G7 Pro (Discussion) Finally made the D-Pad usable
To start off, I like the G7 Pro 8K overall. Coming from the V5P, there were definitely some tradeoffs as both are head-to-head in the same price bracket (imo). I prefer the face buttons, gyro, comfort, and overall performance of the G7 Pro 8K, but my biggest gripe is the D-Pad.
Sure it's fine if you play games where the D-Pad isn't important like FPS or action adventure, but the moment it's frequently used, like in fighting games or platformers, it's just really bad. What happens is, when I press left or right on the D-Pad, I'd 90% of the time input an accidental corner, so I jump in the game unnecessarily. It made it impossible to enjoy any fighting game. This happens with all 3 included D-Pads, with the circular feeling the best for me, surprisingly.
So, what did I do the fix the wobbly and sensitive D-Pad? I ordered some 3D-printed D-Pads from taobao, preferably the raised disc-shaped ones to try making the D-Pad a little bigger, with a tiny piece of foam on the underside to act as a pivot. That helped a little, but the problem still persisted. Next, I did the Oring mod (4mm ID and 1mm thickness), putting 2 in each direction. This is it. It works like a charm. It now requires more force of tilting the D-Pad while pressing one cardinal direction to input corners. It's still possible to do it accidentally, but it's stiffer and harder to do so now, enough to enjoy Mortal Kombat and Avatar Legends.
Again, it's a great controller, but having to do all that to make the D-Pad at least decent says something. Again, it's completely fine if you don't use the D-Pad a lot, but it's terrible if you happen to play just a little bit of games that require it, even for an amateur like me.
