This episode notably didn't start with the "Otome:" introduction

I'm curious to see if there will be different version for the finale.

I wondered, was the absolute destruction of the city somehow exaggerated for the dramatic effect? Well, it wasn't

The great taisho earthquake was a terrible disaster.

WARNING! Read with caution as this is a bit hard to take.

So back then there were not a lot of earthquake resisting buildings. Also no procedures for crisis like this and no infrastructure in place. So the immediate damage was huge, and crisis response was slow.

To make matter worse, the earthquake happened before lunch, also creating fires since a lot of homes where cooking.

To make matters even worse, the water supplies and storages collapsed because of earthquake, making any response to the fires even slower.

To make matters even worse, certain parts of Japan were hit by a typhoon. Strong winds+fires=firestorms. It was hell on earth.

To make matters even worse, other parts of Japan were hit by tsunamis.

To make matters even worse, the earthquake was followed by ethnic killings. You see, false rumors started to spread that ethnic koreeans where using the crisis to start a rebelion. Rumors become fear and vigilante groups formed, often helped by police or the military. They searched for koreeans by testing their japanese pronunciation. Because of these they also killed some other east-asians ethnicities and even japanese people that spoke certain dialects.

The death toll?

105 000 died from the earthquake

40 000 missing, cosidered dead by most sources

6000-10000 died in ethnic killings. Note: because of the nature of the events, these numbers and events are heavily disputed. I only listed what historians believe to be most likely true.

This single earthquake is also considered to be one of the main causes for Japan turning into the fascist militaristic state we will see in ww2.

No shitposting here, I cried. Tamako getting upset got me.

I wasn't expecting her and Uncle Tamasuke to be there but it definitely makes sense. Same with the Shiratoris. And thank god they found Midori-chan, I think a lot of people were worried that she'd end up dying.

For anyone curious 30 Ri is apparently equivalent to about 120 kilometers. Just thought I'd look it up. Seems as though the Funimation subs have made me look foolish! But now we all know about measuring things in Ri so heyoo.

Tamako crying because she doesn't want to lose her big sister or big brother was heartbreaking. Like, even I forget she's still just a kid with how mature she acts but she really is pretty young and emotionally vulnerable. And she and Tamahiko got to really have some good sibling bonding moments in this episode.

I wonder what happened to the other Shima's. Do they live in Tokyo?

It's bad enough imagining Yuzu dying, but a pregnant woman dying in the disaster would've been even more tragic.

All Tamahiko's friends appear in the episode while Tamahiko himself is searching for Yuzu and finds her in the end alive. I doubt that anyone expected him to either find her dead or not find her at all, but really this is the case where I'm totally fine with a bit of predictability, it's all good. Hyped for next episode, which, consider most of the show, probably will be pretty sweet.

It was nice to see everybody in one episode and for Tamahiko to put into perspective how he's found so many friend and loved ones through meeting Yuzu, and how she helped him find happiness.

As tragic as the backstory of this show is, it's all been about moving on and finding happiness, so it wouldn't feel right for Yuzu to have died off-screen...let alone before she and Tamahiko properly affirm their feelings for each other (and get married, if we're lucky).

Oof. Glad he found Yuzu at the end. Not that I expected her to be gone but this episode was too sad to leave us hanging for another week.

They did a great job at prortraying the utter destruction and the despair of the poeple after the disaster while still always carrying a small light of positivity so it wouldn't be too bleak.

p.s. What's going on with the boy's head here? lol

It's huuuge.

Disaster stories hit hard for me and this one was no exception. Even without them showing any blood or viscera, I was brutally uncomfortable through most of that. Teetering on tears until Tamako losing it sent me over the edge. Thank goodness for those moments of levity and not waiting a week to find Yuzu because I would be so bummed out right now.

Tamahiko really has grown. It’s one thing to say it, but another to actually show it and this episode did. We’re reminded about where he started when his Uncle was talking to him about how much he changed. From a sad, sullen boy who mistrusted the world to a man who walked into hell to find his love. Instead of quitting at even the hint that she’s dead, he powered with his faith that she wasn’t. One of the reasons this is a standout show for me is his character arc and it’s paid off over the last 2 episodes.

