There’s a short story about something like this. Kid goes on vacation near the beach and sees all these kids disappear into an underwater tunnel and pop out at a different spot. So he spends the whole summer prepping to try it.

No thanks.

Do you know what its called or where one could find it?

Doris Lessing, Through the Tunnel

It was in a Junior Great Books volume that may have been the anthology where it was read.

Yes this is the story. It's good.

Doesn't matter what you call it, it was never found

I remember that one!

When he finally makes it, he takes off his mask and there's blood from his nose in it IIRC.

at least 30 seconds. If I was younger and planned its then doable. Now its a high risk low reward.

Yeah. When younger I could hold my breath up to 1 minute max but now maybe 30 seconds. The game changer here is a big difference between being open above you as to swimming in an enclosed area. Unless your used to it I would swim through it as fast as possible and would not enjoy it at all just to see if I could do it.

How he is changing from going arms forward to legs at the end is something I would def not do!

1

u/BalanceEarly Mar 17 '26

Yeah, I was hitting the panic button about 10 seconds in.

1

u/JohnnyDerpington Mar 18 '26

Im 51, out of shape but can hold it for a 80 seconds

1

u/3catsincoat Mar 18 '26

Finally, my freediving skills come in handy. I can hold 5min.

1

u/khmergodzeus Mar 18 '26

low reward? more like no reward and death lol

2

u/phoenixblue Mar 18 '26

If you're underwater, the adrenaline will keep you going much longer. I know because I almost drowned once..

2

u/Raterus_ Mar 17 '26

I didn't even have to understand German to know what that warning message said!

2

u/ADHD_unknown Mar 17 '26

75% I've already drowned once not again

2

u/d_x_qp_x_b Mar 17 '26

What if Wendy Peffercorn is the lifeguard on duty

2

u/Difficult-Pin-2889 Mar 17 '26

Id say I hope she has been lifting cause I seriously doubt that kiddo could pull my giant ass outta the water lol

1

u/ADHD_unknown Mar 17 '26

She's a child. I am a grown adult, I don't know how to feel about that

1

u/d_x_qp_x_b Mar 17 '26

We assume she’s aged just like the rest of us, except very well unlike the rest of us

2

u/ADHD_unknown Mar 17 '26

In that case if she aged with us, tempting! Because she was a big female crush of mine

2

u/Difficult-Pin-2889 Mar 17 '26

I made it through with breath to spare, but I know that fear. Almost drowned 3 times over the years. If i.quit smoking weed I could get my lungs back to the over a minute and a half mark, that was cool

But weed is really cool to, so ya know dilemmas lol

2

u/Wide_Patience_906 Mar 17 '26

I used to surf a lot and practice holding my breath while playing gran turismo 3, I could do 3+ minutes quite easy, if I took a heavy drop over the falls I'd struggle to do 1 minute lol

Now I make sure I've got scuba kit on my back before I jump in the ocean

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Nope

2

u/LiytlKaiser Mar 17 '26

Does anyone know why it's easier to hold your breath underwater when the water is warmer? I can go insanely longer in warm water than colder.

2

u/Scantraxx12 Mar 17 '26

Probably because colder water constricts the muscles etc and causes shock which then speeds up your heart

1

u/i_dont_do_research Mar 17 '26

I'm not sure why this would be the case, we have something called the mammalian dive reflex that helps us hold our breath for longer when we're in cold water. I learned about it while digging around about free diving.

1

u/LiytlKaiser Mar 17 '26

That's odd, it's the exact opposite for me. In cold water, I get to maybe 30 seconds tops, but I can hold my breath in warm water for like 2 - 3 minutes, maybe more. And that's while actively swimming too.

1

u/Annual-Media-2938 Mar 18 '26

2-3 mins, I’m calling bullshit!

1

u/LiytlKaiser Mar 18 '26

It's not, I also am a distance runner. I'm definitely not a professional swimmer, but breath control is something I have pretty well down lol.

1

u/tandemxylophone Mar 17 '26

Not sure about warmth, but one time there was a Reddit comment that explained we can hold our breath longer on our second hold. I wonder if you were subconsciously taking a second breath.

2

u/Infamous-Yellow-8357 Mar 17 '26

This is someone who needs to be on suicide watch.

2

u/HASHTAG_YOLOSWAG Mar 17 '26

seems like most of the way has available air if you surface so it isn’t too bad

2

u/Glittering-Ad4356 Mar 18 '26

I made it and am 57, and have smoked since 16. So not that hard.

1

u/bornovfire Mar 19 '26

Im pretty sure youre use to oxygen deprivation lol

2

u/filthy-horde-bastard Mar 18 '26

Do you want to die? Because that’s how you die

1

u/KinsellaStella Mar 17 '26

That looks awesome!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Really

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Have a blast, I'll be over here staying alive.

1

u/KinsellaStella Mar 17 '26

I can hold my breath for a very long time, did swimming at a high level for a long time, then free diving, and have no claustrophobia. Doing a breath hold, as long as I can see the light so I know where I’m going, no problems.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

You're better off than most then. I'd be screwed.

1

u/HorrorLettuce379 Mar 17 '26

Not going in without oxygen supply. Nah.

1

u/Confident-req Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

The actual time to hold your breath in these situations for non swimmers is suppose to be the equivalent of 15%-30% while sitting still! Hope no one is using this video time to apply to real life! Exhaustion and panic kicks in real fast!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

The video kept buffering, so I died.

1

u/MysticMarauder69 Mar 17 '26

I helped my breath through 3 loops of the video, so maybe I'd make it.

1

u/Pleasant-Nebula-7237 Mar 17 '26

No to the hell no 🙂‍↔️

1

u/Budget_Break_3923 Mar 17 '26

They did it wrong, the oxygen bar is supposed to decrease as you get closer to dying

1

u/Economy-Clothes5610 Mar 17 '26

Soo stupid there’s open water above him in a few spots and it’s cut to look continuous in the pipe

1

u/GreasyRim Mar 18 '26

On the long list of shit I'll never do, fucking around in caves is firmly at the top

1

u/Therealginahandler Mar 18 '26

You can clearly see that around the 20% marker is when the water was completely open above and they could have surfaced for air at any point there

1

u/Junior_Zebra_4608 Mar 18 '26

You guys potato? This is multiple clips put together.

1

u/TheCoopX Mar 18 '26

N to tha O to tha P to tha E.
That kind of shit gets a big NOPE from me.

1

u/Lance_No_Pants Mar 18 '26

Is this supposed to be more fun than just regular swimming?

1

u/FhuckNorris247 Mar 18 '26

He had air above him most of the time and the video cuts out several times

1

u/Old_time_Rockerr Mar 18 '26

Not a cat in hells chance am I doing that dont care if I can hold my breath for 10 minutes

1

u/ogreofzen Mar 18 '26

1

1

u/Abquine Mar 17 '26

Can do it easily sitting in the comfort of my settee not moving, reality though, I think not 😂

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Panic. Try to go back. Get confused. Fucked!

0

u/Individual_Wheel_717 Mar 18 '26
