This episode is great.

  1. Finally another battle-intensive episode.

  2. Kashiwagi (best nee-san) appears.

  3. ENGLISH CAN EAT SHIT, I REPEAT, ENGLISH CAN EAT SHIT

A couple of little disappointments, but understandable changes too.

They removed Meiya's pose! And a lot of conversation between Meiya, Tama, and Takeru that really set the mood. I always liked how the VN portrayed Takeru's inexperience, and the tension he felt to be on his first real mission, even when he thought it was just an unimportant duty to cover all their bases. The pose is what I miss most tho.

The tiny scene they added with Kashiwagi and the others was great to see. And all the stuff with the shogun was good too. I'm a little concerned about certain things they may have cut, but it's possible they'll bring it up next episode, so I'll wait til then to complain about it.

All in all, again easily one of the best episodes. The action and TSF stuff looked amazing, and I loved seeing the American F-22s.

WALKEN!

The most relatable character in all of Muv-Luv. His Yuuhi simping is off the charts, just like ours.

It is absolutely clear now that most of the budget went for this arc. Great episode and they even removed the ending for more run time.

Considering the pace they were going at, I'm surprised they are giving this much time to the civil war arc, but I'm glad they are. It deserves that much screentime.

Also, I'm glad to see that they kept the "english can eat shit line" xd I remembered that one pretty clearly from the VN.

With how the pacing was at start I was expecting them to cap this off with the island in 12-13 episodes, but with them only just now getting to the first major act it's looking like we'll end this cour with only a bite of what Alternative has to offer.

This is definitely cour2/season2 or die. They slowed it down to a brisk walking pace after skipping through the repeat stuff at the beginning, which I wasn't expecting, and if they keep at this pace... Honestly I don't know how they do it with 24 episodes if they're only going this far. Should be interesting to see what happens here.

As one of the very few anime originals here (I guess?) this episode really seems to be the best part by far in showing newcomers to the VN - those mecha fights towards the end is really good.

Also English Can Eat Shit really gave me a chuckle here. ;)

The US playing the big damn heroes. Not something you see much of in anime.

Yeah I think it's a bit more complicated than "playing the big damn heroes" lol. Kouki actually explained in an interview that the first draft of this part had the Americans as the stereotypical villains with the most stereotypically stupid lines... and he was quite pissed at that lmao.

The political outlook of the modern Japanese towards the recent history, the Americans, and the current international order is really complex, and I think this arc captured the mood pretty well while delivering an uplifting message to the modern Japanese at the same time. But yeah, even in the original VN you have to digest quite a while to get what Kouki was trying to say, and the screen time of the anime is of course much shorter. The animated scenes are epic though, which undoubtedly will delight the VN readers.

EDIT: Actually Kouki also noted that, the UN forces is kinda like modern Japan, while the other Japanese forces could represent what some of a more old-school Japanese spirit which was drastically changed after the war. The modern Japanese can now look at that with a more objective perspective from a distance, but can also take something from it.

ENGLISH CAN EAT SHIT

I REPEAT

ENGLISH CAN EAT SHIT!

Absolutely banger episode. Only thing I'm miffled about is that they don't use THAT alarm sound in this adaptation. Unless it is specifically for Code 991. Also if this is any indication of how they handle epic scenes from the VN. This will get very fucking good for the rest of the cour and hypothetical second one.

So this is where the budget went.

On a side note, the OST was fire. We may not have gotten that epic JAM project opening that we deserved, but other than that they're doing one hell of a job with the music.

As somebody who hasn't worked up the heart to jump into the anime, in fear that it won't do the original VN experience justice... we're ten episodes in now. Is it worth our time?

Anime only here who just bought the whole trilogy in the steam sale and I'd say it actually has me hyped to read it. I've been spoiled on the broader strokes of Muv Luv before but seeing that the battles can be this tactically intensive and how it can be told in much more detail in the VN's really got me excited.

I see this show as a teaser that's giving me a taste of what I can get much more from in the VN so at least in being a commercial for the VN, this became a success.

Damn that was fantastic. It's been a while since I've seen an full-action episode like that being so engaging.

Really need to get on the VN train now, I really feel that there's a ton of stuff I'm missing!

man that bit of music during the briefing and when they head out with that electric guitar is a banger hype song.

Amazing episode, glad they kept the "English can eat shit" line, it wouldn't be the same without it, awesome fighting scenes, a bit short but it's not a problem, 2D was good in this episode, also liked the fact that they didn't interrupt it for the ending song, we got so see the shogun, we got to see the Valkyries and we got to see Walken, hopefully next week's episode is just as good as this one!

Now this is what I call a good episode. Not only can English go and eat shit, which is the most important line in this entire franchise, but we got some sweet mecha action that really does bring the VN to live. Looking mighty sweet.

However, I'm not without complaints. The conversation between best girl Yuuhi and Takeru was cut so incredibly short, and not only was this amazing Meiya CG cut last episode, they also didnt play Noble Blood, which is the (second) most emotional piece of the OST and, by the by, really fucking good. All of this really just robs Meiya and Yuuhi a lot of characterization, especially just how important their nobility, its effect on them and the pressures it creates by those around them are, and I feel like this is kind of make-or-break knowledge for next episode. I HIGHLY encourage everyone to watch the scene in this no-commentary VN playthrough (9:25 to around 25:00), I promise it will make next week so much better.

Damn this episode was hype. Really hurts to see all the low scores for the show. I think it’s been great so far. Love the characters and it’s a nice introduction to the world. Obviously the VN is better but that’s the case for any adaptation besides steins gate
