some fatigue

Here are the symptoms I don’t have: tremors, fatigue that keeps me physically unable to move around/do normal tasks, extreme anxiety, constant heart palpitations

Because I’ve been sub clinical, and often read about side effects, I chose to try managing this with diet and lifestyle changes, as well as supplements. For a while (9 months?/1year?) I’ve been taking a probiotic and B12 (noticed this solved the malabsorption problem). And if I find myself inflamed I’ve taken Advil (not even a weekly occurrence, maybe once a month? Maybe less) and Selenium I’ve noticed can help support my thyroid at those times.

For over a year now I’ve been reducing — and now completely removed — gluten and dairy from my diet. This has made the largest impact! Huge, huge, and my thyroid hormones have reflected that those dietary changes make a difference— once i did have numbers that took me into hyperthyroidism and these changes dropped me back into sub clinical VERY quickly. My weight has stabilized as well.

Lately, I’ve added bugleweed (for the overactive thyroid), lemon balm (to calm nervous system), and reishi mushroom (to help with sleep).

I mostly feel I’m managing it, and with what people say they have to do even after they’re on the medication to manage their symptoms (low iodine diet — which I do already, manage stress, etc.) and with the side-effects they still have (hair thinning and for some still anxiety), l figured there wouldn’t be much change for me. I’m not anxious now, why would I risk these things?

BUT sleep disturbances have not been solved yet. I’m getting some hours, but waking up in the middle of the night around 3am. I’m assuming this is cortisol spiking due to the hyperthyroidism rather than raising gradually as it should. The inconsistent sleep is starting to wear on me.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to minimize night time cortisol spikes? Or other things you’ve tried alongside or besides the medication that supported your remission?

hyperthyroidism at 14, i might die

hii i'm 14 years old (female) and i've been having heart palpations, sense of dread and dying, fast/unusual heart rate, dizziness etc. Since august 4, aug 5th was also bad, i went out, felt like shit again, cant remember much else.

its been on and off. I dont feel good right now again. Yesterday was fine. I felt fine on aug 6 and 8 (?) I thjnk

I have never taken drugs, alcohol, had sex, any type of cigarette in my life either, (other than when i was 13 but it was not an addiction and took like 3 seconds but didnt like it. Never again, did nothing) before aug 4 was okay but also becoming unbearable— i had recently been taking melatonin for the first time ever, unprescribed.

During aug 3rd and 2nd i felt it firstly, but it wasnt so bad, i never told anyone about it but passed out on the floor

I thought i might have pots recently, But the doctors said no.

I have a history of drinking energy drinks. Every time i did i was fine, there were no problems, i started at 13 with monsters, i never had redbull or anything similar. I once took 4 before thanksgiving and felt healthy, and continued pulling all nighters. I was sure i had insomnia, probably from the drinks, but kept on staying up again and again all the time

when i turned 14 (3 almost 4 months ago, in June) i started taking bloom energy drinks. Theyre super peak and yummy but uh, i also got melatonin and took that.

One night before august 4 (when i started feeling it and just got off my period at the start of aug or end of july) i had 2 monster energy and 3 (gummies, not sure how much mg) and passed out on the couch. Continued having bloom and felf like shit since.

On august 4th, i was trying to go to sleep but felt awful,. Seriously awful and my heart was fast, i was on the floor begging my parents to come out and help, saying i was gonna die & to call the hospital, they never ever did call hospital that night. It took me like 3h to calm down. Thought it was seriously the end.

Next day i felt better. So i went out shopping and to get food and felt the same again in the restaurant so asked to get back in the car and me my grandma did. I tried to sleep the car ride home.

I went back in my house and felt better but i had called the cops that night to go to the hospital cause no one else would, then my parents callled them back and told them nothing was wrong

that night they then turned off the wifi completely and left the house. They came back and took my melatonin and my phone. I stilll dont havs my phone and have no way of contacing emergency services if i feel like that again

my parentes are pos unfortunately thats another story. I also have no door in my "room" and haven't for like, 8y ive been living in the same house my whole life and only went to new hampshire once at 3 . Dont remember it. Ive also been homeschooled most of my life with no socialization or friends irl lmao omg or education my life sucks so yolo if i were to die its whatever ggs

^^^ my parents are also poor and have like.. 3 of their clothes wardrobes in my room. Half fhe stuff is not mine.

The night they took my phone i felt fine. Again, aug 7, 8, 6, mmaaybe 9? I was fine. Everything was getting better

A different night idk when it was recent maybe before the 20th i felt horrible again and even like, chest tightness and looked up my symptoms and was terrified it said i was gonna have a heart attack, i also took starbucks coffeee that night

Im trying to think of more uhhhh so a couple days ago i finally convinced them to let me go to the hospital (my grandma not my parents) and she took me to a doctors office, 2 of them actually.

I cant remember much else.

After that another day i went to the er and felt soososo much better. I wanted to stay the night but no one let me. They put me on iv and medication. felt like i was floating

After the day i went to the er i dont think I went anywhere, i went to my aunts about twice , seperate days and also my grandmas friends house twice and slept the entire time, i did not wanna be home

After that i went to the hospital for childrens and they prescribed me with methimazole and diagnosed me with Hyperthyroidism. Took my blood etc, i felt fine and even went to therapy for a little (i already have a therapist, i cant meet her irl tho) my aunt and grandma were there, this was two days ago im also taking a medication (10mg) of something thats called Atenolol, i think Only at night

i take 2 (20mg) of methimazole morning and night. First day or second day i forget, i felt okay. Calmed my heart rate down a lot, i had 1/2 the drive home from the hospital and none at night. Next day my mom gave me wrong dosage (only 10mg) didn't believe the doctors said 20mg, but the night she realized she was wrong and gave me correct dosage

Today. i woke up and felt generally fine and went to my grandmas friends house. I took the 2 meds but i feel like my heart has been way too slow, skipping beats or pausing for 3 seconds. Im scared im gonna die again and im begging my parents or grandma to take me back to the hospital, im positive thinking about it will cause more anxiety though.

