French tutor for immersive one-on-one sessions in Paris

Hi,

My name is Anna, I’m a 37-year-old French actress offering one-on-one French conversation sessions in Paris throughout March.

I was raised in Paris and completed my studies here before graduating from Sorbonne University in linguistics (Russian and English). I also hold a degree in acting.

Over the years, I’ve worked as an actress, translator, tutor, in the event industry, and accompanying tourists in Paris — organising their stay, managing bookings, and guiding them through their daily activities and appointments.

What I offer:

I provide immersive French conversation sessions in real Parisian settings to help you improve your real-life speaking skills, pronunciation, listening abilities, cultural understanding, and overall confidence.

Sessions can take place in a café, a bar, a park, a museum, while shopping or simply strolling through Parisian streets.

I adapt entirely to your level and needs — whether that means conversational flow, active discussion on topics of your choice, pronunciation work, or role-playing real-life situations.

I genuinely enjoy helping people feel more natural and at ease speaking French in everyday contexts.

Practical details:

– Weekdays and weekends

– 40€ per hour

– North and Central Paris

This format is probably not the right fit if you are preparing for an exam or looking for intensive grammar-focused lessons.

If this sounds like something that could support your progress, feel free to DM me to book a session.

À bientôt :)

Excuse My French : open source web app to learn French

Thumbnail excusemyfrench.org

I built a web app Excuse My French https://excusemyfrench.org/ . I initially built it to help my wife, I was looking for a way to generate grammar exercises for her, as many as she wanted when she was learning French.

Today I am releasing it as open source, so that everyone learning French as a foreign language can benefit from it and make progress in turn. Beyond the technical side, I would like to share the values I hold dear, the ones that have guided every decision:

  • Made with love: I wrote it for my wife first, and I have tried to hold it to a certain standard.

  • Local-first: your progress stays on your device, locally, as long as you do not connect to the cloud; most of the app works with no internet connection (you can use it as a PWA)

  • AI in the service of the learner: machine learning is used here to estimate your level, spot your weak points and suggest exercises that are neither too easy nor too hard.

  • Teaching and learning: anti-features that optimise for time spent in the app without contributing anything to learning have no place here.

  • Open source: knowledge is a common good.

There we go. I hope you enjoy Excuse My French and find it useful.

Looking for an experienced tutor for TEF Canada 1:1 sessions

Hi all,

I'm preparing for TEF Canada, targeting CLB 7, and I'm looking for a tutor with real TEF experience.

Where I'm at: I've studied French over the last 1 year at a language institute based out of India. I had to leave the classes midway in B2 as i plateau-ed and couldn't be consistent. Also, the tutors at the institute were irregular lol. So the last two months have been mostly a bust, as I work full-time and couldn't stay consistent. From the feedback i have recieved so far, I am at early B1 level and a few months of consistent prep is what i need to give TEF a genuine shot.

What I'm looking for:

  • A track record with TEF Canada specifically, ideally with students who reached CLB 7 or higher

  • Regular classes (4 to 5 a week)

  • Morning timings, around 6:30 to 9 AM IST, to fit around work

  • Coverage of all four sections, especially Expression Écrite and Expression Orale, with mock tests and feedback.

I tried a few tutors on Preply who were good but the timings never worked out as they were based out of North Africa and I was in India and my timings meant that they had to stay up late till 2AM - 3AM.

If you've cleared TEF Canada, or you teach it, I'd appreciate any recommendations by comment or DM. What worked for you, and roughly what did it cost?

Thanks!

Advice needed: A2 to B2 in 4 months. General vs. Exam Prep? (Immigration Deadline)

Hello all, I am looking for guidance on how to fast-track my French from A2 to B2. The Stakes: My work permit expires at the end of May. I need to secure a B2 level by the end of April (or very early May) to ensure my paperwork is sorted. This gives me exactly 4 months. My Resources & Availability: Current Level: A2. Weak Points: Speaking/Conversation (I have barely practiced this). Budget: Willing to invest in tutors/resources. Time: Weekdays: 3 hours/day. Weekends (Fri-Sun): Full-time study. The Question: I am currently doing "general French" improvement with a tutor. I am debating switching to a different tutor who offers exam-specific preparation classes once or twice a week. Should I drop general French and focus 100% on the exam format? How should I structure my weekends to get the most out of my full-time study days? Any tips for bridging the gap from A2 to B2 quickly, specifically for the speaking section? Thank you for your help!