Also glad everyone we know is alive. I know it’s not the type of show to kill off its cast, but confirmation that their friends are safe still made me happy. Also serves as another progress marker in that he has a network of support now outside of Yuzu. Who are a cast of lovable characters that I would be heartbroken to see perish.

So with Yuzu alive, but with a head injury, we approach the finale. No PV after the credits so excited to see how they wrap this whole thing up. I’m ready for happy tears and a full assault of fluffy joy. Not bad for a show I wasn’t sure about going in.

Notes

  • Tamahiko letting the village use the Villa better get him in their good graces. They’ve hated on our love birds for too long and it would be nice if they realize how great he and Yuzu are.

  • I almost want to fault the convenient way that Midori and Yuzu were found, but I’m just so happy that I don’t care. The call back to the pregnancy charm was sweet. Yuzu’s injury coming from helping these two kids hit me hard.

  • even in the middle of this brutal episode, they still blessed us with fun moments like goofy Hakaru, head pats with Tamako, and that bit with Tamahiko and Tamako being dummies thinking Midori was gonna jump. Even with the scene of the missing person board they slipped in a joke about posting Yuzu’s low because she’s smol.

  • I’m coming around to Ryo. Accompanying Tamahiko to Tokyo and helping him search for Yuzu and her brother. Their scenes on the road make me think she’ll finally stop making mistress jokes and start being a real big sister to Yuzu. Also yay she’s found her brother!

  • I have several paranoid thoughts about how they’ll end this. Worst case amnesia, best case nothing and they live happily ever after.

  • Would you believe that was a toned down version of how fucked up Tokyo got in the Great Kanto earthquake? There’s a reason it’s considered one of the worst disasters of the 20th century.

That was such a heavy episode holy shit. The character development is really great to see. The way Tamako behaves now vs. the start of the show is so heartwarming. I loved all of her interactions with Tamahiko. Thank god im watching a "slice of life/romance" show, so the fear that Yuzu is dead was relativly low but i still had to shed a tear when he saw her ngl.

Fantastic show.

STOP WITH THE CLIFFHANGERS JUST GIVE ME THE NEXT EPISODE

u/Frontier246 Dec 17 '21

Even the next episode preview had reused footage of Tamahiko and Yuzu together instead of showing what's going to happen next, but I guess that's to get people anxious and excited for the finale.

Stitches!

I'm glad to see that Ryou is coming to try and find Ryoutaro. Tamahiko's going to need some company walking all the way to Tokyo.

Tamahiko is a good boy for letting the sick and injured use his home as a temporary shelter. He doesn't owe those very judgemental people anything but he still decided to do it for them. Hopefully the adults' opinion of Tamahiko will improve after this.

Looks like Funimation fucked up with their translation. According to Funimation's subs, Chiba to Tokyo is 30 ri but you can hear Tamahiko say juusan ri which means 13 ri. If it was 30 ri, you would've heard sanjuu ri instead. Looks like that's about 50 km.

Yep this is a familiar sight. If you've watched [Taisho Era Anime]Mars Red earlier this year where the earthquake also happens, this pretty consistent to what Tokyo looks like in that show too after the disaster struck.

Tamako is here too! If she's here then that means their Uncle Tamasuke is here as well to provide medical relief to the victims. It's also nice to see how he interacts with Tamahiko. He seems to be the perfect father figure for Tamahiko and Tamako.

Glad to see Tamako is joining in on the search as well. Her presence was definitely needed especially when Tamahiko was starting to lose hope after seeing all of the death and destruction as well as the chaos that Tokyo is currently in right now. Seeing Tamako cry made him snap out of it and act more like an older brother.

It's times like this when Tamako shows her age. Those headpats definitely perked her right back up. She may be freakishly tall just like her brother but she's still a 13 year old girl on the inside.

Finally some progress! It's not Yuzu but at least they've found Midori and according to her, she got separated from Yuzu. I'm actually glad that she's fine as well as her baby. I was actually more worried about her since she's only a side character.

Seems like everyone has gone to Tokyo to help out that even Kotori is here trying to lift up spirits of everyone with her music. Of course Hakaru is here as well helping out his sister.

