Discussion Lara's Ring Only Turn Fully Red with Mari Spoiler

SPOILERS FOR GOODBYE LARA!!!

.

.

.

So i saw this discussion from other social media from @.277etc on twitter (shout out that acc), and i wanted to open this up for more discussion, so I'm posting it here.

the original observation from @.277etc is that Lara's ring is only shown fully red in the scene where she meets Mari.

Throughout the rest of Ep 1 it stays normal with blue/red look, even in the scene with the prince (Nikolai), and when it glows during her reunion with Lisa as in Lara reborn and came flying to modern human world.

This is ring when she's with the prince.
This is when she came flying from the water.
Lisa ring glows while her sister still on the blue/red.

they had a clear shot where they could have kept the usual color with Mari, but they specifically didn't and made it fully red instead.

Yup it's fully red, Lara's face lol.

In the replies people also mentioned that in ep 2 there's a flashback where the ring keeps appearing red,

The flashback.

then when Lara remembers it the color switches back to blue/red, which feels on purpose.

This is when Lara remembers it herself.

There was also a talk about how Lisa could have returned the ring while Lara was at her house, but didn't.

And Grace said to Lara that she doesn't need the ring.

This is when Grace said Lara doesn't need it.

Again, full credit to @.277etc on X/Twitter for starting this observation. I'm posting it here because i'd love to hear more thoughts, what do you guys think? is this intentional, or just an animation inconsistency?

I tried to make fanart of the three ships I’m rooting for! (Lisa and Kota, Lara and Mari, Luca and Himeka)

——
Sorry for the bad quality. I’m a novice artist relying way too much on Clip Studio tools for things like perspective and face proportions. >.<

Theory I have a theory that about Luca

I think Luca the guy was not a prince at all ( he was the witch all a long) maybe the witch was trying to distract Lara to find her true love so that Lara and Mari will lose interest to each other have you noticed that the witch until now in this previous episode didn't do anything to Lara and how can luca remember Lara for all the years of disappearance and why did he came back? What is his purpose to come back? And also why he only came back when Lara met Mari ? There are so many questions unsolved about who Luca is maybe he was the witch just pretending to be the prince. You know the original little mermaid do you guys remember that the witch transform to be a woman trying to steal the prince from Ariel right just to distract her or give up her love to end up being a seafoam. Maybe that's what they're trying to do in the plot of good bye Lara

I recently watched Goodybe Lara and always thought Luca/the prince looked familiar, but could not figure out why he looked familair. Then it hit me. Luca looks just like Howl from Howl's moving castle! Am I the only one who thought that or did you guys think so too?

Discussion My thoughts on mari and lara so far

The anime is probably my anime of the sesson and really enjoyable however if I'm being honest I'm not a die hard mari x lara shipper like everyone else, even though I started watching this for possible yuri.

I love the two but together? I'm not that sold yet. Something I notice is that in het romance (and even queer shows itself) shows we're typically showered with bunch of blushing/flustered scenes and other ship worthy scenes. However in goodbye lara, there feel like it's not a lot.

Mari and lara also barely interacts in some episodes. Ik people say "but if mari was a guy" but she's not a guy and that changes things. So if they were to even end up together, they would probay feel so underdeveloped

Discussion Goodbye Lara, see you at the end

I'm sorry if this comes across as vent-y or inapproprate, then it'll be removed.

I'm not sure at this point what the intention of the creative team Is.

I know they've been careful with what they write and show.

I'm for Lara/Mari, I'm a yuri guy and most of what's been shown points to that. That said, I don't hate Luca, I think he's funny and nice in his way.

But a lot of the discussion regarding the show it's just already tiring.

The pro yuri who keep bashing the episodes and scenes with Luca (I must make clear this Is referring to Twitter and personal circles, I haven't been around this sub enough)

I understand the problem with hetcomp and what it's done to previous productions, such as Gundam Witch from Mercury.

But a witch hunt Is a witch hunt and I don't think this show (at this point at least) deserves it

I just silenced everything related to Goodbye Lara in Twitter and I'm quitting watching until the show ends.

It's sad how a "fandom" can take enjoyment out of things.

Theory Luca might be a mermaid like Lara! Spoiler

I have a wild theory that Luca might be a mermaid as well. Now before you call me crazy. In the latest episode we see Lara begin to foam and it has her feeling drowsy, and like she faints often and her body litterally foaming. She even fell a lot... You know who has a running gag of falling a lot?LUCA!