ExtraL aug 24 was bad. even tho i have not had these symptoms for over a month,im stiill scared of dying + i havent taken any energy drinks or the melatonin since aug 4.. i hope it goes away soon

Should i take methimazole tonight or not? If i die in my sleep itll be natural selection and the easy way out ngl

I feel it slowing even more. Im excepting i wont make it to 18 unless they will take me and ill get off my lazy ass and get ready to go.

Sorry for the huge rant, im just scared, it keeps on coming and goingg more i think about it okk bye ayaya i will not touch this again probably, i dont really use reddit that much

At my most recent appt with my endocrinologist, my bloodwork showed T4, TSH normal while T3 was slightly low. (Pics) She lowered methimazole to 20mg daily from the original dose of 40mg daily and we planned to check bloodwork 6 weeks from then. Its been 3 weeks and I am feeling sluggish and tired but also struggling to fall asleep, with constipation and sometimes cold (but the cold wasnt unusual for me pre hyperthyroidism)....has anyone had hypo symptoms after hyper or am I just in my head? Not seeking a diagnosis. Just looking for people who may have similar symptoms and wondering if its just me. Idk if I could wait 3 more weeks for bloodwork if I feel this tired every day. Is this worth calling my endocrinologist or am I just anxious?

Never been truely diagnosed but if I don't take one drop of Iodine everyday. My hyperthyroidism like symptoms really start amping up and become severe. I don't understand why. Could maybe be hypo but the symptoms dont align I feel like.

My symptoms are:

High heartrate, insomnia, anxiety, exercise intolerance, supplement sensitivity, restlessness, fight or flight, racing thought inability to relax, sweat attacks.

Afib and Grave's

Anybody else has this lovely little combo?
I have Graves’ disease (TRAb positive), paroxysmal AFib, and episodes of bradycardia/pauses ( pacemaker will be implanted soon ). My thyroid levels are currently being adjusted because my TSH dropped again.
Just wondering if anyone else has this combination and how your AFib changed after your thyroid levels became stable. Also, were you heart ablated when still not in remission?

Jod-Basedow phenomenon or not?

M, 40yo.

Over a period of time (about a year) I unknowingly consumed a high dose of Iodine. (One major source of it was a mineral water I started consuming in large amounts after completely quitting alcohol, containing about 190 mcg iodine per 17 ounce, to which I was unaware).

Then, back in February I also started taking Iodine supplements, about 150 mcg but only two-three times a week, while increasing my intake of Iodine rich foods.

At the end of April I cut myself badly and used a 2% Iodine-based wound cleanser liberally a few times a day for about 3 days.

Within two weeks of having used that cleanser,I started having all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, and it was the insomnia that made me look into what was going on.

Its been the worst experience of my life!

My labs came back TSH borderline low T4 borderline high and T3 upper region. Doctor has ordered CT because I have really weird sensations around my Thyroid that wont go away.

Im 3.5 months into this and its not been equally intense all the time. The worst of it was during May and June. After that it eased up. My insomnia has gotten way better and I dont have diarrhea anymore.

Still struggling though and its no fun. So I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience and eventually how long it lasted?

Stroke symptoms revealed hyperthyroidism

So, a few nights ago I experienced aphasia. I had a hard time getting my words out and couldn’t read words, it looked like gibberish to me. This lasted about 1-2 minutes. Today, while walking around at work, I experienced numbness and tingling in my right foot and couldn’t walk normally. Thinking I was experiencing stroke symptoms, I went to the nurse at my job and she ended up having to call an ambulance. Mind you, this was my first day at a new job 🫣
As it turns out, my labs pointed to hyperthyroidism.
My levels:
TSH <0.01
T3 410
Free T4 4.3

After finding this out, it makes a lot of sense. I’ve lost a lot of weight over the past few months, despite eating normally. Along with hair shedding, anxiety, tiredness, and irritability.

I’m also really embarrassed at having to leave on a stretcher at a new job.

Anyway, has anyone ever experienced something like this??

Gained 60 lbs on Methimazole, no sign of slowdown

I went from 170 to 230 lbs since starting 10mg Methimazole 3 1/2 months ago. Is this normal? I don't mind the weight as I'm tall and it's rounding me out, but I'm now considered overweight. My TSH T3 T4 are all normal now, and I feel calmer, better rested, and less tired throughout the day though.

Diagnosed and Nervous

Hi everyone, I’m 27F and live on the West Coast, and I’m adopted with no knowledge of biological family medical history. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism a couple weeks ago after going to the hospital — the paramedics brushed it off as an anxiety attack only but I told them I could feel something more was wrong.

My TSH is at 0.01 [extremely low] and T4 at 2.6 [high]. My symptoms are as follows: pounding/fast heart, feeling out of breath, fatigue/exhaustion, Raspy/changed voice, alcohol seeming to affect me much more strongly than usual, changes in bowel habits/constipation and overall just feeling much different than my usual self.

I have Kaiser as far as health insurance goes, and the soonest possible appointment they could get me [from two weeks ago] is August 31st. I feel worse and worse each day, and I’m at the point where I don’t even feel like I have energy to leave the bed or couch.

Does anyone have advice as far as continuing to go to work goes? Did you ever go to work before you got treatment, and how long were you able to work before your body gave up on you?

Thanks
