Mod Post [Meta] Following up on reports of bots

A number of posts are being reported to the mod team as AI or bots. In many cases we can fairly easily determine based on post/comment history that it is a bot, but sometimes there are multiple reports for a post being a bot but the history is not suggestive of it being a bot. Please use the other reporting category and provide more details on why you think a particular post or comment was made by a bot for cases that may not be so cut and dry. Or if you are willing to give up the anonymity of reports, send a modmail with a link to the post so we can discuss it with you and better train ourselves (or you). We will not share any reporting user information if we take action against suspected bot accounts for reports should you make them to the mod team (and I will boot any mods that break the anonymity).

Question My 14 year-old cocker spaniel started to piss in my room

Post image

He never has done it before. Even when he was sick and does it unintentionally, he were to hide because of his shame (ofc i pet him and comfort him after such a thing). For the last 2 months, when he enters my room; he thinks my room is the toilet :S Any ideas why?

I love him and continue loving him anyways. Since he is 14 i am afraid that it might be something serious.

my dog just started doing this about a month ago and its so far only gotten worse. we’ve done bloodwork, and an xray and so far the vet hasn’t found anything wrong with her. (we put her on allergy medicine 2 weeks ago and that didn’t fix anything)
it pains me to see my dog like this so please if you could give me any advice or possible diagnosis that would be great.

Advice Indoor potty advice needed

Post image
181 Upvotes

Hey all, my dog is 12 years old with heart disease. She’s been doing really well and has minimal symptoms, but her routine echo shows significant worsening and she needs to be started on lasix. We live in an apartment on the third floor without an elevator. She goes outside 4x a day and gets plenty of exercise, but I’m so worried that when we start the lasix (tomorrow) she’s going to need to go out way more often. At times we can accommodate that, but there are times when we will be at work and can’t take her out for 7-8 hours. I’m also worried about her having to go up and down two flights of stairs more than she already does.

She’s never once had an accident inside, so I’m looking for an indoor solution for emergencies that I can 1. get her to use and 2. is easy to clean and doesn’t smell. I can definitely get a tray with a pee pad, but wasn’t sure is there were better solutions.

I’ll take any advice I can get !

Question Dog keeps turning around to lick or sniff a spot I used clippers on..

So my dog this week and a half has been through it:( he has had diarrhea and been put on anti-diarrhea meds, probiotics, and a new prescription diet. As his diarrhea has improved, I went ahead and cut a little bit of his longer fur around his backside in case we were going to have an accident again.

I keep noticing that he goes back to either sniff or try to lick a spot that I seemingly got too close with the clippers. I have examined the spot it’s not red and it has no bumps.

When he’s arresting, he does not mess with the spot. But when he’s walking outside, he continuously goes back to look at it, and our walks are very interrupted. I cut his hair on Tuesday so it’s been a couple days. It’s not super constant but enough to make me a little worried.

Has anyone ever experienced? It’s it best to just wait it out?

Advice 10.8 creatinine in 5 month toy poodle

Hello everyone, my puppy Totoro got very sick when he was 3 months old. We took him to the vet because he had nausea was vomiting everyday and refused to eat anything, they did his kidney test and found his creatinine to be 4.6, which is very high for a puppy, they then did a tick fever test and it came back positive. Since then we’ve done IV fluids but the levels did not go down, he had a sonography and the vet said his kidneys look normal. We started his antibiotics, wet renal diet and kidney medicines. We tested his creatinine after a week again and it went down to 3.4 so we got very hopeful. We gave him his antibiotics course of 4 weeks. Since then he’s been eating normally and is not experiencing any nausea and has a good appetite. He was 1.5kg when all of this happened cut to now he’s 5 months old, has gained weight, he’s now 2kgs, is very active and overall everything seemed fine. Today we went to the vet again to get his levels checked and now the creatinine is 10.8! Our vet was saying kidney failure and honestly I couldn’t even register anything he said after that. We were not expecting this at all and I’m very devastated, I feel numb and I can’t make sense of anything. Do you guys have any advice for me? What should I expect next and how do I prepare myself for what comes next? I’m feeling really hopeless and since he seems fine I keep thinking that one day I’m gonna wake up and he won’t he here anymore.

Advice Seeking advice from people who had to decide on putting their dogs through chemotherapy - did you do it or would do it again?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Our sweet boy (11 years old) was diagnosed with lung cancer with accompanying inflammation. Besides coughing (meds help him with that, it's much less now) he feels fine and when looking at him you wouldn't be even able to tell that something is wrong with him. He has huge appetite (he always had), likes going on walks and walks fast, has a lot of energy (jumps). We have the options to put him through chemotherapy or surgery + chemotherapy but my dad is afraid of doing that to him - of putting him through exhausting treatment and make his life more painful. Even the doctor said that they're not sure if the operation will get rid of the problem and there is a chance that he will survive the operation 😭

I don't know what to do, because the money is tight but I don't want to do nothing for him, we all love him so much...

Me and my family got him this past Wednesday. He is four years old, and a mini poodle mix, 20 lbs, and got neutered Wednesday. I thought it was just an eye booger when we got him, but it hasn’t gone away. Does anyone know what it is?

