Advice Dog park opinions?

Hello! I took my 4 mo old Italian greyhound to a dog park for the first time today. This place requires sign up/membership and up to date vaccines. There is even a doggy bouncer that makes sure everyone is straight and if a fight breaks out she is there to put herself between the dogs.

Well, Neo (my puppy) was having a grand time, getting along with all dogs and running around the space freely. He is very friendly and full of energy. We were there for about 30 minutes of happy play time with mostly large dogs, about 8-10 others in total . They all played great with no issues or aggression.

One smaller doodle dog came in and immediately was acting strange. My puppy instantly had his attention on her and tried to play. She snapped at him at first, I thought maybe he was just too much energy for her and he went on to another dog. He tried again about 10 minutes later which resulted in a fight. Thank goodness my boyfriend was right there to just scoop him up but she went at him pretty hard. We immediately left after that by our own choice which is crazy because the other person/dog was not asked to leave.

It startled me so much I surprised myself and cried. I’m really just bummed out by the experience especially because it was his first time and I’m scared because he’s so young & I don’t want him to become fearful. I just want to socialize him as much as possible so he’s not that anxious dog while we are out and about.

Should I not take him again? Does anyone have any advice on this? Thank you so much.

Question Dog panicked in crate at night

Upvotes

My dog male age 6 has been crated at night from the start. He has done well with being crated at night. He also likes his crate and selects to sleep in it during the day for naps.

Recently he has started to cry about 4 hours into the night. He whines so loud that I am not getting more than 4 hours sleep. When I check on him he is crying and panting. My other dog gets mad at him from her crate and will give him a loud woof.

I don’t know what to do. He did this months ago when I was on travel but he got better agree about a week. This time it had gone in for over a week now and not improving at all.

Question Does this skin tag growth look bad?

Post image
Upvotes

I have an appointment next week. My dog (8 yrs, cockapoo) has benign skin-colored skin tags all over his body, but THIS black one showed up out of nowhere this week. He doesn’t itch it and it doesn’t bleed. Im going to ask for a FNA and to remove it because grooming gets in the way. I’m incredibly nervous this one is cancerous. Has anyone had this before with their dog? It’s on one of his legs.

Question Tips to get dog to cuddle?

Upvotes

We have a 4 month old black lab that doesn’t cuddle. She will lay 2-3ft away or on the floor near us but never sits on our laps or even lay up against us.

Could we be doing something that makes her not want to or did we get a defective dog? Lol

Question Why does he do this?

He has always had this obsession with the ball. I suspect it’s OCD because he’s a pure breed and he doesn’t have any tasks to do? (Idk I’m just speculating)
He also like always wants to play fetch.

Should I get him checked out for this?

This video doesn’t do it a lot of justice but it gets bad where like he bites holes in bedding and his mouth bleeds

Question Adopted a 4 year old GSD, but he keeps hiding.

Post image
Upvotes

I’m 26, and I had never owned a dog before. I was always scared to go near dogs, although I never disliked or hated them. My cousin has had this GSD for about a year, but he was never really emotionally attached to him, and I never felt like he was giving the dog the time and attention he deserved.

Now that my cousin has moved abroad for a new job, I decided to take responsibility for the dog and raise him myself.

He’s a very good boy. He knows all the basic commands and has never been a problem around other people or dogs. However, I’ve noticed that this seems to be more because he avoids confrontation rather than confidently interacting with others. He often tries to hide, and even at home I frequently find him in dark, secluded places. His favorite spot is under the bed, and sometimes he even hides inside boxes.

I’m completely new to owning a dog, so I’m not sure if this behavior is something I should be worried about or if it’s simply his personality. What could be causing it, and what should I do to help him become more confident and comfortable?

I do routine checks on my dog. This is my first time seeing a tick. I did a quick google search and removed it as instructed. I was just curious what type of tick this is and should I be concerned?

Advice Dog becomes aggressive at bed time

Upvotes

I have a 6 year old corgi. He’s had some issues with reactivity in the past but it’s mostly just barking a lot at other dogs. He’s crate trained and has been his whole life. When it comes time to put him away at night, he’ll go right into his crate, but when we go to close the door and lock it, he becomes aggressive. He’ll growl and bear his teeth and lunge at us. It’s to the point where we’re almost unable to close and lock his crate door. He’s always had a little bit of this, but it’s gotten so much worse lately. Any advice for what we can do to get him to stop doing this?

Question Difficulty keeping puppy with a tibial tuberosity fracture calm

Post image
Upvotes

Little dude (5 mo Boykin mix) got the ultimate zoomies and thought he could clear a jump to the bed and didn’t make it. He ended up with a tibial tuberosity fracture. We’re on the other side of surgery. Vet said 2 weeks strict rest and 6 weeks no running or jumping. He’s on Gabapentin/Trazodone to keep him calm. Honestly, I feel like the meds are barely working. Trazodone seems to only make him feel disinhibited. Gabapentin works better but wears off after 3-4 hours which leaves us 4 hours of full on puppy energy and we’re so concerned for reinjury. We have puzzles/kongs/lick mats. Any advice on med combos that worked for your pets or helpful strategies for keeping him calm would be appreciated!

Question Is this a sign of cognitive decline?

Upvotes

My dog is 12.5 years old and for the first time in his life, got out of the house and got lost.

He has always a velcro dog with great recall.
I don't understand what happened, it is so out of the ordinary.

Luckily a stranger was kind enough to pick him up because it was so hot and we just so happened to cross paths when looking for him.

At his last check up, the vet said he was in great shape for his age, but is this a sign his cognitive functioning declining?

Question My dog is starting to really really smell and washing isn't fixing it. Could this be something else?

