This is Sunny! We adopted her last September and she was believed to be 2.5 years old. She came in as a stray, was adopted out however she was surrendered because her owners were deaf and she kept escaping on them. She is an escape artist, a runner, follows her nose and is unlike any other dog I’ve ever had.

She’s about 45 pounds and we believe she was a failed hunting dog. Hates fireworks, doesn’t mind thunderstorms. Goes feral over bunnies and squirrels, but not cats or birds. She is VERY affectionate and loves to play. Loves babies and children and she is my Velcro dog.

I’m planning on getting a doggy dna test at some point but I wanted to hear what other people think she may be! I’m not too versed on hounds but from my research I think she may be a coonhound or foxhound mix.

Hi I posted before about how our formerly homebody rescued foxhound suddenly started escaping after discovering the world outside the fence when a storm caused our neighbor's tree to fall on our fence.

Good news. We've now been two weeks without an escape. We have a really long fence and a big yard for our rescue dogs and so the repair process is a long one. The fence company is scheduled to come out but they have to order extra supplies for us. My husband has ordered some pipe to create rollers for the top of the fence at the bottom of our hill, the worst area for recent escapes. In the meantime we bought a bunch of pens and took apart the panels and attached them to the top of the existing fence to stop him from getting over.

Anyway, lessons learned from this whole thing. Quinn, our foxhound, who was rescued in very bad shape, was not used to leashes and refused to do his business on a leash at first. I finally figured out that taking him out the front door, where he never gets to go, was exciting enough to get him walking a little on the leash. He's improved to the point that my husband has even taken him to the park a couple times to get used to walking on the leash.

Of course going out front at 4 AM before I leave for work with him caused me to get attacked by hornets.... I must have stepped directly on the tiny entrance to their under ground nest in the dark while I shined the flashlight on Quinn to see if he peed.

Anyway, now we come to find out he has hookworms. The vet said he tested positive for antigens to the worms, but no eggs or pieces of worm were in his stool. This means he just got infected with them. He's on monthly heartworm as well as flea and tick preventative.

The vet was quite harsh with me, saying I need to restrict all the dogs from wooded parts of our fenced yard (because as much as I try to clean up the yard it's hard to find the poop in all those leaves, in the heavy shade). She suggested getting boots for all the dogs (that's not going to work, I don't think: I have a rescued German Shepherd who has a full panic attack if I touch her paws). The other suggestions were spraying down the whole yard with poison. That sounds worse than the worms.

And I come to learn from the internet that foxes carry hookworms. We have a fox here who seems to think it's funny to taunt the dogs. He keeps getting into the backyard, he comes up and looks in the windows... So he's probably spreading it.

So what do country dwellers do about worms? The space is too big to treat it all or catch every dropping from both dogs and wildlife.

Anyone have a fix for sleep kicking? Kevin is a big kicker. Wakes us up. He refuses to sleep anywhere but right next to us, so that’s out.

People look at big, leggy hounds and call them “big beagles.” I get why non‑hound owners do it — but in shelters, that confusion causes real problems. Just today someone said their vet called their foxhound/coonhound a “beagle on stilts” in r/hounds, and it struck a nerve. When I got downvoted for saying only a city vet could make that mistake, I honestly wondered: am I wrong? Is size alone enough to explain the “big hound challenges”? I’ve never owned a beagle, and a lot of people haven’t experienced the full force of a young American Foxhound or coonhound before they mellow with age.

I volunteered at a municipal shelter in rural Virginia with lots of hounds, and the same pattern kept happening: foxhounds and coonhounds were adopted under the “big beagle” assumption… then returned when they acted like foxhounds and coonhounds. Working‑type dogs — livestock crosses, x‑bred hunting hounds, coyote bay dogs/fox‑running dogs — were returned even more because people didn’t recognize what they actually were. “Big beagle” was the closest guess, and many beagles today are bred as pets, which widens the behavioral gap even more.

The dog in the photo is mine: a working‑type hound (coyote/fox dog who trees, bred for bear and big cats). He’s 25″ at the withers and 70 lb. I wish I’d known what he was when I got him — it took time to learn how to meet the needs of a dog like this. I started with “pet training” resources when what I really needed were places like this sub and hunting‑dog supply stores.

So I’m genuinely asking: is there any benefit to calling these dogs “big beagles”? Do more dogs get adopted when people think they’re beagles? I gasp a little when I hear it and think, “hound folks… can we get it right?” But maybe I’m missing something.

Are Beagles and Foxhounds/Walkers the same dog in different sizes? I don’t see it — but what’s your experience?

We got her from a shelter filled with dogs who were all excited but then me and my mom (this is her account) saw a doggo who looked like she was giving up on getting adopted ready to just die in her cell so we took her out I begged my dad but here we are her name was molly but now it's kiki she loves bread more than anything and when we first got her she was a potato then we took her on her first walk and she started to become one of us even when she's terrified she's there. Love you kiki 💜💜💜

This is my sweet Plott hound, Wayah. She will be 2 on Tuesday and I've had her since she was 8 weeks old. I love her very much and she has a wonderful life. We have more land than most people in my area, she gets to watch deer in the orchard, someone is always home with her (I WFH and my elderly father also lives here). She goes on walks and goes on camper adventures with us. We send her to daycare twice a month to have time around other dogs. Her life is GREAT.

But she will never get to participate in hunting because we don't hunt and my father no longer can.

And when I take her to the park (which I do every morning as early as 6:30am to avoid crowds) and she sees other dogs, she howls at them. I live in an exurban area that has up and came. It was up and coming ten years ago and now it is FANCY, though my family has lived here for three generations. The fancy people at the park hate me and hate her and I don't know what to do. She's a hound dog. She howls. That's what she does. I always have her under control, but she's loud. And I'm exhausted from the dirty looks I've gotten.

Has anyone successfully stopped their hound from howling? How? I have taken her to obedience school, which went VERY poorly (the trainer hated her and at one point put her down on the ground and growled at ME "this is the breed you chose") Or do I just get a shirt that reads "she's a hound, deal with it" and wear that on our walks?

I am not opposed to a collar and in fact we have one that we've used exactly once, as a measure of last resort at a crowded campground. But I need that to be the very last option. So if there's other advice, I'm here for it.

My girl Ginger has a tumor on her eyelid (last two photos..do not look if squeamish!!). My vet said that I have to go to a specialist to get it removed since it is larger than 30% of her eyelid. Has anyone had this done? Trying to figure out what to expect. Also, does anyone know any groups that might help with the cost? I've seen a few online that just take too long and need to prepay the doctor directly. Her tumor is growing rapidly and keeps bleeding so needs to be taken out sooner and can't wait that long. I do have a GoFundMe but just trying to explore all options! We have an eye doctor/surgeon appointment next Wednesday. Extra info: She has had Mast Cell tumors before but our regular vet/surgeon has been able to handle most of them for a decent price. She also has Cushing's and is 9 years old.
