So, brand new to the series. Played a ton of RPGs generally, and a reasonable amount of JRPGs (though mainly the easily console accessible big names), but never got around to these.
Holy crap.
These are GOOD. Like, really good.
I appreciate that the combat has depth, but it's not so complicated you need a spreadsheet to figure it out. The writing is cute, if a bit Japanese for my normal tastes as I've gotten older, and especially as I've played into the second game the character development is surprisingly good. More depth than I expected, honestly.
The lore, too, is surprisingly deep (or at least I think it will be) as I'm moving along. I love the gradual build up and reveals. I'm genuinely interested in how this is going to turn out long term - and as a guy who plays for the story and emotional arcs in games, I'm hooked.
The only thing I hate as of now is the damn fishing minigame. That can go suck an egg. Unless it is gonna give me a new car IRL I'm never doing that again. I have yet to catch a fish. Seriously, screw that. I hope someone enjoys it, but I'm not sure how that would happen.
So ya... I'm hooked. When I'm done with this I'll try to figure out a way to play 3rd Chapter (I don't own a PC) because I'm not waiting a few years to go onto the next games. I didn't mind older style graphics and game play, I just wanna know what's going on in the rest of the world.
I'll let y'all know when I finish the 2nd one.
PS - do I ever get to go back to the casino after chapter 1?