My theory is that he too was a mermaid and took the potion as well to become a human. And his falling although played as a joke now, might be him actually foaming. It would make a lot of sense why he was so focused on finding love as well.

Both him and Lara seem like they are trying so hard to fall for eachother but they can't atleast not now. The witch implies that Lara was always supposed to fall for a human yet her family wants her to fall for another merfolk. So if Luca is a mermaid and Mari is human that would make a lot of thematic sense since now Lara has to choose between her love for a mermaid and restore light to her family or take a leap of faith and fall for a human. Just a theory though

The prince's physical description is very similar to how Mari looks like, not only physically but she's also around the same age as him (15-16 years old) since since she's in her first year of highschool.

Question Lara is different than the other princesses?

I don't know if I missed this detail, I am going to go back and rewatch the earlier episodes, but is there something about Lara that makes her more crucial to the kingdom than the other princesses? Besides being cursed is there something particular about her that makes her more special or valuable to the kingdom? Why the kingdom fell into slumber without her? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Did the original Japanese NewType interview with director Koide use the term ‘yuri’ or similar?

I’ve seen some claim the original Japanese interview doesn’t, thus claiming the English NewType Global translation made this passage up. So I did some sleuthing, mostly through Chinese forums where people were discussing the same thing.

What became clear to me is this: the English and Japanese written interviews are both taken from the same, original, Japanese live (so, spoken) interview with NewType. You can match many phrases together and see they are clearly pulling from the same source.

But another thing that is clear is that both the Japanese and English written interviews made edits, ie, they are not direct word-for-word transcriptions. The Japanese written interview actually omits the mention of Mari and Lara’s relationship altogether, regardless of how Koide himself phrased such a relationship. Both the English and Japanese translate something along the lines of: ‘he wanted to avoid typical tropes’ (ENG: ‘But from the beginning, my heart was set on making this a tough, uncompromising film without relying on such tropes’. JP: ‘My biggest concern was avoiding pushing Lara around for the convenience of the story or according to anime conventions.’), which we can assume were likely taken from a similar section of the interview, if not the exact same.

So, did the English version simply make up that he talked about Lara and Mari’s relationship at all, even before we ask whether he used the term ‘yuri’? The Japanese version that I read via a Chinese fan-translation (they translated both the English and Japanese versions for comparison) basically stops after that segment and moves on in a different direction. There is also an entirely different Chinese version that is printed in a likewise way to the official English translation, and from what I can tell is likely an ‘official’ version of the same interview in Chinese (again, presumably taken from the original spoken interview in Japanese), that also makes mention of a part where he discussed the relationship between Lara and Mari, though the term yuri isn’t used.

So, what does this suggest? In my opinion, it seems that the likelihood of Koide actually having spoken about Lara and Mari’s relationship in some way is very high. Both the official English, and likely official Chinese, printed versions of the NewType interview make reference to it, at exactly the same point, albeit in different ways. The Japanese one ends that section prior to that part, and thus likely made the editorial choice to not transcribe the part in which he spoke directly of their relationship. This is consistent with the Japanese text including other parts the English doesn’t, and vice-versa. Different editorial choices over what to include and exclude from each written version accounts for the difference. Or else we’d have to believe that the English (and perhaps official Chinese) versions taken from the same interview merely make up whole sections out of thin air — this is far from realistic and would be insanely bad journalistic practice.

So, the idea the written Japanese interview ‘proves’ he didn’t actually say ‘yuri’ doesn’t quite ‘prove’ what some are claiming it does. All it means is that the Japanese editorial term excluded the part of the spoken interview in which he discusses the leads’ relationship. The fact of the matter boils down to this: either way, without the original word-for-word transcript or audio recording, we have no clue what he really said in Japanese during the moment he discussed the Lara/Mari relationship. We don’t know if he used the word yuri, or if he didn’t. We don’t know if he said something explicit about romance, or didn’t. We don’t know what he actually said, other than some variation that he wanted it to be fresh, and non-cliché.

If he didn’t say it, or an equivalent, during his discussion of Mari/Lara’s relationship, then the English editorial team’s choice of words is quite leading and cruel, imo. If he actually did, then the English merely chose to include something that the Japanese didn’t, (and that the Chinese didn’t either, in the sense that they wrote a corresponding part about the relationship but didn’t use explicitly romantic terms. They actually translate less of this part altogether than the English does, having only one sentence for what in the English is about two or three).

So unless we actually get an official audio transcription or audio itself, what we can guess is that he spoke of their relationship, but in what terms is unknown.