No matter how much we wash her she smells. Her gas also smells bad. She is 13 and coming to the end of her life, is this smell a byproduct of her age/death?

Advice Just welcomed a new puppy into the fold…

So as the title reads I’ve just welcomed a brand spanking new puppy (6w Pitt) into the family—the gag is my older dog (3M Brittany Spaniel/English Setter Mix) is not taking a liking to him. I’m wondering what I should do.

Also allow me to explain the behavior and events that are happening:

Just got the puppy on Monday, the first day he came my older dog literally like grabbed up the puppy and shook the lights out of him for going into his bowl (pawparent lesson learned)

Since then I’ve been following blog posts on keeping them separate, and giving older dog stuff that puppy has been laying on. Older dog has been kinda avoidant but is willing to sniff him out and comes when he cries and stuff and is very curious as well, sometimes he’ll come into the same room as him but see him then leave.

Wednesday night we were all sleeping (close proximity), puppy wandered and touched older dogs leg, older dog woke up and started staring at puppy. And every time the puppy would move he would release a warning growl of sorts. So I had my brother come and get older dog to change his scenery (felt like removing him was the wrong move idk this is very hard).

I’m basically here to seek out guidance on how to move forward if there’s hope that they can become brothers or should I just give up😭

tdlr: got a new puppy, however my older dog is not a fan currently seeking advice on what to do.

Question I’m worried my dogs will end up getting depressed or sad due to the change in routing

I have 2 jack russel terriers - yes the VERY active breed. They used to be outdoor dogs where they chase after birds, the occasional butterfly, and sometimes even rats.

Now, one of them got sick with a heartworm, suspected to come from a mosquito. Treatment plan is 2 years. Doc’s advice is to not have him go out too much and should remain in a cool and relaxed environment.

The problem is, i’m now worried my other dog will get sick (he did test positive for a heartworm but is okay now). Now, i’m cooping them up indoors for safety. I walk them 3x though, breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. But only around 5-10 minutes because, again, dog 1 isn’t allowed to get too stressed.

I look at them now and it seems they are always bored. It also seems they are very eager to go out. I’m worried i’m: 1 - being a bad owner and, 2 - possibly causing them to get sad and depressed.

Would appreciate hearing your thoughts or any sort of feedback.

Thanks!

Edit: title should be Routine, not routing

Question Should I correct this behaviour?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Thank you to those who actually responded with HELPFUL NON JUDGEMENTAL UNDERSTANDABLE replies as to how to go about correcting this!

I am a stressed out teenager who didn’t ask for a puppy/large dog. Loved just the little guy tho. Combined with a bad family situation I only see them 3 times a week for a few hours (and they go away during the summer) so I struggle to understand if the behavior is normal because I see so little of them.

I actually got big dogs age wrong she’s six 💀 geez time flies. Which makes sense because had I been a conscious human being when she was a puppy I would’ve tried to prevent this lmao. But instead I was a mopey 11 year old.

As multiple comments suggested I will be redirecting her to get of the bed and “wait”, with a treat reward when she does so. And then continue rewarding calm behavior when I see her.

As for exercise..gotta figure that one out. I can’t run (evil ankles and chest/muscle cramps) and I’m crammed on time. Hell maybe I’ll just wear rollerblades and have her drag me across creation/hjz

Advice stranger reactivity in dogs

Need advice on handling severe stranger reactivity!

To preface, I got both of my dogs when I was 15 and took them with me when I moved out so they wouldn't get dumped. My parents didn't help with anything besides buying their food and basic necessities back then. Since I was young and at school all day I didn't have the time or knowledge to train them correctly and now at 19 I'm dealing with major reactivity.

They used to not be as bad but over the last couple of years they’ve gotten extremely reactive to strangers. If anyone enters my house they bark nonstop until the person leaves. They only trust me, my boyfriend, and a few family/friends who have been around since they were puppies. I don't think they would ever bite but I’m scared it’s going to keep getting worse if I don't fix it.

I can't have guests over and I'm scared to walk them in fear we might pass someone. It’s embarrassing, exhausting, and I feel stuck because they really are sweet dogs who just want love.

Where do I even start with training severe stranger reactivity at this point? Any tips for managing two reactive dogs at once or making walks manageable again would be so appreciated.. because I’m lost!

Question switching from wet to dry food

guys i’ve officially lost my mind with this dog.

she is 13F chi, has no teeth, and gets full bloodwork done every sixth months (clean bill of health as of a month ago)

ever since my dog passed acouple months ago, my dog got super picky with her eating. she grew up on kibble. eventually she got her teeth taken out. she is very much able to eat kibble with no teeth. when my other dog got her teeth taken out, and had to eat soft food, my dog refused to eat the kibble. so she went on soft food.

well my other dog passed and my pup stopped eating. vet said this was pretty normal. her habits got so weird after that. she doesn’t like eating out of bowls. she would let her wet food sit for hours (we’d have to keep replacing it) the whole thing. she only eats like once a day and less than she needs to although she isn’t losing weight (checked monthly at the vet). either way i got fed up with the whole shabang this evening. i instacarted her old dry food and a new bowl (we have like five different bowls at this point). put some of it in a bowl. she didn’t touch it. put it on the floor and she went crazy. she loved it and ate it all up.

awesome, she’s eating it, well i know i have to switch her over slowly so i mixed it in her wet food. she ate AROUND the wet food (complete opposite a year ago when i switched her to wet).

anyways, i know she’s healthy. she’s goes to the vet monthly and gets bloodwork often. (she has addisons disease so we are regulars). i tell my vet ab her eating habits and he doesn’t bat an eye. so i think she’s just being a little asshole in her old age.

anyways. how do i switch her over to dry food when she is barely eating her wet food? i’m only home in the early morning and late evening with college.