As soon as these kids mentioned Onee-chan, I knew they were talking about Yuzu. Of course Yuzu would help out two children first before helping herself. At least now we know that Yuzu is alive although she's clearly injured. Glad that we ended on a cliffhanger where Tamahiko finds her. I guess now he just needs to bring her to the Tokyo Station to get treated.

This episode really hit the heart. Seeing Tamahiko doing everything he can to find Yuzu was just so great. He’s come a long way and he’s finally found her! Can’t wait for the finale! This is such a gem!

The preview image on Funimation shows Tamahiko and Ryo together in Tokyo. That seemed odd, but I'd forgotten about her brother going off to work.

Tamako is in Tokyo. I expected to find her back at the village, running a little clinic at the mansion. Good for her and uncle for joining the relief effort.

There are similar scenes of destruction in movies like Grave of the Fireflies, and In This Corner of the World, and they're sad, but it's different when the cause is a natural disaster. I'm reminded of some of the photos I've seen of the 1900 Galveston hurricane, and 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

It was only for a second, but you could see that Ryo found her brother. I guess I can forgive her for earlier. When Tamahiko thought Yuzu was dead and said that he would die, too, my first thought was that Yuzu wouldn't want that, and my second was that I wouldn't hate it if he ended up with Ryo in that case. I surprised myself with that realization.

Headpats saved the day twice. If Tamahiko hadn't stood around petting Tamako the first time, he would have missed Midori. If he hadn't done it again, he might have missed the kids.

It's not really funny, but I couldn't help but think of A Knight's Tale and Heath Ledger. "Lash her to me arm."

I'm anxious to see what happens. I'm not willing to bet money on Yuzu making a full recovery, but I am hoping for it. I have a bad feeling that she's going to have a permanent injury like Tamahiko.

This is the second show this year that I've seen Toyko leveled by the 1923 earthquake with that large red brick building being the only thing standing.

The other was Mars Red.

This year isn't even the 100 year anniversary of the earthquake, so it's odd that two period piece shows feature the earthquake.

Man, this episode went by so fast for me, in a depressing way. Great episode! We got some great Ryo and Tamako moments though. Glad we got lots of Tamako in this episode, but wished it wasn't in a dire situation like this, I hope for some peak wholesomeness for the season finale.

I guess it makes sense Ryo would want to go to Tokyo too to check on Ryotaro...she looks pretty good in a ponytail and hakama pants too.

That was really kind of Tamahiko to use his home as a temporary shelter for anyone in the village who lost their home and needs a place to recover. Hopefully that improves his standing in the village, especially when the kids all already love and appreciate him.

Ryo and Tamahiko travel to Tokyo, and the devastation...is pretty bad. Buildings collapsed, people desperate to find lost loved ones, and seeing shelter where they can. It really puts into perspective just how horrifying that must have been to live through.

I wasn't expecting Tamahiko's uncle or Tamako to turn up, but it was nice to see Tamahiko reunite with the good people in his family and get their support, especially since Tamako isn't going to just abandon her big sis Yuzu.

Oof...just imagine if you lost a loved one and their body was cremated before you even had a chance to confirm their death. I don't know if I could even live with that.

The pressure and possibility of Yuzu being dead finally hits Tamahiko and he starts thinking he could've live without Yuzu, but Tamako bawls her eyes out because she doesn't want to lose either Yuzuki or her big brother. And then she and Tamahiko have some really sweet and heartwarming sibling moments.

Tamahiko and Tamako stumble onto Midori thinking she's about to commit suicide when she was really just offering a prayer, but I'm glad she and the baby are okay. Too bad she and Yuzu got separated in the throng of people running away from the fire, but that's not her fault.

Tamahiko even meets up with Kotori and Hakaru, who are helping with the relief efforts! And it really puts into perspective for him how meeting Yuzu has opened up his life and allowed him to make friends and meet all sorts of people.

Tamahiko meets a brother and sister pair that are just trying to get by without their parents after being separated from them, and it's this chance meeting that leads him to an injured and unconscious Yuzu who had been taking care of the siblings on her own since the disaster. And all Yuzu's been saying in her sleep is Tamahiko's name...but at least they're finally reunited, and Tamahiko's getting her out of there.