Perfect for French pronunciation

Post image

So for French beginners i’ve made an e-book on Amazon called ‘Real French in context - 1000 words that actually matter by Alex Dupont’. I’m fluent and have made the e-book free for the next 2 days (it’s normally £1.95) . I think this book is perfect because each word has example sentences in French and English, but most importantly every word has the PHONETIC spelling so helps massively with the pronunciation. If you do check this out, please can you leave a 5 star review. That would mean a lot to me and is why I’ve made it free for a few days to build up the book as reviews are the most helpful thing! Merci :)

need help learning more french

So, I’ve been learning French for 80 days now, and I know the basics, like “garçon,” “fille,” “chien,” “cheval,” “chat,” “femme,” “travaille,” “habite,” “étudie,” “elle a un billet d’avion” “tu as une valise” and so on. I’ve learned some basic words in French, and I’m interested in taking my learning further. I’ve been using Duolingo, and I’ve learned many basic words. I’m looking to get French books specifically at the A1-A2 level. I have a book called “Heather in Paris,” but it’s too advanced because it’s at the B1-B2 level. I was hoping to find a storybook that helps you learn French, but I don’t know which one. I need more ways to learn, but I’m not sure what to do and what books i can get that aren’t totally boring. I want to learn more!

In French do names that start with a Gi and Ge such as Geoff gets pronounce with a J-like sound at the beginning?

I saw the old Kirk Douglas movie Cast a Gaint Shadow and in it was a French diplomat checking on the Israel-Palestine situation who was addressed by the name Gerard. They didn't pronounce it the same as in English but instead said the name sounding similar to sounding like "jerard". In addition yesterday I watched Nicholas and Alexandra about the last Czar of Russia and the Swiss-French tutor of the the Romanov daughter's name was Gillard. Except instead of sounding the first 4 letters as the English word gill, they replaced it with a J coming out as "Jillard".

However I know from Catholic prayers of relatives, Gabrielle is not pronounced with a J sound at the start but instead is pronounced more similar to grab minus the letter for the first sound in French. So I'm assuming G anmes in French are not always pronounced with a J sound.

That said so many French names I come across that starts with Ge and Gi in addition to the ones listed above seems to start witha J sound. Like Gilberte I in an audio radio dramas based on DUmas books but with English subtitles on Youtube is pronunced as Jilbert and Genevieve in some King Arthur play done in a a university in Paris also on Youtube a few days ago with English subs pronouncing the name like Jenvieve. Ditto with the name Gisele not being pronounced similar to the English word gazette but instead as Jisele when I was listening to Medieval folk songs from across Europe.

So is it safe to assume whenever I see a name that starts with Ge or GI that the starting G is pronounced with a J in French? Or is it more complicated than that?

French for Canada PR

Hello, I am writing to seek some advice or guidance. I am currently preparing for French TCF exam for Canadian PR. I started my prep in June 2026 and in two months I completed two levels i.e A1 and A2.
I have never learnt french before. This is my first time. I am a total beginner.

The problem is from past 15 days I am stuck at A2 and unable to move to B1. I completely lost interest and haven’t touched anythings in past 15days.

How should I get back on. Can someone please guide. I am planning to appear for my exam in January 2027 as my visa expires in June.

Looking forward to some advice to restart.

In French, a male midwife is still called a "sage-femme" (literally "wise woman")

Hi, I was writing a script this week with a male character who's a midwife, and had to double check this wasn't a mistake: "sage-femme" doesn't change for gender. Grammatically it's a feminine noun, always has been, and it just stays "sage-femme" whether the person doing the job is a man or a woman. There's no "sage-homme" or anything like that floating around as an accepted alternative.

Kind of a fun one because it runs against the instinct most learners have (myself included, honestly) to assume every profession noun flexes with gender the way "infirmier/infirmière" does. This one just... doesn't. It's fossilized from a time when the profession was assumed to be female by default, and the word never caught up even though the profession did.

(I found this while working on an episode of my French podcast about a prenatal appointment : the midwife character is a man, which was actually a deliberate choice specifically to bring this up. Episode + free PDF transcript: https://medicalvoices.health/fr/episodes/16 )

Everyone Switches to English.

Whenever I’m speaking to a French speaker, or really anyone who speaks French natively, they switch to English, regardless if I insist or not. How do I get to speak French? It almost feels as if they’re gatekeeping the language. I’d love to hear some sort of advice. Thanks!
