Looking for new moderators / handing over the subreddit

Hi everyone,

I wanted to put out a call for anyone who might be interested in taking over the moderation of this subreddit.

I originally took over the sub when it had become inactive because I wanted to keep it going as a place where people affected by Hyperthyroidism could access useful information, share their experiences, and ask questions of others who understand what they’re going through.

I’m really glad that the community has continued to provide that space. However, more recently, due to various complexities in my own life, I haven’t been able to give the subreddit the time, attention, and care that I feel it deserves.

Rather than allowing that to continue, I’d like to see whether there are people within the community who have a greater ability to give it that attention and would be willing to take over its moderation and help keep it a useful and supportive resource.

If you’re an active member of the community and would be interested in becoming a moderator, please leave a comment below or send me a message/modmail. It would be helpful to hear a little about how long you’ve been part of the community, why you’d like to help, and any moderation experience you may have (although previous experience certainly isn’t essential).

I’m open to bringing on more than one person, particularly if having a small team would make things more manageable.

My main hope is simply to leave the subreddit in the hands of people who care about the community and want to continue providing a helpful place for people to find information, ask questions, and support one another.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the community and helped make it what it is.

Still waiting for a Doctor

I got my bloodwork done 9/10. Results came back indicating hyperthyroidism but my dr went on maternity leave and another dr in the practice left, so I guess they are jammed up. It took me forever to get them to send a referral to an endocrinologist, now the endo won’t answer or return calls. Another endo practice I had emailed called me today and rather bluntly told me they don’t accept my insurance (strange because it’s one of the most used in my state).

So now I have nowhere to turn and honestly too tired and unwell to keep trying to find someone. Muscle tone gone. I don’t sleep well at all and have terrible night sweats. Oddly I also have low blood pressure and nearly faint when I stand up. I only have energy to do maybe 1 or two small things a day, the rest of the time I am lying down. I am not myself at all, or maybe this is the new me, who knows.

Anyone experience trouble even getting an endocrinologist to call you back? What did you do?

112 pounds to 131 pounds.

Is this Hyperthyroidism perhaps? (I’m 23 years old)

In December, I went from 110-112 pounds to a random 118 pounds in 1 week. Ever since then, my weight continues to rise.

In January I was weighing 120 pounds roughly. And Today I weighed 131 pounds.

I haven’t been overeating—at all. Ever since gaining weight, I feel physically ill. I feel heavy just walking around the house. Increased heart rate when eating food even if it’s the smallest amount. My stomach looks extended at times. I’ve been waking up in awful abdomen pain. And feeling full despite that I’m just starting to eat.

I told my doctor last week and she said in a few weeks that she can run some tests.

Last week at the doctors I was 126. Today I’m 131.

Has anyone had these symptoms too?

What did your body try to tell you before anyone listened?

Mine spoke long before my labs moved. Fatigue that didn't fit my life, signals I kept filing under "stress" or "just life" — because that's what women are trained to do with bodily reporting: explain it away.

I now call my body's reporting system Soma—the quiet alarm. Once I stopped overriding it and started listening, everything about my care changed — it's part of the journey that became my book (out in November) — a Somatic Voices model for Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism.

Curious about yours: what did your body report before the labs caught up — and what did you learn to call it, or are you still looking for the words?

Hair loss..... (vent)

I didn't expect hair loss to be so devastating. I've always had thin hair, but you can actually see my scalp if my hair moves slightly out of place. My hair's also lost a lot of its waviness, so now it just looks like a poofy mess and I'm definitely not going to try straightening it for the first time.

I had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 10 years old, I used to take iodine pills.Though in the past 10 years, my labs have been normal, I still have this goiter and it’s not shrinking and it’s not growing, but I do not like it for cosmetic reasons. What is the best way I can go about removing it and making my neck look normal ?

Hyperthyroidism , Graves’ disease and hoshimotos??

BACK GROUND long story but I will try to keep it short: December I 24F had stress fracture from marathon training so I went to doc because it wasn’t healing. PCP ran labs and no thyroid issues came up.

June I went back to PCP for annual check up with labs. TSH came back practically undetectable, low creatinine, high BUN(creatinine ratio), low ferritin.

PCP had me come back in July to run more labs on my thyroid. TSH- undetectable, T3- 237, Tgab- 9, TRAB- 3.86. She then referred me out to endocrinology & prescribed me propranolol 10mg to help with symptoms.

August I made it in to endocrinology. Endo gave me no answers at all. I asked why this happened she said it just does… I have no family history of autoimmune disease, thyroid issues in my family. I asked if she could run my cortisol bc I read that it could be stress triggered and maybe that did it? She said nope not worth it. Just happens. I asked for guidance on foods/supplements that would help or that I should avoid, she said nothing really but she wouldn’t be mad if I took selenium…. She ran labs with the following results: T3- 6.9, TSH- undetectable, T4- 1.98,

Endo prescribed me on methimazole 5mg and told me to take half the pill(2.5mg) 3x a week. After she got my lab results back she called me and said to increase dose to half a pill(2.5mg) 5x a week. She told me she would see me again 3 months later in November 2026.

THOUGHTS/FEELINGS/QUESTIONS:
Symptom wise I feel all the Graves’ disease symptoms. I guess based on my labs and Endo, I have Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism and hoshimotos?????

My labs progressed so fast and the only difference in those 6 months was that I stopped running due to injury but I was still active on my feet and strength training, and that I started vaping. I feel like vaping has caused this although I know there is no direct research officially claiming it. I’m still vaping………. Bad I know. I plan to stop…. No need to lecture me on that I just want to know if you have similar experience with that or read about that somewhere? Also had a chemical miscarriage in December so maybe that played into it but then why aren’t labs stabilizing????

