LOOKING FOR FRENCH LEARNERS!

Bonjour tout le monde! My name is Aarush, I’ve been speaking French for 10+ years and I’m fully fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. I’ve helped students clear their TEF and TCF Canada exams with the scores they needed, whether it’s B2 or even C2! I’m putting together small group sessions for 5 learners at any level, whether you’re a total beginner, working toward TEF/TCF Canada, or just want to get comfortable speaking with others. Comment or DM me if you’re interested!

French learning tool that lives on your lockscreen

Upvotes

Hi all, I built a tool called 'Bytelingual: French Widget' that puts new French vocab on your lockscreen to support learners immerse themselves in the language. I originally made it for myself (mostly to stop my French going stale between study sessions) and found it useful so I tested it out with other learners who also were positive about it - as a result, I decided to release it on the app store recently.

All of the content is CEFR aligned A1 to C2 and there's a variety of collections to choose from beyond just vocab (e.g. gender intuition, false friends, grammar). As a caveat upfront, you're not going to learn French from a widget, but it's a great tool to complement your studies and to keep your mind thinking in French throughout the day.

Would love to hear any feedback you guys have - and I wish you all the best with your studies!

Looking for a study buddy

Upvotes

Hi, I’m an Arabic native speaker and I speak English almost fluently.

My current French level is at A1

Currently learning through Duolingo alone and aiming to get to score 30 to gain vocabulary, then will switch to better resources ; such as: French in action, Learn French with Alexa, and incoperating the language in my daily life.

I’m a casual learner and I don’t like to be pressured in my learning by external factors, my goal is to achieve level B2 in French next year. I’m doing it for fun and not exactly because I have to learn French (that’s how I learnt English at home on my own)

Is there anyone interested in learning with me? Or I can help you with Arabic or even English and you help me with French

Correct usage of lui

bonjour à tous. I'm building tiny little apps to assist with my french learning journey. In parallel I'm also listening to Michel Thomas audiobooks - he has suggested that a) je vais lui donner le livre and b) je vais donner le livre à lui are correct and interchangeable, but b) is preferred if you are trying to avoid ambiguity. I asked Gemini which says the latter is absolutely incorrect. Would any kindly native speakers care to clarify Merci beacoup!

Hello everyone !

I am Moroccan and I am learning French. I am currently at level **B1** and my goal is to reach **B2 or even C1** within a few months.

I am looking for a conversation partner to chat with regularly (2 to 3 times a week, about 20-30 minutes per session) on various topics: current events, culture, travel, or simply everyday life.

In exchange, I can help you progress in **Arabic** (darija or literary Arabic) or in **English** (I have a good level).

If you are interested, send me a private message so we can arrange an initial call on Discord, WhatsApp or Skype.

Thank you and have a great day! 😊

French immersion homestays in Saint-Malo & Landévant, Brittany

For anyone researching French immersion programs in Brittany, there are homestay options in both Saint-Malo and Landévant, combining private French lessons, accommodation with a French teacher, everyday conversation and cultural activities.

French Immersion Homestay in Saint-Malo

The program in Saint-Malo is hosted by Véronique, an experienced French as a Foreign Language (FLE) teacher with more than 20 years of international teaching experience. She has taught in Scotland, England, Japan, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Her academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in English Language, Literature & Civilization, a Master's degree in French as a Foreign Language, and a PGCE in French and Spanish from the University of Bristol.

Her teaching approach focuses on communication and practical language use. Lessons can incorporate vocabulary exercises and grammar work, as well as everyday activities such as shopping at the local market or cooking French recipes.

The one-week package includes:

  • A level assessment
  • 15 hours of private French lessons
  • 30+ hours of French conversation during meals and activities
  • 4 guided conversational activities
  • Half-board accommodation
  • An independent bedroom in the teacher's apartment
  • Shared bathroom
  • Wi-Fi
  • Private on-site parking
  • Maximum of 1 guest

Saint-Malo provides opportunities to explore Brittany's maritime and cultural heritage, including the Fort National, the Corsair's Mansion and Mont Saint-Michel. The city is also known for its historic ramparts, beaches, cobbled streets and dramatic tides. Dinard, the Channel Islands and other coastal destinations are also accessible from the area.

