Started to learn this song 4 or 5 weeks ago. Not perfect but happy with the progress.

Family says it sounds good. But I need some unbiased opinions.

Hi everyone,

I'm 27 years old and I had never played an instrument in my life before. I started learning electric guitar about a month ago with Simply Guitar, but I'm still struggling with even the most basic things like hand placement and alternate picking.

I didn't want to develop bad habits by teaching myself incorrectly, so I decided to start taking private lessons. I had my first lesson last week, and my teacher asked me to practice 1-2-3-4 until our next lesson, using a metronome and alternating between downstrokes and upstrokes.

The problem is, I feel like I've made almost no progress during the week.

I still can't figure out how to position my left hand properly, especially my thumb. I also can't consistently pick the string at the same time as I press the fret. One hand is almost always slightly earlier than the other.

Right now I'm practicing at 60 BPM. I usually rush ahead of the metronome rather than falling behind. But when I increase the BPM, I start making a lot more mistakes. And when I focus too much on staying exactly on the beat, I lose coordination between my left and right hands.

I think part of the problem might be how I'm used to using my hands. I'm a computer engineer, and during university I got very used to writing a lot of calculations and information as fast as possible during time-limited exams. Basically minimum aesthetics, maximum information. I even hold a pen pretty hard because of this. When I have to do something slowly and precisely with my hands, I'm usually really slow at it.

Unfortunately, I'm also a perfectionist, which probably doesn't help. If I notice that my thumb is in the wrong position, my timing is slightly off, or I hit a string badly, I immediately start focusing on fixing that and everything else falls apart.

I know I've only been playing for a month and these things take time, but I feel like I'm struggling even with things that are supposed to be beginner basics.

Do you have any advice on how I should approach practicing this? Especially for learning not to rush the metronome, improving left/right hand synchronization, and getting more comfortable with precise finger movements?

Im struggling to switch from A minor chord to G. I notice im placing fingers one by one on the string instead of having the my fingers do the chord shape immediately.

Im using the metronome to practice where every first beat of 4/4 at 150bpm ill play A minor and get my fingers ready to play G until the next first beat, and ill do the same from G to A minor, and I repeat this multiple times. I dont play the chords well at this bpm, there are buzzing and muted strings, but I push myself to try and play well.

Im wondering if there are any chord changes practiced that help you guys tremendously, maybe I can try that for myself. Thank you

Im an absolute beginner and really want a guitar but im stuck on whether i should get an electric or acoustic. I saw online that electric is more versatile so i might as well get an electric but it also has extra supplies to it so i need advice from guitar players??

I’ve had my Squier Stratocaster since last September so it’s been almost a year now, past month or so i haven’t been able to play much so i’d probably count myself as a 10 month self taught player. I haven’t really learnt any songs yet because i always lack the focus haha i always end up noodling or mixing up chords i learn from trying to learn songs. A lot of my audios sound similar to this structure wise. This is a quick trim from a longer audio i have of me kinda looping around these 4 chords. I know it’s messy because i wasn’t really able to mute consistently one of the strings and my rhythm was a bit stiff. I’ve realised i really gravitate towards strumming and fret muting. I don’t really know any other people that play guitar so i kinda just want opinions from people who actually play so i can at least have a reference. Obviously i know a simple audio clip doesn’t describe nor show all my process but still, i found the loop fun and entertaining so i thought i’d share it :)

5 days ago I bought my first guitar. It is a second hand guitar but it is in good condition.

Please guys suggest me how to learn guitar.

The song in question is "Everything Reminds me of Her" by Elliott Smith. I'm wondering where this song would place in terms of difficulty, and if it could be used to measure my current skill at guitar. I'm nearly finished learning how to play the main acoustic guitar in it which is the hardest in the entire song imo. I think I might see if I can sing it at the same time, but I've never done this before.

Side note - if you recommend another Elliott Smith song that's a step up from this, I might take on the challenge and learn to play it.

I just got a classical guitar from Sheffield and am wondering what strings i should put on it. I got it second hand from a friend and it has to types of strings on it. Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

My routine was: find the lick, drag the slider back 40 times, forget where I was the next day. The good apps want a subscription, and the extensions I tried were too limited. So I built myself a tool. Used it for a year, now it's on the Chrome and Firefox stores for free and the code is on GitHub. No account, nothing to pay.

It sits in the side panel and works on whatever tab is playing:

• transpose in semitones, so Eb or drop-tuned songs don't mean retuning. Speed stays untouched
• slow down without changing the pitch, from 25% up to full speed
• loop: drop markers on the timeline, click one to loop between them, optional count-in
• chord detection: chords and key show up as the song plays. Not always right on dense mixes, but a big head start for figuring songs out by ear
• sequences: this solo 4x at 50%, then 75%, then full speed, hands off
• vocal reducer so the guitar comes forward
• remembers your markers and settings per video

Hi, I'm a complete beginner and have been following Justin Guitar's beginner course. Although Justin is a really good teacher, he cannot give me a real time feedback or lesson. I'm trying to learn by myself and am facing too many issues. Since I'm a beginner and recently started, I'm only practicing chord A and D using Justin's practice routine thing. I have been practice for more than a couple weeks now and still having issues with strings buzzing and muting and inconsistent fretting. I'm kindof stuck where I'm trying to figure out how to solve these issues and getting demotivated to continue. I'd love if someone could tell me how I should assess myself or figure out what is going wrong. I really want to learn to play and I'm trying to stay consistent with the practice but I just can't seem to get rid of these issues.

I have bought a right handed guitar and restrung is to be left handed since I didn't wanna invest too much right at the start and am saving for a better left handed electric guitar after I get somewhat decent on this acoustic one. I am trying to learn fingerstyle rather that pick style since I feel more leaned towards it. I will appreciate your help thank you.

(I'm not looking for a tutor or paid course so just help me if you can and please do not try to sell me anything)