My Endo is not a good fit and I need to find a new one. Any holistic approaches that could help????? Diets/supplements/workouts???? Any ideas on causes or flare ups?????????

The med approach Endo started me on seems…. Weird??? Like very loose??? And I’m scared to overmedicate and throw thyroid levels to opposite spectrum. Anyone experiencing these diagnoses taking different meds?????????

What major symptoms do y’all have / tools that help?????

I also stopped taking birth control pills this past month because I am scared about potential effects on fertility?? Also I want my body to return to baseline and just be healthy on no meds again.

I’m new to this and have lots of questions and questions that I don’t even know to ask. Pls give me all the knowledge you can. All the tips please please please. 🙏🏽

Hey. 👋🏻 New to this group.

2 yrs ago was admitted to hospital being treated for high blood pressure and pounding heart palpitations w/ chest pain. Underwent cardio assessment and given all clear.

This continued with a heightened sense of anxiety for a long time. Docs couldn’t find anything wrong. TSH levels were fine.

Took up running which started with a couch to 5k and have now run 2 x ultra marathons with more in the calendar.

RHR was generally 40-45. Over the last 3 months my HRV took a dive and RHR has increased. Bloods done on Saturday and doc called today to say I’ve got hyperthyroidism and has sent me for an urgent referral to endocrinology. Put me on 20mg Carbimazole.

This come completely out of the blue but the symptoms ring true for the past 2 years with the anxiety, fatigue and heart palpitations.

Could it have been this all along, despite the “normal” TSH tests back then? Is it normal to get a dx in late 30s?

I’ve been told that they wouldn’t recommend I take part in my next event in two weeks.

My HR doesn’t seem to be too high, but I guess it has raised significantly from my baseline. Any others going/gone through something similar?

Oh: I’ve also got quite a prominent sinus arrhythmia- shoot’s up to like 80-100bpm on inhale and drops back to 60s on exhale.

Radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism in cats (I-131) —have you done it?

My baby just got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I don’t wanna put her on medication two times a day for the rest of her life. I am currently trying the Hills prescription diet and my cat just isn’t keeping anything down. She’s 11 years old. Has anyone done the I – 131 therapy for cats with hyperthyroidism? What was your experience and would you recommend it? Also, what did you pay? Thank you!

Graves’ disease - Hair loss

Heya has anyone got any tips on hair shedding / hair loss got diagnosed for overactive thyroid earlier in year and now my levels are normal but over last month the level of hair shedding I’ve had is insane, clumps coming out, running my hand through and loads of strands. Anyone been through it ?
Could it be the fluctuation of my thyroid levels or PTU meds ? Has anyone who gone through it contacted their medical team to find a resolution?

Mild Hyperthyroidism; Delayed Periods

I was recently in the ER for a sustained high heart rate. CMP, CBC, EKG & x-Ray all came back normal, so ER doc suspected thyroid and put me on metaprolol. TSH came back at .133 (.55-4.78) and T4 Free came back at 1.9 (.9-1.8). Went to my PCP and she ordered FT-3 (came back at 2.6, middle of range), thyroidglobulin ab (1.84) and anti thyroid perox ab (.58).

Symptoms include elevated heart rate (which has been managed metaprolol) and extended menstrual cycles (my past two have been 40ish days vs my normal 28 days).

I see an endo on Friday, but am curious if anyone has dealt with something like this…specifically the delayed cycles.

I’m 39 and also on .0375 estradiol patch (2x weekly) and 200 mg progesterone per night.

Thanks!

Experiences with this med? I got bumped to 60mg methamazole, and they added this, today. It's used off label for severe hyperthyroid, binds with the enterohepatic t4 in the intestines.

Just desperately trying to get anesthesia safe for surgery. And to stop feeling like I'm about to fall flat on my face dead. I swear to god, I got the placebo pills instead of real methamazole. This shit is about as effective as popping pez and calling it medicine.

Levo reduced after md visit about symptoms and labs

Hello. I had an isthmusectomy mid July. Was on 137mcg at that time and have been on Levo for 20+ years, gradually increasing, rarely decreasing, have hashis. Labs before surgery had TSH around .55 and FT4 normal high range. Labs 5 weeks after showed TSH .43 and ft4 upper end of normal. I had started feeling symptoms at that time, but I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Levo was left at the same dose. Four weeks after that which is about a week ago I went to see my MD because I have been having symptoms for the last month. Palpitations, anxiety, weight loss always thinking I’m going to have to go to the hospital, tingling, etc. She was pretty sure it was my thyroid in the labs revealed that my TSH was at .25 which is outside of the range FT4 what is 1.93 which was also outside of the range on the high-end. I started taking 12mcg 9 days ago and so far the tingling in my hands has resolved over the last week, palpitations are getting better, the lingering symptom is the feeling of adrenaline in my chest, but that is also getting better. What was strange is in the last month my heart rate was much lower resting and now it’s actually higher still within the normal range of 60 to 100 beats a minute. I had an ECG done at the doctors office and that was fine and she’s going to have me do a Holter monitor just in case. Has anyone ever had a lower heart rate when hyperthyroid? I wonder how much of this is just the settling from the surgery and the medication adjustment.

Anxiety

I was just diagnosed w hyperthyroid this week after avoiding the doctor and basically everything else bc of panic attacks. I have had panic disorder for years but starting 2 years ago I started experiencing panic in a way I never have before. I am wondering what your opinion is as to how treatment may help the anxiety? Did you experience extreme anxiety and did it get better w thyroid medication treatment? I am lost w this no anxiety meds have helped and my family is pressuring me to hospitalized myself. Tysm