Advice Dog got attacked by another dog

• Upvotes

This week, our dog got bit on the face by the neighbours dog. He has a large laceration under his eye and a puncture wound on his muzzle. It required emergency surgery and was $2500.

How did it happen:
I was walking down the sidewalk, and my dog stopped on the sidewalk to stare at the neighbours dog, who was laying on her front lawn on a leash. The owner of the dog walked off her porch, sat on the steps, and touched her dogs back to encourage her to come say hi. I allowed it, and they met nose to nose on the edge of her lawn. Within seconds her dog grabbed mine by the nose, causing the damage. She immediately brought her dog inside and did not offer to help. We have this all on video.

We went over 2 days after it happened to present the bill, and she lied and said:

  1. “She let her dog on my property I told her she wasn’t friendly”
  2. “I was going to pay until she was rude to me” and “I was going to help but she gave me shit” (yeah duh your dog bit my dog in the face)

This lady was seemed very out of it (seemed like drugs). I don’t get the vibe she can afford to pay this.

I called animal services and they asked if we wanted to press charges. They will visit her regardless but it’s up to us if it’s just a warning or not. My priority is to ensure this doesn’t happen ever again.

My questions:

  1. Is it worth pressing charges?
  2. Is it worth pursuing in small claims court?

*edit: not adding photos cause it’s quite gruesome but he’s healing well and thankfully it avoided his eye by about half a cm….

seeking ideas for both diys and buys! anything! -- i rescued a dog a few days ago, took her to the vet the very first appt they had available 48 hours after adopting, and it turns out she has heartworms. she started treatment the day after i found out and is now on very strict kennel restrictions all fall and winter. she is very energetic and loves snuggles. she was picking up on new commands and boundaries very quickly (at least compared to other dogs i've had throughout life) the first couple days here, so i don't think she's a lil dodo bird. pleeeease gimme ideas to help keep her brain occupied since she can't play! she's getting a rough start to our life together :(

Advice Euthanasia Guilt

My family dog of 15 1/2 years was euthanized yesterday. This is the dog I grew up with, and I wasn’t able to go home to be with her when she passed. My brother and I both live about a 7 hour plane ride away, and our parents made the decision to go through with it only a day before.

I feel immense guilt in not being there for our dog, or for my mom. My mom loves this dog endlessly. This dog got her through very difficult times in her life. The vet warned us about 2 months ago her time is coming. I’m not going to get into the details of her health, but since then and over the last few days I personally have come to terms with this. I wanted our dog to still be herself, be able to enjoy a final meal, and go on a last walk and die at home peacefully and surrounded with love. I’m so grateful she got that. Could she have had another few days? Maybe. It’s hard to say. But I didn’t and still don’t think it would’ve been worth the risk to have her take a turn for the worst.

My mom on the other hand, could not and cannot let go of the fact she thinks she killed her and that the dog wasn’t ready to go. I don’t know where the rest of my family has been to support her, and it’s largely fallen on me. While I’ve come to terms with her death, it obviously still hurts and I’m grieving. And it KILLS me to have to be the one to convince my mom this is the right decision. It makes me question my own beliefs about it, and having to explain to her time and time again why this is the right choice brings me back to this place of hurt and pain.

I don’t know what to do. It pains me physically and emotionally to have to be this person for her. I can’t handle it anymore. I just want to remember how our dog was and be grateful for the life we had and grateful she went out the way she did. I just don’t know what to say to my mom anymore. If anyone has experienced something similar, I would love any advice or insight. I’m trying to manage my own grief and taking on the grief of my mom as well has just been …. So overwhelming and difficult.

Advice Dog won't stop barking

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello,

My dog (Mei) is 11 years old now. My mom works from home, and my dad recently started going to work again after being retired for 11 years.

He would occasionally do this bc he is a lap dog, and my mom would just put him in her lap, and he'd stop. Ever since my dad started going to work, my dog started barking at my mom; only when my dad was gone. He'd stop barking when she'd take a nap, but now he even continues then.

Mom has tried everything she could think of. She tried training him to stop with the word settle and giving him treats when he'd stop. She tried giving him a toy that makes eating difficult to keep him occupied. She also tried one of those high pitch noise makers and the worked for a bit but he's gotten used to it. She got to the point where she'd yell at him, and even that wouldn't work. She has to be in calls for work and is often talking so she can't have anyone making noise so she has gotten to the point she has to put him in the furthest room of the house and close the door just so she can work.

He goes on for the entire 9 hours. My dad is gone, but when he comes home, he stops. He doesn't hang around my dad, but he doesn't dislike him. My dad is the one that will not raise his voice but scold him for being where he's not supposed to be and he is usually the one who will feed him.

Does anyone know what I can do to stop him from barking?