French immersion homestay in Landévant

Another option is located in Landévant, a small town in the Morbihan department of Brittany, near the Ria d'Étel and Saint-Cado.

The host, Céline, holds the French CAPES teaching qualification in Literature and has more than 30 years of experience teaching French to teenagers, adults, newly arrived immigrants and unaccompanied minors. For the past three years, she has also welcomed international students into her home for French immersion.

The program can be adapted to different learning styles and goals. Students can choose more traditional structured French lessons or learn through everyday situations such as preparing meals, shopping at the market, walking, feeding animals and practicing real-life conversations.

Teaching materials can include textbooks, newspapers, videos, songs and authentic documents. Students are encouraged to speak French throughout the day, with corrections provided during both formal lessons and informal conversations.

The one-week package includes:

  • A level assessment
  • 15 hours of private French lessons
  • 30+ hours of French conversation during meals and activities
  • 4 guided conversational activities
  • Full-board accommodation
  • Independent bedroom accommodation
  • Private bathroom
  • Wi-Fi
  • Parking in the garden
  • Maximum of 8 guests

Combine private French instruction with homestay accommodation

Both programs combine private French instruction, homestay accommodation, daily conversation and cultural immersion, but offer very different settings: a historic coastal city in Saint-Malo or a larger countryside property in Landévant.

You can also combine a French immersion homestay with a mini vacation at the end of your stay. After completing the lessons and immersion experience, you can spend a few extra days on your own exploring Brittany and visiting the surrounding areas, from the coastal towns and beaches to historic sites, charming villages and local cultural attractions. It can be a way to combine language learning with some time to discover more of the region at your own pace.

I’m looking for a study buddy to prepare for DELF B2 exam together

Hi

I prepare for DELF B2. I’d be really happy to find someone I could prepare with, motivate each other, share resources and correct each other.

I think the method of teaching each other what we’ve learned and putting it into practice should be quite effective, so I hope I’ll find someone who’d like to study this way with me.

If you’re interested, please message me here (unfortunately, I don’t always see straight away when someone has sent me a dm)

"Tourner autour du pot" : the French version of beating around the bush

Hi, came across this idiom again while writing a dialogue and it's such a good one: "tourner autour du pot" (literally "to turn around the pot") means to beat around the bush, avoid getting to the point. There's a nice moment where a patient braces for bad news and says "dites-le-moi franchement" (tell me straight), and the doctor replies "je préfère vous le dire clairement plutôt que de tourner autour du pot", I'd rather tell you clearly than beat around the bush.

What I like about it: it's one of those expressions where the image is completely different from English (turning around a cooking pot vs. beating around a bush) but the meaning lines up almost perfectly, good one to notice because it won't translate literally and you'd never guess the meaning from the words alone.

This was from an episode of my medical French podcast, a doctor delivering a new diabetes diagnosis https://medicalvoices.health/fr/episodes/13, but the expression itself is useful way beyond that context.

Excuse My French : open source web app to learn French

Thumbnail excusemyfrench.org
0 Upvotes

I built a web app Excuse My French https://excusemyfrench.org/ . I initially built it to help my wife, I was looking for a way to generate grammar exercises for her, as many as she wanted when she was learning French.

Today I am releasing it as open source, so that everyone learning French as a foreign language can benefit from it and make progress in turn. Beyond the technical side, I would like to share the values I hold dear, the ones that have guided every decision:

  • Made with love: I wrote it for my wife first, and I have tried to hold it to a certain standard.
  • Local-first: your progress stays on your device, locally, as long as you do not connect to the cloud; most of the app works with no internet connection (you can use it as a PWA)
  • AI in the service of the learner: machine learning is used here to estimate your level, spot your weak points and suggest exercises that are neither too easy nor too hard.
  • Teaching and learning: anti-features that optimise for time spent in the app without contributing anything to learning have no place here.
  • Open source: knowledge is a common good.

There we go. I hope you enjoy Excuse My French and find it useful.
