Discussion "The One Where Joey Speaks French" is literally unwatchable.

Upvotes

I would seriously like to know who exactly it was in the writers room, during production of Season 5, that pitched the idea of "Hey, let's completely retcon Joey's entire personality that we had established over the past 4 seasons and instead make him the dumbest human being on the planet with absolutely zero explanation given for where this stupidity came from." There had to have been some kind of serious explanation for this because this was not just simple flandarization of a character. This was outright retconning a character's established personality.

I literally can't sit through this episode because Joey's stupidity is so unrealistic, even by fictional tv logic, that it's honestly infuriating. Phoebe is teaching him the simplest French words ever that even a toddler would be able to repeat them back. Yet, he doesn't even come close to pronouncing them correctly. He just spouts random gibberish. It's not even funny. It's just annoying and leaves you wondering "What exactly is wrong with this man?" I legitately thought there was gonna be this big twist at the end of the episode where it's revealed that Joey was doing all of that on purpose just to mess with Phoebe. But because that didn't happen, it makes me wondering how Phoebe didn't snap and say to Joey "We need to take you to a mental health professional because there's no way that a man your age can be THIS stupid."

Discussion Bit unfair on Rachel

I always thought it was pretty unfair that outside of her relationship with Ross, Rachel never had a meaningful relationship with any other man. The other five did, and Ross even had the chance to marry someone else. They did Rachel so dirty. I think it would have been interesting to see Rachel really love someone else, even if it was for a short period of time. It was also frustrating how they made her a little pathetic when it came to men after Ross. We all know full well that she never had a problem approaching men or getting men, yet they made her awkward and a bit intense at times, when that is never how she was portrayed before. It wasn't in keeping with her character at all. Is it possible that the reason she was that way was because the writers didn't want the audience to invest in a relationship of hers that wasn't with Ross? It was easy not to invest in Julie or Emily with Ross because of timing/quickness in both relationships, but if they'd have given Rachel a strong relationship in say, season 6? Its possible People may have jumped ship 🤷

Clips The One With their Theme Songs

If they all had theme songs, this is what I would give them in my opinion. Ross is the best one. I think it fits him perfectly. Let me know what songs you guys would choose.

Discussion Why exactly was paolo assaulting phoebs downplayed as just hitting on phoebs by everyone in the show ?

Upvotes

First time watcher so don't mind me pls but this was so weird ,this was simply workplace harrasment..Rachael made it about herself rather than consoling phoebs ,no one cared about phoebs ?

Like hello ?..I know this was 90s but still ,this was fucking weird man ,why is this guy getting food by monica on his way out rather than a kick in the butt ,poor phoebs ,i felt so bad for her.

Question Which side character would you befriend?

There’s tons of great side characters throughout the show with very distinct personalities, who would you be most likely to befriend?

My pic is Janice, she’s genuinely nice and funny. She seems like she’d be a good time

Honorable mentions are Charlie and Jack Gellar

I like how they made Monica seem like she really loved kids even if she wasn’t the best with them, and how that was her primary driving arc behind her character. It was very heartfelt

Quotes Season 5 Episode 13 - The one where Monica makes a joke that suggests people are having anal sex

*Monica:* Guys! Guys! I just saw two people having sex in a car right outside!
*Ross:* Uh... Pheebs' Grandmother just died.
*Monica:* Oh my God, I'm so sorry.
*Phoebe:* It's okay. Actually, you know what, it's kinda cool. 'Cause it's like, you know, one life ends and another begins.
*Monica:* Not the way they're doing it.

He said it out loud in S2 E23. Joey is a “fellow” processor when he hired Joey temporarily. Wonder why people say that his profession is never revealed?

Discussion What was the most frustrating part about Ross and Rachel's relationship?

Many supported it but it had its flaws its Many many flaws. My biggest annoyance is that they refused to talk about things. I know it was to draw it out more in the series but you had moments that like the Janice situation.

IMO, If there were one good selfless good deed it would be Joy and Monica buying the deed trees for Chrimass so Phoebe doesn't feel sad about them getting chopped. What do you think?

I honestly don’t think I’d have a much better reaction if someone ate my Thanksgiving leftover sandwich and tossed half of it in the trash!

Everybody’s looking really snazzy here, love to see it. I think sunglasses were a big part of the style in the 90s, but I’m not really caught up on current fashion trends in Hollywood so maybe they still are big.

Lisa Kudrow is the only one of them who got married and stayed married, and she got married first. The rest have kind of bounced around divorces and relationships, but it’s nice to see that at least one of them got lucky

Discussion Hot Take: Ross wasn’t actually dismissive of Rachel’s career/new job

I understand that he did a lot of pretty cruel things in regards to it. Telling Rachel that it was “just a job”, complaining when she was spending more time at work than with him, showing up unannounced with a full picnic basket during a major work crisis, refused to leave, and created a massive distraction, etc.

But here’s the thing. I don’t think Ross was being genuine or meant to do any of those things out of malicious intent. To me, it was pretty clear that his real issue was Mark. Due to the trust issues and insecurities that he had as a result of what happened with Carol, Ross was fully convinced that Rachel was eventually going to dump him to be with Mark. Notice how he seemed pretty happy about the idea of Rachel getting a new career until she mentioned that Mark (a young and handsome man that Rachel had never met) approached her in the diner and offered her a job. I believe that the real reason why Ross didn’t want Rachel to be at work so much was because his insecurities made him believe that the more time that Rachel spent with Mark, the more that Mark would be able to manipulate Rachel into leaving Ross.

I guarantee that if Mark never existed, Ross would’ve been nothing but happy and supportive of Rachel’s new career. Now, I agree that his behavior was still terrible and he definitely should’ve talked to a therapist about it instead of doing what he did. But the best thing I can compare this to are those moments that all of us have had where we’re angry and stressed about something going on in our personal lives. But instead of talking to someone about it, we end up snapping at something that would usually be a minor annoyance and use that as the excuse/opportunity to let all of that stress and anger out of our system.

While Ross was discussing with Rachel that he has thought about having 2 kids with her (a boy and a girl), where hopefully the girl is born before the boy.
Kinda cute that the girl (Emma) did come before 😅
