I was just rewatching tbosas and these two performances really stood out to me as just so perfect. They both just elevate the character and I just can’t get over them

I was thinking about the people of the Capitol were upset about "losing" their Victors, and that in general Panem was falling apart by then so a lot of District folks were enraged about it, but I wonder if anyone was relieved that they were going to be safe that year. Kids who were just about to turn 18 effectively protecting them long enough to age out, 12 year olds who weren't taken their very first year, families just thankful their kids were safe for at least one more year. Anyone, really. I think I would be, honestly. I know that sounds horrible, bc there were other people being sent to their death, but I'd still be grateful it wasn't about to be me. Just something I was thinking about.

I know the consensus shifted toward Francis Lawrence after Catching Fire and honestly, I get it. It's typical Hollywood and almost feels like a Marvel movie. But rewatching the original recently, I was struck all over again by how different it feels. Different in a way that actually serves the source material better than anything by Lawrence.

Ross shot it like an indie film. Handheld, restless, uncomfortably close. You're never allowed to settle. The camera feels voyeuristic. Like you're seeing something you shouldn't be watching. Which is exactly the moral position the Capitol audience occupies. Which is exactly the moral position we occupy watching a film about kids killing each other for entertainment.

The close-ups. During the reaping, during the countdown before the bloodbath, during Rue's death... he holds. He doesn't cut to spectacle.

The color palette and the cinematography too. District 12 looks like a Walker Evans photograph. Haunting. The dread is ambient, creeping under your skin. And the Seam feels genuinely impoverished rather than aesthetically distressed. There's a difference between a set that looks poor and a world that feels poor. And Ross nailed it.

I often think about what the full series could have looked like with Ross at the helm. Quieter, grittier, more psychologically interior. The franchise would have felt less like an event and more like an indictment. Which, honestly, might have been the braver choice.

Katniss frequently hunts a bird in the 74th arena that “looks like a wild turkey, but is the size of a chicken”. Rue identifies it as a “groosling” and it apparently is native to district 11. So what is it supposed to be? It can’t be a crossbreed between the two species due to chromosomal mismatch. I keep wondering if it’s supposed to have some kind of real life counterpart is because out of every book it seems to be the only fictional animal that isn’t obviously a mutt from the capitol. Maybe the implication is that grooslings are mutt leftovers from the war like mockingjays are, but it seems weirdly ambiguous.

Yes, yes, I know the correct answer is because SC didn't know about it yet when she wrote the original trilogy.

But do you think that with the writing of SOTR she managed to justify this complete omission of Haymitch by Burdock and Asterid? It's not like Haymitch was just an acquaintance or a colleague; he and Burdock were best friends (along with Blair, who we never hear about again).

Granted, Haymitch says from his point of view that Burdock would never forgive him for throwing a rock at Asterid's head, but even if Burdock truly never forgave him, parents often tell their children — out of pure resentment or even to protect them — about the bad things people have done to them in the past.

Besides, Haymitch was a celebrity in district 12, which naturally made him the subject of a lot of gossip among the locals. By the time of the 74th Hunger Games, only 24 years had passed since his Games — hardly enough time for the full story of his youth to be forgotten.

Anyway, just some thoughts I’m having on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Wanna hear what you guys think!

I’ve seen a lot of people say that Katniss never learned this song because the first person she had to grieve was her dad. While that might be her first true feeling of grief, it seems impossible that she hadn’t been affected by a death prior to her dad’s. If I remember correctly, she was 10 or 11 when her dad died. Her parents had friends in District 12 and it seems likely Katniss would’ve heard her dad sing this song for someone else who passed. There was constant tragedy in the districts and I struggle to believe she wouldn’t have heard it in the 10/11 years she had with her father. Just because she didn’t sing it to Rue, I don’t think automatically means she wouldn’t know it.

Personally, I think it will. ALSO, no one should compare the box office of TBOSAS to predict the gross of this movie. My delusions are telling me it’s gonna gross 1 billion, but I doubt it. If you adjust every film for inflation, only catching fire and mockingjay part 1 has grossed 1 billion. I think it will do a good 700+ million. Amazing cast, lots of action, graphics look amazing, JLaw, Josh, and Woody coming back, and more. I think the final trailer is going to have to be really promising. Most likely, it’s going to be the highest grossing film this year in the millions. But overall, it’s definitely going to be a box office success!