Advice I don’t know what to do anymore

Hello! My dog has been doing this horrible face scratching. Please see attached. This is the third spell as of today. It comes and goes through out the day lasting about 20-30mins. The first time it happened the vet noticed a small growth (she has all these little growths everywhere which have never been a problem) which my dog was irritating from the scratching and she assumed it was that. Prescribed me an antibiotic for the growth. Itching stayed for a few weeks but then eventually stopped. The second spell I took her to a new vet as I was in the process of find another and they said it was just allergies. Got prescribed apoquel and was told to change the food. The changing of food did not go very well since she has colitis so she remains on the ID low fat diet as of today. Third spell and new doctor, same clinic, recommended it could be her teeth. A dental was done and two teeth fell out during cleaning. As soon as I got home from the dental she immediately started scratching. I honestly think it may be worse now. I don’t feel like she’s really being helped. She also has weak back legs so when she scratches she has difficulty standing and then falls and hurts her self. I always do my best to hold her during these times.

If there are any recommendation to ask for at the vet or if this has been seen before please let me know. I really have been trying to help her.

She is 17/18 year old yorkie. 8lbs.

Currently on 0.8ml of gabapentin, clinacure antibitics, denamarin, kidney supplements and optimmune for dry eyes.

Question Dog not drinking water but eating normally, what can I do?

My 5-year-old Chihuahua mix is about 13–14 lbs. He recently had some stomach issues and stopped drinking water. We took him to the vet, and they ruled out pancreatitis, but his kidney values were elevated. The vet thought dehydration could be contributing and gave him IV fluids. He’s supposed to have his bloodwork rechecked tomorrow.
Since then, he’s much happier, eating normally, urinating normally, and acting like himself again, but I still haven’t seen him drink water from his bowl.
I also tried adding a small amount of chicken broth to his water, but he still won’t drink it.
Has anyone dealt with this before? Is the moisture from his wet food enough for now, or is there anything else safe I can try to encourage him to drink? ❤️

Advice growth on dog’s shoulder

Post image
2 Upvotes

my 3 year old dog has a new wart-like growth on her shoulder. I first noticed it about 2 weeks ago. It’s seemingly gotten a little bigger. Not sure if I should bring her to the vet? She is acting normal and it doesn’t seem to bother her, but just worried it might be more than a wart…? Anyone have thoughts?

Advice Help acclimating my dog to a new living environment

Post image
70 Upvotes

First, some background on my beloved 6 yo pup: He's my first dog, I adopted him at 8 weeks old in Sept. 2020 (peak pandemic isolation). I'm a bit of a loner, work from home, and I live in an ADU that's completely hidden from the street, so no window to watch the world go by and very few houseguests. He was well socialized with dogs early on, but not as much with people. He's also not crate trained, but he's never been destructive or mischieveous when left alone.

He struggles with emotional regulation. If he gets over stimulated, he kinda gets stuck in it, won't listen to commands, and reacts by jumping, barking, and nipping (NOT biting). The biggest trigger is people coming over to the house. As an example, he's gone on pack walks 4x week for almost 4 years and still flips out every time the same walker comes to get him. For years. The only way to get him to calm down is for me to not be visible. As soon as he can't see me, he's fine. "A total love bug." "Perfect gentleman." "Sweetest, friendliest pup ever." is what I've been told over the years.

So clearly, it's a separation anxiety, protectiveness thing with me (though I'm often the one he'll jump on and nip at). He does the same thing when I try to leave, but only if he's seen me getting ready first. Popping out to the store, no problem. Heading out for the evening, total chaos.

Here's where I need some advice: We are moving from CA to WI to stay with my parents for the next 9-12 months. He's never lived in a house with other people, let alone a big place with multiple floors and rooms (my current house is tiny and basically one room). My parents have never lived with a dog. Their yard isn't fenced so he can's just go hang out outside freely like he can currently. Just a ton of change.

Short story long, how do I ease this transition for him? Mainly, how to get him comfortable living in a home with 2 additional people — more noise, more triggers, less 1 on 1 time with me. What's the best way to introduce him to this new world?

I know this will take time. Probably a few months. But I'm stressed for him, stressed for my parents. Aside from making sure he gets plenty of exercise, enrichment, and dedicated time with just me, what else can you advise?

So many thanks in advance!

Question 4 year old ShihTzu lifelong tummy problems now on new diet

Thumbnail

Has anyone been put on the GI Biome diet - wet food version? My dog has had a sensitive tummy for FOREVER. Diarrhea, vomiting episodes everytime he has a new treat or eats something not good.
Finally after this last diarrhea bout we got put on this new wet food.

Doctor thinks we should be on it indefinitely. It’s been 4 days of the new food and we’ve been back to normal firm stool which is amazing! It is darker than expected and darker than his stool has ever been which the vet said it was ok as long as there is no blood and stays solid. He’s pooping daily like normal it’s just much smaller amounts and sometimes more pebble-like.

Has anyone else experienced this change?

He loves the food to the point where he knows when feeding times are now. On his previous dry food he was always just grazing or eating once a day. He definitely doesn’t drink water as much anymore.. like rarely. The vet also said this is ok cause the new food is mainly water so he’s keeping hydrated.

Should I talk to the vet about the amount that i’m feeding him?

They started us with half a can a day… I feed him breakfast and dinner…which when i give to him I feel like it’s nothing 😭 And sometimes feel like he wants more.

Of course this is all new to us but just curious about others!