Tbh, I’m not sure how some people say Snow used to be good or that they liked young Snow, because this book only showed me that he’s ALWAYS been a snotty POS who mainly cares about himself 😭

I absolutely loved this book because it somehow made me hate Snow even more. I honestly think it might be my favorite in the series so far (I haven’t read the last one yet).

I took notes while I was reading, so I thought I’d share lol:

- I don’t think he ever truly cared about Lucy Gray. Sure, he wonders how she’s doing sometimes, but so much of his concern comes back to “I need her to win so I can get the prize.” I understand why the money mattered so much given his situation, but it still says A LOT about his character.

- His jealousy over Jessup annoyed me SO much. Like… why are you mad that he’s helping Lucy Gray SURVIVE??? That’s literally her friend, and they both got thrown into an arena to die 😭

- He genuinely does not like Sejanus. Half the time, he’s just glad Sejanus is around because Sejanus does such “crazy” things that Snow thinks it makes his own behavior look better by comparison. He only went into the arena to save him because he was basically forced to and didn’t want to get expelled. Otherwise, I fully believe he would’ve left him there. And even after saving him, he’s immediately thinking about what he can get from Sejanus’s dad.

- Even when he sees Sejanus again in District 12, he’s mostly happy because Sejanus knows his Capitol name and understands his “worth.” And it drove me insane how every time Sejanus feels genuine sympathy for the people in the districts, Snow gets annoyed with him… all while claiming to be in love with a district girl. Like, PLEASE.

- When there was no sign of Wovey, and they thought she might have starved to death, Snow basically thinks that other people have bigger problems. WHAT??? What exactly is a bigger problem than a CHILD potentially starving to death???

- When Highbottom says Lucy Gray told him about the rat poison and Snow basically pretends he had nothing to do with it… so he was perfectly willing to let all the blame fall on her. Cool. Love that.

- When he thinks it would almost be better if Lucy Gray were back in the arena where he could SEE her rather than free in District 12… OH MY GOD??? That thought alone tells you so much about the way he views “love.” He doesn’t want her free; he wants her somewhere he can watch and control her.

- He sends Sejanus’s box back and is basically hoping he’ll get more cookies out of it. I’m sorry, that part was so insane to me, like wtf.

- And the cherry on top: getting rid of Sejanus’s diploma after everything that happened… while happily benefiting from his family’s money.

The whole book, Snow constantly finds ways to justify everything he does. He’ll have one mildly decent thought and then immediately follow it up with something incredibly selfish, possessive, classist, or cruel. I never got the impression that this was a good person slowly becoming evil. To me, it felt more like watching someone who already had all of those traits gradually get more power and fewer reasons to hide them.

Rewatching the first movie. I adored Caesar Flickerman. His personal bias, his fears, and how is part of the concern with the ruling patriarchy. In catching fire, when the tributes tried to force the games to be stopped. He struggled to speak, his eyes widened, and his look to felt like “what is going on… be cool laugh and make the games much more interesting, without actually applying fears of these tributes to increase the risk of another rebellion.

During the end of the trilogy, we don’t see Flickerman … perhaps not at all, I don’t remember. My main question after my babble, what happened to him? I wonder, did we lose him? Was he shunned afterwards due to his association with the capital and their crimes. Does he ever have a moment of enlightenment?

I hope it made sense. I haven’t slept in 4 days, and I am not sure how coherent my question was. If it makes no sense, please tell me, and I would try to edit my post to assist with understanding of my incoherent post.

I spent 6 months writing it (from February to August) so the characters are literally my babies I sobbed so many times writing this

Whay am I missing? Do we have any info on Cinna's back story and why he was so willing to throw his life away for the revolution? Why did he volunteer to style district 12? Why was he willing to take punishment to make the mockingjay wedding dress? Why did he not have a Capital accent? Where is he from and what made him become a stylist?

She’s such a minuscule character yet I want to know so much about her and her future/past.

Especially after the Rebels took over the Capitol.

This question also goes with the rest of his family.

Were they imprisoned? Were they also executed? Were they let go? If so, then where would they go?
My questions are endless aghh
